01. Find yourself in solitude
02. Remove suffering to be happy
03. Understand your subconscious mind
04. Limit your expectations
05. Be compassionate
06. Avoid boredom
07. Make room for art
I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope these 7 life lessons from Arthur Schopenhauer will add value to your life.
Arthur Schopenhauer is considered to be one of the greatest philosophers of all time. He lived from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century and while he is often described as a genius philosopher, he has also been given less flattering monikers such as The Sad Prince of pessimism and The Messenger of Misery, due to his particularly unique philosophical views . He influenced the work of many great thinkers after him, from philosophers to psychologists to physicists. Arthur Schopenhauer’s work is part of the philosophy of pessimism and Schopenhauer is mostly known for his famous book “The World as Will and Representation”, in which he describes the physical world as the manifestation of an invisible force, a metaphysical will. Schopenhauer's philosophy is based on the idea that the world we perceive is not the real world, we see reality through our own personal filters, which Indian philosophy calls "the veils of Maya" that prevent us from seeing “actual reality”. Schopenhauer is one of the philosophers who pondered the most on subjects such as loneliness, solitude, boredom and what true happiness means.

I remember exactly 40 years ago I was in deep despair, (as a young 23 yrs old lad) yes, my fiancé cuckold me and took off leaving me a few days short of our wedding with a friend of mine (so much for fiancé and so called friend) an elderly acquaintance in the family understanding my pain recommended I read one of Professor Schopenhauer books titled “Love, Women and Death” it was through those pages I found the strength and consolation to go on. It was also a new beginning of searching his philosophy, proudly displayed in my library today, I owe more to this erudite than words can express…Cheers Arthur! this shot of whiskey 🥃 is for you! with my deepest respect and admiration dear Sire.

I spend money on my cats and my road bikes and music, albums, vinyl and Cds and concert Dvds and Blueray. My cats are such a human and physical joy and comfort in life. Anyone that owns dogs will agee with this feeling of companionship that we pet owners have with our cats and dogs. Having not ridden road bikes for a while, I found that I still had my road bike handling skills intact. More importantly, I still relive the sheer joy of riding a road bike. Purchasing music is an investment in pleasure. I look up lyrics and use my knowledge of music structure to find out how a song is written. For me, music is a joy for the senses to be experienced over and over again. My joy with music is so profound that I have started learning piano, guitar and harmonica.

Remember reading “When Nietzche Wept” and there is a line in there that says conquer loneliness to be free. It really made a mark on me and I remember sharing it with a therapist back then and he thought it was BS. I love my solitude now and have grown through it. As long as you are inquisitive and like learning, you never be alone. As Francis Ford Coppola said, learning is one of the few things in life that doesn’t bite back. Meditation now is adding a new level to this. It doesn’t effect me immediately but when practicing daily it sneaks in a sort of calm center to my existence.

I'm currently reading The Gulag Archipelago and Frankl mentioned Schopenhauer so I've arrived here. I actually made this revelation in my own life because I enjoy being in solitude but also flourishing. Once I learned to manage my emotions, life made more sense. Example : Because I'm alone doesn't mean I'm lonely or because I'm alone on valentines day doesn't mean no one likes me, then I go into the spiral of depression because of the connotations that are attached to the word lonely. Awesome video btw.!

I can't get into art lately. It's the only part of this video that I did not relate to. I was once a creative person, but I no longer have the inclination to create anything for its own sake - I've lost too much to want to create and lose more.

@@MM-Iconoclast The creative path can seemingly sometimes be a pointless exercise but I believe ultimately it is still it's own reward and worth pursuing for without creativity we have nothing.

@@Neil-Aspinall In theory that's true, but I have to find outlets that don't feel futile. I just don't feel like creating physical objects. I feel like moving my body (sport, dance) or perhaps singing (it's been a while)... but those things need to be in the right setting, in the right company - doesn't just come easily right now.

I agree with the solitude philosophy. Sometimes I just want to be alone. Not because I'm mad or upset or sad. I just want to be alone. For example, instead of playing an actual basketball game with other people, I can choose to do an individual workout, shooting drills. Or instead of going to the gym to work out, I can choose to run 2 miles alone. Or instead of dining with someone in a restaurant, I can choose to go to Starbucks and read a book, alone. Wanting to be alone from time to time doesn't mean I'm lonely. Solitude is a choice.

The more you enjoy solitude, the more ridiculous it seems watching others torment themselves and each other, fighting over tawdry baubles and trinkets and striving towards ends which they've never thought about, let alone understood.

My friend, I'm an English learner and because I'm blind I've chosen this kinds of podcast to learn English. What I try to mean is that in my language alone, solitude or loneliness only can be translate as soledad. We, Spanish speakers, lose a lot because we don't have this difference. All of us want to be little alone in order to have peace to think, or reading philosophy or I don't know, for the simple fact of being at peace. On the other hand, I think that no body in the entire World, wants to feel lonely. I read "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez, of course I've read it several times in my language before, and I think the translation was excellent, but I disagree with the title. To my humble point of view, the title "cien años de soledad" should have been translated as One hundred years of loneliness. If you've read it, What do you think? I apologize for my awful English and for bothering you. Take care, and have a great life.
