I listened to hillbilly elegy on audiobook years ago. JD is the narrator. I found it on audible when I was searching for advice about my drug addicted sons. I ended up listening to it 3 times. It made me feel not so alone. It explained a lot about the opioid epidemic. Sadly my youngest son died from an overdose about a year later. My older one, thank God, is off of the drugs. It had been a hard road, but that book helped me realize I wasn't alone. And my family, behind from Kentucky, is very similar to JDs. Especially his Mamaw. It helped me understand my family and why they are the way they are.

@user-yk7qj1qu4x, I know your heavenly Father forgave you the first time you said you were sorry. Our earthly fathers are human at best and sometimes they are just not capable at the time to let down their hard stance. I hope you are able to forgive your dad. You certainly are not a colossal or even minimal disappointment to Father God. After all, the Word tells us this in Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; That's why we ALL need our Savior, Lord Jesus. He loves us so much He died for us. I surely hope you know Him. God bless you.

Thank you for this video. Jase, I asked GOD if He would forgive me for what I had done, and He showed me Calvary. And I knew that I had been forgiven. Three years later, I was sitting on the edge of my bed, praying asking GOD for an extra extra extra special forgiveness because I could not forgive myself. And GOD said to me, "Well, if you're waiting for something more, it isn't coming, because it has already been done." And I saw a vision of Jesus on the cross. And so I thought, "Well, if GOD has forgiven me, and I'm not GOD, then I have no reason not to forgive myself. I am already set free. And the weight of my sin that I refused to forgive myself, when GOD had already forgiven me three years prior,, fell off.

My moms Dad was shot and killed by his father in law, I set myself on fire at 3 and suffered 3rd degree scarring on 75%..my Dad became an alcoholic, so did mom eventually. To say we had hard times, I never saw it like that, My mom gave of herself and cared for her 6 children on her own. We knew we were loved and that was all that mattered. I had times that I felt like giving up and doubted God existed. Life is hard even without some of these tragic things happening. He eventually gave up drinking after many attempts to quit. He also preached some, and I have seen a whole congregation in tears after he spoke. He spoke from his heart - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Two of my favorite preachers were discovered in bars by preachers, who went into bars and looked for lost souls. Reminds me of a kairos prison story we share with inmates…. Jacob, an East Texas farmer, raised prize-winning Bantam roosters, and his favorite rooster won blue ribbons at the State Fair. Jacob had one son, Liam, whom he loved very much. On Liam’s 16th birthday, Jacob gave him a used car and the son was overwhelmed with his father’s generosity. Liam wanted to drive it to town to show his friends and Jacob agreed. It was a small country town and Liam gave rides to others. As the sun was setting, Liam said goodbye to his companions and headed down the dirt road for home. He was late and driving way too fast. Soon Liam drove through the family farm’s front gate, hit the brakes hard, and skidded into the front yard, striking his dad’s prize Bantam rooster. The car had rooster blood and feathers all over the front grill. Liam saw his father quietly rocking on the front porch, seeing the whole thing. The Forgiving Father Liam was cut to the heart that he had grieved and disappointed his father. He carefully carried the dead rooster up to where Jacob was sitting. With tears, Liam begged for his father’s forgiveness. Jacob spoke softly, told the boy he was deeply saddened, but he forgave him and smiled. Jacob gently told his son, “Go bury the rooster.” The son got a shovel, buried the rooster under the pin oak tree, and regretted his foolish actions. Four days later, driving home from school, Liam thought more about his recklessness. When he got home, he took the shovel and dug up the rooster. Shaking off dirt and bugs, he carried the rooster to where his dad was working. Liam held up the rotting bird, and in great pain asked his father to forgive him. Jacob with great love and patience said, “Son, I already forgave you. Go bury the rooster.” The “Slow-to-Believe” Son Driving home on Saturday, Liam thought more about his carelessness. Once home, he went to the shed, got the shovel, and headed for the pin oak tree……..By now we are thinking: If that boy digs up the rooster again, he’s really dense. But what a minute. How many times do we “dig up our roosters,” our unintentional and deliberate sins, that the Lord has already pardoned? Some Key Scriptures God says: As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us….Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy…..Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us….My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father-Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.1 The Lesson The rooster story reminds us about total forgiveness in Christ and about what God does for us and what He wants from us. Some of us are still carrying around the guilt of our past sins against our Heavenly Father and others. And still holding grudges for others’ wrongs against us. The good news is: Jesus bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. By Jesus’ wounds we have been healed. For we were like sheep going astray, but now we have returned to Christ, the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls.2 God takes our sins, past, present, and future, and dumps them in the sea and puts up a sign that says “No Fishing Allowed.” (Corrie ten Boom)3 We must not keep digging up our own sins or other people’s sins. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.4 Let us ask for and receive Christ’s forgiveness by trusting in Him and then get on with serving Him gratefully for the rest of our lives. Jesus says: I do not condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin.5 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. For He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust. (Psalm 103:13-14) Let’s bring all our sins to Jesus Christ, dear ones, for the first time and a million times. Ask Him to help us walk in the light, as He is in the light, to restore our fellowship with Him and with one another, and the blood of Jesus, God Son, purifies us from all sin. Let’s bury our roosters, and quit digging them up!

