Now I really want to go to a Phillies game! I hope you ladies enjoyed Rocky V. Critically and financially it’s the lowest performing of the franchise. Yet, I always had a soft spot for this movie. The flashback with Mickey always gets me emotional. He loved Rocky like a son, and Rocky loved him like a father. I wish I had someone like Mickey to give me “motivization.” Burgess Meredith is such a great actor, and he was phenomenal in this role. Seven years after Rocky V, Meredith passed away at the age of 89 on September 9, 1997. I also love the interactions between Rocky and his son, especially at the beginning and end. The boy who plays Robert “Rocky” Balboa Jr. is actually Sylvester Stallone’s real-life son, Sage. He tragically died of coronary artery disease on July 13, 2012. Sage Stallone was only 32 years old when we died. George Washington Duke is actually modeled after the real-life boxing promoter Don King. During his career, King was involved in promoting some of the most famous names in boxing, such Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Roberto Duran. King was also a highly controversial figure who was sued by several former fighters for allegedly defrauding them. Tommy “The Machine” Gun was played by real-life boxer Tommy Morrison. Much like the character he portrayed, Morrison was known for his punching power and iconic left hook. He had a successful career with 48 victories (42 by knockout), 3 losses, and one draw. In 1993, he defeated George Foreman for the WBO Heavyweight title. Unfortunately he retired from boxing in 1996 after testing positive for HIV. He attempted a brief comeback in the late 2000s and even dabbled in Mixed Martial Arts. Tragically he died on September 1, 2013 due to cardiac arrest from multi organ failure due to septic shock. He was only 44 years old at the time. Sylvester Stallone was extremely unhappy with how Rocky V turned out, so he made Rocky Balboa in 2006. That film was much better received as it was critically and financially more successful. It really felt like a fitting and heartfelt send-off for a legendary character. As always, I love your reactions, and I can’t wait for you ladies to do Rocky Balboa (2006). I’m sending my very best wishes out to you both!!!

Interesting fact: The fight between Rocky and Tommy Gunn was choreographed by former pro-wrestler Terry Funk. Terry Funk was a famous wrestler who competed in organizations like the NWA, the WWF, WCW, and eventually ECW. Known as one of the originators of hardcore wrestling, Funk along with his older brother Dory Funk Jr., are the only brother combination to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship; and were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009. Funk had worked with Stallone for a film he directed in 1978 called Paradise Alley; and appeared again with Stallone in Over The Top (1987); and also appeared in Roadhouse (1989) with Patrick Swayze.
@ConstantineFurman10 ай бұрын
The problem is, we don't know which fight Funk was responsible for choreographing. There are two different fights: the one in the director's cut and the reshot one here in the theatrical version and they're both wildly different (with the same outcome, though).

Even if this was considered the weakest sequel, there was levels. It was going to be the last one. In fact, Rocky was suppose to die in the original ending. The street fight left people kinda cold. Many felt Rocky & Tommy should've fought in the ring. But acknowledging the street fight does remind anybody that really knows the streets, if you put your hands on somebody's people, then you know to start throwing hands. At the end of the day, this was about Rocky's family going back to their original roots. Reclaming one's manhood and showing the utmost respect is what matters. Being rich or poor happens to everyone, anywhere. Going from rags to riches is never easy. Stay strong, persevere and keep your heart means everything. Pass on what you've learn to others, by blood or by bond. Everything will fall into place and others will learn to be the best they can be. RIP to those involved with R5:Burgess Meredith (Mickey), Stallone's real life/eldest son-Sage (Rocky Jr.), real-life boxer Tommy Morrison (Tommy Gunn) and Oscar-winning director John G. Avildsen (2 Rocky films 1976-1990).

I remember the rationale for the final fight between Rocky and Tommy was that it was considered inconceivable that, at this point in his life, Rocky would stand a chance against Tommy in a boxing match but that he could stand a chance in a street fight without any rules or restrictions. Later, real life boxer George Foreman showed that an older boxer could hold his own in the ring, and that helped open the door for "Rocky Balboa." I can't wait for you to react to that. "Rocky Balboa" my second (very, very, VERY close second) favorite film in the Rocky franchise.

