Bought a rooted cutting with two leaves for $60 usd a few months ago. There’s very little info on this plant out there so I really appreciate your videos! What I fell in love with thru social media was the metallic red underside. The original leaves it came with made me nervous bc they were washed out and the undersides were not very red. Growing it now for a few months, i can say that mine definitely has very red stems and metallic burgundy leaf-backs. And it’s pushed out 3 new leaves in the last month and 1-2 more on the way that i can see (but i accidentally overwatered and had to do an emergency repot bc i realized my medium was retaining too much moisture so idk if the new growths will keep growing😭). Another KZbinr named Suzette’s Garden (i think) actually told me to give it the BRIGHTEST INDIRECT light that I could manage bc it would encourage darker leaves and more rich burgundy stems/undersides. Seems she’s been right for me so far bc my new leaves are looking beautiful 😊

This is an interesting one, I got my cutting about 7 months ago. Mine has much darker leaves than yours, more pointed lobes, and REALLY rich deep red stems, so I doubt the instagram images are filtered? I'm in Australia so maybe a different strain? Who knows! But yes definitely on slow propagation - gorgeous bright red roots, so cute, and no worries propagating but it was slow to get going. And a bit slow to grow, though its still giving me stunning rich bright red stems, petioles, sheaths and dark red / dark green leaves. The price is a bit weird too. It's not common here, and I paid a bit for my cutting as I couldn't find them anywhere, but then suddenly they started popping up a bit. I now see juveniles weirdly cheap here and there, even though there still aren't that many around. I can only assume its because people don't like it lol! Can't imagine why, maybe they just don't know what it is here, or maybe just because its not variegated hahaha!! It may have its day :)

Awww amazing thanks for sharing your experience, yeah I am a bit stumped too, not sure what is causing it to not be snapped up super fast, but yeah I think either people don't like it or they are not aware of it 😅

I'd like to ask you a couple of questions also if it's alright. First, how big was the cutting when you got it, and how big is it now? Also how many leaves did it have when you first got it, and now? How big are the leaves? Any change? And lastly, how often to you fertilize/feed it, what do you use and what kind of light do you keep it in? I'm extremely interested in growing this plant and keeping the rich bright red stems, petioles, sheaths and dark red / dark green leaves. I will receive mine in just a few days, and it is a dream plant of mine. So I'd love to get a head-start by finding out what you've done successfully. Thanks.

From Australia too and alot of rare plants do occasionally go for ugly discounts because it's either last plant, a mother plant they're finished with or has shipping/shop damage. If you're not worried about stuff like that you can pick up MANY rare plants for under $30. My darklord was last one left on Uprooted and was a $12 ugly discount - and it's just beautiful! (I have gotten many rare plants this way or they've been rehabilitation rescues people just didn't want anymore. I don't think I've ever spent more than $35 on a plant and I've amassed a pretty lovely collection.)

If you use a moss pole for this plant, the moss pole will act as an extension of your growing medium. Water and fertilize the moss pole as you water your plant and it will grow into the moss pole providing support and more growing medium without needing a larger pot because the roots are growing into the pole.

I love this plant I almost lost my juvenile to root rot , I noticed it wasn’t doing anything and the rot was all the way up the stem . She’s finally growing strong , can’t wait till she’s big . I paid about 125$ US for a baby . Tfs

I do have a couple of questions. First, why haven't you just cut it into three different plants? You could even put all three cuttings into the same pot to make it a thicker plant. Second, I'd like to know how often to you fertilize or feed it? Lastly, do you cut the older leaves off if they go a bit yellow? I just cut off the brown or yellow parts, and leave the rest of the leaf. I have one that got a bacterial infection from the person who sold it to me, and I cut all those leafs off immediately upon receiving it, as there was no known cure for this bacterial infection other than mechanical removal. So now I have cut it into three different plants below the biggest nodes, and I'm wondering if you EVER found anything to speed up the growth of these Dark Lords??? It was a wishlist plant for me as well. And even though I've ONLY been taking care of indoor RARE plants for a very short time, I've somehow managed to obtain eight of my top 15 wishlist plants. Granted Most of them are very tiny, as I can't afford the big wishlist plants. I'll just have to grow them bigger. Thanks.

I recently obtained one for $12 AUD because the seller only had one left and was selling it at what they call an 'Ugly Discount' which is typically given to plants they want to clear out, have damage ect...(I recommend this for anyone wanting dream plants who isn't afraid of a rehab/fixer upper plant as it saves you an absolute fortune!) mine looks beautiful and interestingly enough they do produce pups! Mine came with one growing off it so we've propergated it so we'll let you know how it goes (I've had them over a week? There abouts) but unlike yourself I don't have a conservatory or anything fancy (we live in freezing to muggy heatwave Melbourne so we'll see how well it goes.) but I do use a Native potting mix now instead of Aroid/indoor plant mix as it drains much better than any mix I've come across and already it's giving me a new leaf on the mother plant (we're entering spring so) it's looking promising. My fingers are crossed! Hopefully mine looks a glorious as yours one day!

Wow your Darklord looks amazing! Interesting, my dark lord looks different than yours though. Mine is more arrow head like. I've been seeing plant parents posting their darklord and they look different base on leaf shape.

I had a dark lord, unfortunately trying to propagate it killed the main plant and the babies. I hope others had an easier time. But it did well until I cut it. I do have a few reverted pink princess plants that look similar to how it looked, so I am having fun with those.

Interesting, I bought one in December, £85, maybe about a foot tall in height, and it’s growing well now and put out a few leaves the past few months, but…. The leaves are fairly small and unimpressive. It’s next to an east facing window. Hopefully it’ll start pushing out bigger leaves soon enough. Yours is definitely impressive. I love the name dark lord ! Thanks 😊

It depends on the plants that were hybridised to get them. A example is philodendron Rojo which some sell as self heading or as a climber - neither of these are wrong as because of the speices it's crossed with it can do either depending who you got your particular plant from. I have two of them, one climbs the other doesn't. Both were given to me by my mother in law and purchased at same nursery. It could be the same for the Dark Lord.

Definately I have experienced the same from my plants too, they like being close to each other, it helps to create a higher humidity around them, kind of like a micro climate 😊
