I bought a Birkin as a tubestock plant about four years ago and it's beautiful. I don't know why people complain that they've lost the variegations. That's the nature of the cultivar. My new leaves are white and the green comes in with stripes to solid green as the leaves age. It's meant to do that. I think your baby needs a bigger pot too. I can hear it screaming "love me more". It's a living thing. Nothing responds without caring vibes.

I've had mine about 3 years. I must admit, I'm definitely a fan. It's just so ridiculously low maintenance for me, so the fact that I can accidentally forget about it and it has never given me a single issue, makes it a legend. When I first got it, it was so exciting to see what each new leaf would be like as it seemed like quite unstable and so would put out half Rojo Congo leaves (after one of its parents). I loved its identity crisis. Its leaves became pretty uniform after a year and if the leaves became too pale, I just moved it into slightly lower light. Just a great plant for beginners or neglectful homes

I've had mine for about 2.5 years, got it for 17USD at a grocery store. It's been a super easy plant for me once I changed it to a better drainage soil with pumice. I water about once every 2ish weeks. It survives being under watered quit well as I once forgot to water it for a whole month. The trickiest part for me was finding a spot in my home with the right amount of light for it, like you pointed out. Yes it is a slow growing plant but I do find the size of the leaves gets bigger with more light. Originally I had it in too much light and the leaves burned. Then I moved it to low light and the leaves definitely got smaller and the plant barely grew taller. Now I have it in a spot where it gets about 6 or hours of indirect light and new leaves come out quicker and bigger. It's almost twice as tall since moving it to this spot. I can literally look at the plant's growth pattern and see my journey with it. Still not tired if it, at least not of this particular one.

I agree. Finding the sweet spot was key for me aswell. But once I did, it's been growing like crazy. And the leaves have been getting bigger. I was even able to separated into 2 which was great. I find this to be one of the absolute easiest plants I have. It's really is an underrated beauty !

I bought mine on the clearance rack for $5 including a ceramic pot. It was left out in the sun and all the leaves were scorched. It took a long time to recover, but now it looks healthy again after a year. It hasn't reverted yet. It's everywhere now, but I still think it's really pretty and not difficult, a winner for me.

I got a Birkin 2 years ago & at first it was great but then I started getting solid white leaves & I patiently left them alone thinking they would get the green variegation once they matured, but it just kept making more & more solid white leaves and then they would turn brown & die. When I'd had enough with it reverting and I cut it back to the green variegation and it completely stopped growing for A LONG time(several months) then I noticed a new offshoot growing out of the side of where I made the cut and WALLA! My Birkin grew back better and healthier then ever before and I cut back on the grow lighting I was giving it because I was told they can start making solid white leaves if you give them too much light and since I've cut back on the sunlight the green is more intense but it still tons of variegation on all of the leaves. I hope this helps someone if their Birkin does the same, also these plants are extremely genetically unstable so reversion can happen it's not something you did. So I fell out of love with the plant after I bought it but then I fell back in love with it after I got the reversion to stop🤷 it's a love hate thing I suppose lol I love your videos btw I've learned so much from you thank you so much!❤️

I am wondering if when your plant was getting too much light and the leaves were growing in white, did you notice if the plant was also seeping sap out of the area of the new growth and the older leaves?

I think you just helped me! While I had already figured that she was getting too much light and turning quite light with new growth my mother plant… has two sizable pups in her pot that are dark and striped as they should… is getting too heavy. I pulled her 6-8 feet away from her south window on a shelf along the wall. I’m considering cutting her top off and removing her pups entirely. She is potted in regular soil but has really thrived except for the light faded coloring on top.

Wow - I’m gonna buck the trend here, but I have loved my Birkin- I must have fluked the right conditions - it has been in a window that gets afternoon sun, and I am in Melbourne so we are just coming into Spring, I’ve had it through winter - about 6 months. It has been super easy care and has been a beautiful, very attractive plant for me. That said while my plant looks quite beautiful, the one featured in this video was a pretty sad looking specimen - leggy and tatty looking - like a completely different plant. I have already propagated from mine as I found an offshoot growing from my original, and my propagated plant is also thriving. Quite mystified that others haven’t enjoyed them.