Rocky 5 may be the weakest entry in all the Rocky films, but its better than what most people say about it. There's still a lot of strong moments in the movie, and a lot of the concepts they introduced in this film weren't that bad honestly. They just weren't executed as well as I think they were going for imo. Plus, it was interesting seeing Stallone's take on Don King, when he used a caricature of him in George Washington Duke in this film. Don King was a boxing promoter in real life that represented such boxers from Muhammad Ali, George Foreman to Mike Tyson. Like the George Washington Duke character, he too had this very bombastic louder than life personality, and he was mainly all about the showmanship of boxing regardless of who got hurt along the way.

I love this film, it's a bit deeper than most think & because it's a darker tone it's jarring after the 80's cheese we got with 4. There's a Workprint version that dives deeper too & hope we get an official release one day. George Washington Duke is based off of Don King, the flamboyant promoter for Mike Tyson. The kid playing Robert (Rocky Jr) is Sage Stallone, Sylvester's real lofe life son. His other son was the baby in Rocky 2. Rocky has brain damage in the film so his actions are a result of that, so it's part of the story to have Rocky go from attentive to ignoring him. Tommy's backstory is actually deep unfortunately we don't get deeper into it. This is the first film to have a real Professional Boxer play a main role. The next film does it too. Something else to know is Sylvester was not close to his sons, something he regrets. One is mentally challenged (that he never talks about) and this one passed away. This film was Sylvester trying to get close to him and they would be in another film together a few years later. So the writing is very true to Sylvesters life in a way. It's kind of a sad truth and Stallone has since said he doesn't care for this film due to the bad memories.

When it comes down to ranking all Rocky movies… or actually only ranking from Rocky 1-5 … I’d place… Rocky V, Rocky III & Rocky in first place 🥇 Rocky II in second place 🥈 Rocky IV in third place 🥉 The first time I watched this movie I had high hopes that “Tommy Gunn” was gonna be the next professional boxer, like “Clubber Lang” to either end Rocky’s career with a tie/draw, but mainly leaning more towards a victory!, obviously favoring Tommy. afterwards it would’ve been awesome to show a scene in which respect is mutual between Rocky & Tommy, therefore friends again. Think about it… Tommy would then be in Rocky’s shoes boxing, and Rocky would be in his corner at ringside like the (next) guardian angel that “Mickey Goldmill” was!😩😢😎

@@RuntotheMovies if you have time definitely watch the scenes. There are surprisingly a lot of good scenes cut from the movies. Rocky Balboa aka Rocky 6 definitely has one to complete an important scene in the movie

There’s an alternate ending. Which I thought was better.

These aren’t Philly girls..when you’re born in Philly you are required to watch rocky 1&2 before you can be released from the hospital

39:03 The movie does show the neighborhood guys trying to stop Tommy, but it also shows that they're no match for him thus setting up the fight as one on one Rocky vs. Tommy. The rationalization is a little thin (or maybe not - look at how often cell phone videos show only one person in a crowd willing to step up and take on a violent @$$hole), but it's what we all wanted.

George Washington Duke is based off of Don King, a promoter who even looks similar to Duke. Screwed over lots of well known boxers including Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson.

I can't wait for you two to watch Rocky Balboa.

Love you ladies and your reactions including this movie. however I dont like the rocky movies after rocky 2-3. why? becouse sylvester stallone refused to allow rocky to be beaten or give us a huge plot twist. example: do you really think a 50 year old rocky is going to beat the hell out of a champion 24 year old boxer?? NEVER. I wish they had allowed rocky to end his career with brain damage and created a plot/narrative that he regretted getting into boxing becouse it destroyed his brain and that violence wasnt a good way to live. OR why dint they allow rocky to become a villian in the end? that would have blown audiences away.

Producer's note: please don't spoil future movies for the girls. In this particular case I won't remove your comment because they already recorded their Rocky Balboa reaction, but I hope you'll refrain from spoiling stuff in the future.

May not be as good as the first 4 but still a solid Rocky Movie. I actually enjoyed the street fight because it was something different.
