Interesting point. Pederson wanted to try that play the week before against Minnesota when the Eagles were crushing them in the NFC Championship Game. Foles told him "no" and that they may need it at a later time. You didn't need to run a trick play with a huge lead against Minnesota, so they saved it for the Patriots.

@jameshoran8

The pause by Pederson was because it wasn't on his play sheet that day and Pederson had told referee Gene Steratore prior to the game that he planned on no trick plays being run. Steratore asked him post game why he told him no trick plays. I didn't call the play. Nick did.

If you're throwing it 10 yards or more, make sure it's over the recievers head so the defender has a chance to intercept it. Lets never use use our running back, and when we do use our running back, it'll only be when our throwing isn't working so it's obvious to the defense what we're gonna do. Lets overpay a cover corner but play him as a shutdown who can't really shut down any receivers at all. Lets have an injury crisis 3 years in a row and not do anything to really strengthen our back up core." I could keep going, that's really only the basics 😅

What I love about this play, is that there was maybe a 1 in 1000 chance of Doug calling it in the Superbowl. Yet, each and every player new EXACTLY what to do when they heard the words Phily special. No second guesses, as if they run it all the time. Makes you realize how much practice and preparation goes into it all.
@go3flea
@go3flea Жыл бұрын
This is what Doug didn’t get enough credit for. He may have not made the call but he is the reason it went off silky smooth. Pederson not only kept the play in the book but actually made it a priority to PRACTICE it and other rare plays like Hail Marys over and over. Normally these kinds of plays only see light _maybe_ once a season so teams rarely ever practice them but Pederson made them practice it to perfection.

That play was all about foles selling the idea of the “non engaged qb trying to not get hurt”. When you stand still as a qb, you can’t be engaged with by a defense. So once he saw that defender move to the inside, he took off and that’s why he was wide open

When Nick Foles comes up to Coach Doug Pederson and says "You want Philly Philly?" You can see Doug Pederson was about to call a different play and then stops immediately. He looks at Nick Foles for 3-4 seconds and says "Yeah, let's do it." 4th & Goal, up by 3, 38 seconds left until Halftime and still anyone's game. The last thing you want to do is lose momentum to Tom Brady & the Patriots. That has to be one of the ballsiest calls of All-Time.

The longest two seconds in Doug Pederson's life. His whole coaching career, past, present, and future, flashed before his eyes in that moment. I can't imagine how he had to feel, with his quarterback coming up and putting him on the spot for that sort of a decision, where if they happen to execute, he looks like the greatest genius, and if they happen to fail, he gets second-guessed worse than Bevell calling that pass on the goal line for Seattle. But when Foles caught it, and then when Brady T-rexed his copycat play, it was just so satisfying.

This play was NOT an illegal formation. Alshon clearly points to the line judge to verify he is legal 5 seconds before the snap. Illegal formation is a judgement call and if the line judge clears him its 100% legal. You don't see the line judge approve but the fact that Alshon does not move afterwards tells you all you need to know. You normally get 1-1 1/2 yards off the ball to be considered on the LOS. For reference on how this works check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqHZZJ2nor6FoM0 at the 31:35 mark.

julian t false. Didn’t happen. Goodwill met with a guy with that description, forget his name. Turned over tapes of subject and the NFL assessed no punishment because nothing was there. The news source reporting what you’re claiming, filming a walkthrough, *apologized* for this fallacy. Belichick denied it and the NFL found nothing contradictory. Dick Vermeil *himself* stated publicly that the videotaping would not have changed the games outcome.

Patriots #70 was the only player who recognized the play before the pass was made. #53 was the only player in the assignment who could have broken up the play. Instead he runs into #70 trying to attack the run and is out of position to defend the pass. I think 31 fanbases smiled watching this touchdown. Enjoy this memory forever Eagles fans, this is football history.

Underrated player in this play....the person taking the direct snap, Im guessing a RB, no idea who he is as im a browns fan. But he had to keep his hands down so as to no make it look like he was the true QB in this play. Doing that in the superbowl in shotgun formation on 4th down at the goal line has to be incredibly terrifying. But he put his hands up at just the right moment to catch the snap and make the plan. Just Beautiful

@@XenanKayriRedFrost This was during the Super Bowl back in February of 2018 and this was a trick play that ended up benefiting the Eagles which lead them to win the Super Bowl. On the other hand, the Patriots tried a similar play but failed when Tom Brady couldn't catch the ball when they were on 4th down in the previous possession. The Patriots fans were questioning if the Philly Philly play was legal. The Patriots are notorious for cheating but they complained that there wasn't enough players on the line of scrimmage for the Eagles team when the play was being used during the game. Some analysts say they were lined up and others say they were not lined up. In the end, the Eagles still won the Super Bowl. Lastly, I'll add that Tom Brady never shakes the hands of the winning Quarterback when he loses in the Super Bowl.