I've had mine for about 6 months now. purchased from a nursery. my husband and son have purchased their own from big box and even the grocery stores since with various levels of variegation and reverting showing. they like the reverting showing. the oldest one that I bought from the nursery is still stable, producing fairly large, evenly colored leaves. nothing too crazy on the length of leaves or anything. she looks perfect to me. maybe I just got luck with this one plant. she does shoot off pups like crazy though!! all the birkin pups 🤦🏻‍♀️ so many birkins lol

I bought my birkin at a big box store about 8 months ago in California for $18, I fell in love with a big beautiful mutated leaf.🥰 I first had it in low light & it didn’t change or grow, I moved it to a brighter room about 2 1/2 feet from a grow bulb & it started taking off, It’s very bushy now & is always working on 2 to 4 leaves & throws out an occasional mutated leave which is fun. I water when almost dry & micro fertilize with every watering, also I’ve been misting the new unfurling leaves this summer so they don’t get stuck, but it’s in a warm room with low humidity & seems to be fine with it.🌿

Aloha Memo, I had 3 funky, top heavy Birkins. Planted the three Missies around a single moss pole in a 2 gal pot, with chunky ariod mix. 1) the funky look instantly changed, I now have one full bushy pot instead of three wonky top heavy pots. 2) was worried the short internodes were not ideal for a moss pole candidate, but the ariel roots attacked the moss pole, and wala, no more funky, wonky look. 3) does it grow any faster??? Nope, but she’s a beautiful Bushy Birkin now……….

I'm in the US and see birkins often at Lowe's or home Depot or grocery stores even for cheap prices. I bought 1 at the beginning of my plant hobby and killed it in a few months, bought a 2nd one maybe a year and a half ago. That one has done great and actually it throws out leaves pretty quickly. I have it in just the soil it came with and yeah I love her. One point it had like 3 solid white leaves that started rotting at once I cut them off and it was fine again. I would definitely recommend for the price it's at now. Such unique variegation.

Hi Memo, I've had a Birkin on my wish list for a while. You know how it is... "so many plants, so little time"... Cue in the disco music 🎶. It's a good thing I don't understand the concept of plants being "fashionable". I just wanted to thank you for your informative content and gentle demeanor. I love the idea of an info repository! I'm in the USA in Tennessee and the Birkin is an easy plant to find now. I have one that's so beautiful that I purchased about 6 mo. ago. I think it's doubled in size since I purchased it, cheaply. It's full and bushy. I saw a video or it could have been an article that said the Birkin is an accident. The first grower noticed those leaves were very different on the top of his Philodendron Rojo Congo, but he knew that it wasn't the same plant and couldn't figure it out but he loved the variegation so he took those leaves and propagated them and started selling a few. They went like hot cakes so he grew more then other growers started it also. Now, since that story was given, I have found another site that said the Rojo was created to develop a totally different plant with various growth tendencies. So, according to that site, it was on purpose. Who knows what is true? The Birkin is still one of my favorite plants. I adore it. Yes, it's only 6mo. old for me but I still love it. I give it a grow light, humidity, water when dry, worm casting tea, ventilation. I look at it all day cuz it's right in front of me and I can't look at it long enough cuz it's so beautiful. I put all my favs in front of me to view all day because I love looking at them. I wish you loved them like I do...but I know we all have different likes.

Got one for around 3 Euro last year in a local Garden Center, its really a low price plant here in Germany. There were 2 or 3 planties in the pot, directly put it in Pon with self Watering and so far it loves it. Its already bigger then yours, but is growing under growlights. Mine is growing straight up, I was surprised it has this kinda climbing growth, because on all the pictures on the web it does not look like a climber at all. Can agree with the light requirements, switched it to another place with a stronger grow light but more space between the plant and the light and it directly started to get some browning on the leaves. So I put it back to its old position.

I still adore my birkin! I've had it for about 6 months - it was preowned for about 2 years before me. She's quite large and bushy, 5 stalks in 1 plant and I paid $30CND. They are pretty easy to find where I live in Canada but I have never seen one as large as mine. Thanks for the reminder on watering... with winter approaching, I likely need to dial it back after our hot summer. Mine is coming in with beautiful variegation on all growth points, some leaves smaller then others but still such a gorgeous plant. Currently getting about a leaf every 4-6 weeks on all growth points but assuming that will slow down into the winter. Loving this where are they now series!!

