Phil.. you are the Man. I’m leaving for an Easter gig now We are Sight Reading on the gig and following a conductor. How many KZbin videos cover either of these topics.. especially with a choir??? Groove is NOT always a constant tempo is correct.. especially with a conductor. The key is to make the choir and music flow together. Making people FEEL the Time both Physically AND Emotionally is what musicians and the audience wants. Ps. I own & used all your books. Un Abrazo. 😊🥁

Phil, so glad you’re talking about movement on drums, especially the “dance” aspect. My first drum lesson at my short stint at Berklee was with the great Joe Hunt. It was a chart reading course and he stopped me about 2-minutes in. He said “your reading’s ok but you’re stiff. You need to dance on those drums man!” Great lesson for a young kid like me and Bruce Becker teaches that approach as well. Thanks, man!

@@philmaturanodrums Absolutely, especially since movement is the most fundamental skill for what we do

@@frankgardner7533 So much of the internship side of studying has been lost. Being under someones wing is not popular in the west. Its a true pity. And thats how we are in the state of things we are in.

@@philmaturanodrums That’s another reason why I appreciate what you’re doing. There’s no “fast food” delivery system to become really good at this art.

Bouncing drummer is one of my pet hates to see . The error I see a lot in drummers is bass drum not lining up with their hands . It's often the player isn't fit enough to play what they are trying to do . Playing a show uses a lot more energy than playing in a bedroom super fit in a house isnt the same as a stage . Stage has way more distraction than a practice room so things can fall to bits. I've been working through what I now call drum set scales , it's all based on limb combinations that I'm not used to and moving around the grid . It's just to remove the problems of drifting into phrases I can't pull off . Car crash moments i drove into. Counting off a tune is something nobody covers. lots can go wrong Counting off a band for someone that doesn't know . I'll often tap my leg before a Count off so the band get more of the time that's going to come along. Odd stuff like looking at band members feet and their body moves that cue you to changes or even if the tempo needs to change. A lot of visual points and hints but you have to be looking.