I grew up in a small town in NC with two brothers and four sisters, two nieces and a nephew, a Mama and a Daddy. I never heard a curse word or a vulgar word in that house from anyone ever. I guess my Daddy’s strong word was THUNDER. If he was upset about something, which very seldom happened, he would say what in the thunder or just thunder. There was no fussing, cursing, fighting. Nothing like that. I’m very old now and I still will not say any of the vulgar or hateful words we didn’t say when I was growing up. They didn’t even have to tell us not to speak a certain way. We just learned from them. My aunts, uncles and cousins lived all around us and only one aunt would occasionally say a curse word. I’m blessed beyond measure to have grown up in such a loving, sweet, kind, honest, hardworking family. Thank you dear God for all of my blessings.

You have no idea how much this episode helped me. Especially the points Zach and Al made towards the end. I was saved and know for a fact that I received the Holy Spirit. I also have been a p**n addict since I was 12. Have begged God to take it away. Confessed to my friends and pastors, have the software filters, etc. I've still relapsed countless times. Doing better now but its a daily fight. Those verses: Heb 10, Heb 6, and the upcoming Ephesians 5:3 have haunted me for years. Fearing I've blown it. Not a single pastor has been able to help calm my fears, but Zach brought me to tears with his short testimony. Here's a dude who actually gets it! God bless you guys!

I prefer not to watch movies with a bunch of cussing. Real life People, on the other hand, are different. I can control what movies I watch and listen to but the real world is a little more messy. We seek to bring broken people to Jesus. I don’t want to watch movies with four letter words every sentence or immodesty. That stuff is not good for your soul. Just my two cents.

I guess being older I never experienced the life JD did. I had a great childhood. But that being said Middletown is not the town it used to be. It's been sad seeing how drugs has taken over. What he says is true about our town.

I too grew up in Middletown. When I was a kid, we all, or most of us, had family who worked at Armco, or one of the several paper mills in town. My dad worked at Diamond International for years until he was able to get on a Armco, more money there. Back in 1958 I believe it was, Middletown was named an all American city.

The gentleman in the blue shirt speaking about how he felt when the young man told him his story, said something so profound and I don't think he even realized it. When God told us to love your neighbor as yourself, I don't think He meant love your neighbor as much "as you love yourself;" I think He meant love your neighbor, as if you were your neighbor. Listen to him the way you want to be heard; give your neighbor the understanding and compassion that you would hope for, if you had lived through what your neighbor has gone through, because you may have made the same mistakes, or made the same choices. So well said, brother.

Eventually I decided to say a Holy Name out loud if I cussed, to make reparations for the fault, and I would put a dab of soap on my finger and then wash my own mouth out if I cussed. Only took a few times. Dish soap is the worst/ best.😅

You've reminded me that it's an honor to be crucified with Christ. It's also helpful to know that all Christians go through this. No one ever talks about it. JD's story is tuff, but its common. There are many of us that lost our parents at very young age and did not hav a Grandparent to raise us. This world is very sympathetic to many race, religions, and creeds but 1 thing this world does not pity is a young white kid abandoned by his or her parents left alone to make there way the best they can. JD done well for himself and is a common story in America to millions of us. He seems like a good man to me but im still on the fence with him. To someone that had it much worse, nothing or nobody to turn to but God he seems like hes missing something or something is a lil out of place... I cant quite put my finger on it, and life has taught me not to judge but all that being said, i still have reservations about Mr. Vance. 1 thing for sure, and 2 for certain....... JD had better be every ounce of the man that Hollywood says he is. Because standing next to Trump his morality, his honesty, his toughness, and conviction will be tested....

As a cusser 3/4 of my life, after I got saved, it took it all away...99% of the time😢 I hit my thumb full swing with a hammer and said the "s" word in front of a preacher. My eyes popped outta my face and immediately covered my mouth. He politely giggled and said, "there is really only one curse word but the rest don't sound lady like." Ladies and gentle men are what I believe God would have us to strive for. When we have that mindset and being saved deep in our heart and soul, it will be a way of life not to say any "bad words" or never say the one curse word. God bless each and everyone ❣️✝️❣️❣️🙏❣️

I had a complete faith failure in my late teens and wasn’t sure if I was truly saved or not at that time but felt like I had blasphemed the Holy Spirit and placed myself beyond the hope of God’s grace and forgiveness even though since then I have placed all my hope in the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross for my sin and willful rebellion and believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead according to the promise in Romans 10:9-10, 13. I’m 61 years old now and have been worried about disqualifying myself from ever experiencing God’s grace and mercy for over 42 years. Please pray for me and give me some encouragement and hope. I almost committed suicide several times over this guilt from my past. Thank you in advance. Steve

sometimes you need to speak a persons language in order to be understood. Where you are and when you use it, if ever, is key. But I can't stand it when they use Gods name in vain or use the name Jesus as a cuss word. When I heard my daughter doing that I asked her if she wants me to use her best friends name as cuss word and she stopped! and I think we Christians should stop berating non-Christians for living life differently than we do. we need to be more concerned about showing them love as Christ loves and stop nitpicking all their actions!

I believe that each member of the Unashamed team passionately loves God and His Word and by the power of the Holy Spirit, teach and preach the gospel in the manner and style that God has individually gifted them. In our current church leadership culture where trust and truth are compromised, it is my opinion, (after diligently viewing the podcast for 4 years), that they are “the real thing”. With them, it is always about Jesus, yesterday, today, and forever.