I have had my Birkin 2 years and she’s a fast grower for me. She sits right in my south facing window in Miracle Gro and perlite. She gives 2 -3 leaves per week. She dries out quickly so I water her fairly often. I run my humidifier 4 hrs per day. I moved not long ago and she did very well. Not one dropped leaf. All leaves come in variegated, some lightly some heavily but none very light. She’s one of my favorites. I’m in the U.S. and you can find them anywhere still.

I really love this plant IN MY OFFICE. I have it in my aroid mix in a 6 in self-watering pot, in an east facing window, and it does really quite well being neglected. I love that it adds some variegation and interest to my office plants, and it's not one I have to worry about other people messing with when I'm not in the office. I would not keep it in my home collection though.

It’s a very easy to find plant here in Holland that sell for very little money. I bought mine a few months ago for about €5 I think and it has 3 little plants in the same pot. Also not sure if it’s already mentioned, but from what I have read and heard the Birkin either originates from a mutation of the Rojo Congo and was then cultivated or a hybrid from Rojo Congo and Imperial Green. Either way it definitely has dark leafed parentage in its genes. Mine started to revert recently and got big patches of dark brown on the new leaves. It now seems to have changed its mind as the newest leave has a lot more Birkin pattern on it again. Also funny that it’s a slow grower in your ideal conditions as all 3 of mine constantly keep pushing out new leaves in normal living room conditions. In size it doesn’t grow fast indeed as the leaves are literally piled on top of each other, but in terms of leaf production it’s very fast for me. Hope that helps 😊

Hello and thank you for this. I bought mine a couple of yrs ago for about 20.00...small and all green. Now it is very striated with white in newer leaves. Loves the brightest light in west window...no rot for me...took a small cutting several months ago and it is doing well in all aroid soil. I fertilize it lightly every couple of months. Expect it will slow down this winter in northern hemisphere. Recommend this if you want stable variegation and a good-looking plant.

We live in Santa Cruz, California and ours is from HomeDepot. My sons and I got this plant for my husband on fathers day 2023. Was not upset that the white lines started to fade out, it still is a beautiful plant with dark green leaves. Our apartment does not get any direct light, it's always dark so we have to pull back the blinds all the way so his plant and my growing collection of plants get some exposure to indirect light all day. His plant is growing slowly which isn't a problem for him since he wants a smallish to medium size desk plant. It may be time to repot it since we see roots coming out from the bottom holes. Thanks for this video btw 🙂

I received a tiny rooted 2 leaf cutting of this plant as a freebie around 2 years ago. I didn't know anything about it at the time and just let it do its thing. I honestly wasn't too interested in it but I was at the beginning of my plant journey and was just excited to get another plant for free, lol. Now it's a much bigger plant and is always working on a new leaf it seems! I don't think I would have bought it for myself but because I've watched it grow up over the last couple of years I do have some affection for it. :) I also have seen some massive birkins online and think it would be really cool to have a massive bushy Birkin for my living room or as an accent piece in the hallway. Thanks for the great video as always

I really like it so far, but perhaps because it’s not demanding, it doesn’t get much attention so far. Everyone’s comments are incredibly helpful. I’m grateful to read about the experiences of others with this plant.

I agree with your assessments of this plant. I purchased a fair size plant in a 6 inch pot over 2 years ago. I really did enjoy it initially. I kept it in an eastern window and it grew quite well and quickly. However after about 6 months the leaves were coming in smaller and smaller and the variegation was disappearing, the leaves were small and white. I chopped it back several times hoping to stop its decline. I still have the plant but the love affair is definitely over. If it were to die tomorrow I would have no desire to replace it 🤷‍♀️

.. I got mine in 2018-2019 from a grocery store in Denmark where I live, not knowing what it was.. I feel in love with the white pinstripes on the green leaves and since it was sold as a "green plant", I had no idea.. I had it in my bedroom window (west) and it seemed to enjoy it a lot.. During summer 2020, it was living outside with most other of my plants, on my garden table shaded by a gigant parasol, it just grew bigger and bigger.. All new leaves was and is creamy white with very light green pinstripes.. The older leaves eventually turns greener and somewhat darker.. That summer it was growing out of the pot so a new would be in place.. Only thing was that I found 4 plants in the same pot, and still I had no idea of what plant it was.. So the 2 plants with stribes was in one pot, the 2 with solid darker green leaves only in another pot.. And then I had to do a research.. Big surprise when I figured out that it was 2 different plants, though one of the same.. One came out from the other.. Explaining.. The Birkin is a hybrid of the Red Congo, period.. Nothing more nothing less.. Information found at a gardener, and a book about philodendrons, and on Google about philodendrons.. So the Birkin does not turn into a Red Congo but a Red Congo can turn up from the Birkin.. Only because the Birkin is manmade of the Red Congo.. I still have my Birkin and she's grown big and bigger, though no arial roots like yours but loves the bright direct light in the window.. I gave the Red Congo away..

We have them everywhere in Massachusetts. $10-$20. I think mine was $12 for a good size in June. I've had 3 or 4 new leaves. I had to move it to a few feet away from a south facing window to get the bright white stripes back. It did well in my north facing window but the white stripes were extremely thin. New leaves come out very bright but darken as they age I believe that's normal. No browning, no dead leaves. I'm battling thrips in my house but haven't seen any evidence of them being on this. Mine is named Priscilla. 🌱

So I bought mine at a garden centre in London for approx £10 (I had purchased quite a few things that day so guestimating) it looked beautiful and i was hooked. But now I'm reluctantly admitting that I'm falling out of love with it and it's only been a couple of months!🥺 So far I've had to chop off around three yellowy-white leaves because it made the whole plant look manky. It seems to have around three new yellowy/white looking leaves that have yet to unfurl - they don't look very big though which adds to my disappointment. I can't explain my disappointment 😔 may be i feel let down, and because you have so eloquently verbalised my feelings, ill say no more😕

I got a Birkin at my local garden center for $2. last month. They were clearing out all of the houseplants that they didn't sell during the summer. It's only about 1' tall and was in a small pot, so when I got it home, I repotted it and gave it well-draining soil. Put it in my living room where it gets plenty of indirect light all afternoon. It's doing very well and is already showing new growth. I have a lot of philodendron in my home, since I find that they're very beautiful and easy to take care of. I like the little plant, but wouldn't have spent a fortune on it...or any other houseplant. There are so many beautiful plants to be had for low prices, so I don't need to get any plant as a 'status symbol'.

I love my birkin. Picked it up like 5 months ago as a rescue at our big box store Lowes. It did have some root rot so I re-potted it and give it plenty of light. I am thinking of moving it to water.

I knew your opinion of it before I got to the end 🤣! However you've done far better than I ... mine is not sitting anywhere that could be deemed bright (it's gone dark with limited varigation now) I was bored of it after 6 months, way to slow growth for my tastes. It's been readily available for at least two years in the USA, and the big plant dealers still push them through the big box stores albeit in fancy white pots! If memory serves me correctly they are a rojo sport, then tissue cultured en masse.

There are various tales online about Birkin's origin, some say 'Birkin philodendron was first discovered in 1881 by British botanist James Hemsley, who named it after his friend Evelyn Birkin.' Other say it's a genetic, spontaneous mutation of a Philodendron Rojo Congo, that came out in the 1980s, whatever it was its origin I like it, I like the fact that new leaves are almost white and slowly get white/green striped, I like stripes! I like the fact is very very easy, no fuss, it can get very big, I have a couple since 2021 and they are quite big now, also I love they popped new baby birkins at the sides, and little red plantlets of Rojo Congo too (I separated a Rojo Congo from the original plant, which grows faster than its mother Birkin and it's bigger than her ahaha) so I don't care now they're not 'trendy' anymore, I still like my Birkins :)

One of my first plants was a Birkin, it kept pushing out leaves so fast, each one bigger and bigger, and he responded and adapted so well to my chaotic watering and feeding schedule that he became my favourite. So I got another one... The new one is sensitive af, with tiny leaves in comparison. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes , very easy to get in USA and even ordering from places like etsy . Very easy to propigate , I cut mine down and mother plant grew new leaves and the other part I put in a glass jar and roots in a month . Its one of my least favorite plants because of growth paterns .

Had a Birkin in early 2022. It was my favorite - they are gorgeous - but I was not successful with keeping her alive. But... When I was tossing my dead plant, there was a baby starting in the soil so I repotted it, thinking I would start a Birkin again. Nope - turned out to be a Rojo Congo (makes sense since Birkin is a hybrid of Rojo Congo & green imperial). Just got a new Birkin today, to try again. Much cheaper now - CAN$8 for 4". Now let's see if I can keep her alive this time. Lol.

I adore your videos and Memo I have learned so much from your plant reviews. I, for one, have learned that I have excellent taste in plants because we seem to have quite similar taste! 😂 My Birkin is two years old and she has gotten quite light on top exactly like yours. Almost a reverse Birkin in coloring white leaves with green strips. I’m quite curious though if I just let her be what will eventually happen as she continues to mature. I still love my Birkin was my favorite and is still one of despite her current flaws. I find her interesting and I’m curious about her. That keeps her one of my top plants I gravitate towards first when I check my plants.

Hi. 🙋 Just came across this video while doing some research on a mysterious house plant i bought in a supermarket for a few bucks last fall. It was marketed as a "philodendron white veins", which is not actually a thing, i have come to realize. Turns out it's a sneaky birkin. 😁 It just put out a beautiful reverted leaf that's a third bordeaux, the rest of it bright white, and with a gorgeous transition between the two. The transition looks like the way a Tineke rubber plant has blotches of different shades of green. Now i'm hoping the next few leaves will have the same coloration, and if they do, i will try to separate and propagate the top bit. 😊

I got mine in May 2019 in a trade for an Anthurium regale. I was told it was a tissue culture mutation from congo 'Rojo' so I treated it the same. After a bit I tried to put it on a pole and that didn't work out well and was loosing variegation, I had to cut it back and reroot it. In the light I have it in I get nicely striped new leaves that turn green over the course of about 8 months. I have not gotten a leaf on the main stem either pure white or pure green. I have had a couple pups come out Birkin and a couple come out green. I still have it and still love it to this day and it's forming a nice rosette with some nice sized leaves. Basically mine looks like a striped congo without any red. If I lost it I would definitely repurchase if it was cheap much like a pothos.

Hi, I purchased mine in Wilko, 6 months ago. It cost me 8£. It was not exactly my dream plant. His 3 newest leaves were all white. And, of course, they became brown very quickly. I had to chop them. A new leaf appeared and was still very white. I put my plant outside in a sheltered position during the summer. My other indoors plants love it. But not this one. Its new leaf became brown and it started growing another weird looking one . I had to bring it back inside the house. Then, it started to improve. It has grown a few more leaves, all lovely variegated . This little guy is now in my bathroom, not far from the window and is a lovely looking plant.

I'm in the US and found one easily and inexpensively. It is a slow grower but given limited space, I'm ok with that. I grow indoors under lights. I have found that when it produces basal pups they are Rojo Congo, one of the parents not the variegated mother plant.

The variation was the mutation of another philodendron, It was cut off and propagated and actually took root. Than It went from there, and they kept propagating it. Also if you give the Birkin less light it will start to revert back to its dark green foliage.

I could have gotten one for around 7 euros a couple weeks agoin my local nursery. There was a lot of aeroids in sale, just regular well grown plants in very good conditions too. Indoor plands tend to be quite a lot cheper where I live in general, but I regret only giving myself permission to bring home one prince of orange. I might go back but I'm pretty sure the sale ended already. Which might be for my benefit tbh, my studio apartment can hardly support any more palnts at this point. Oh well, I'm going to lose like half of them in the winter anyway😂 not to jinks it though. I'm literally praying they survive the heat in the first place.

Not too much of an impressive plant for me. It’s been easy going to care for and it’s pretty next to green foliage or decorating so it has that. A good plant for beginners too! I live in Denver, USA and there is almost no humidity and it does just fine. I wouldn’t buy it again either haha. I fell out of love like the first couple of weeks after getting it. Just found your channel and like you view. But I have to disagree! My Burkin is 1.5 yrs old and 3x as big as yours without all those aerial roots you show. Just paid I think $10-15 for very small starter with 2 mini stalks. No real pests and still love her. Repotted only once but see constant growth (1-2 leaves at a time) with great variegation in broad leaves even with only 2-3 times a yr water fertilizing. One of only 2 philodendrons I can vibe well with.
