Phil, we do the same thing. We don't "pass the plate" but have a box in the back. People give so freely it's unimaginable. I know it is God that leads to giving. I recall as a child sitting in church and seeing people who just didn't have the money to put in the plate. We were in that position on more than one occasion. It stuck with me how embarrassed my mom must have been when she couldn't give. So when I was called to preach, I got with the elders of the church and we decided on a box. That way those that didn't have the money wouldn't be embarrassed.

As a believer and follower of Jesus, I am feeling refreshed and encouraged knowing that some of the teachings and situations I have questioned with the church that I used to attend are what you discuss on your podcasts. Thank you! I am glad to know after today's podcast that I am unashamed to speak out and not be in bondage to what doesn't give me inner peace. Here is a suggestion for a future topic of discussion (based on my experience) I know that many members of a congregation that I used to belong to) were offended with my opinion of the KZbin video they posted to explain how they were reopening. (Not once did I say the name of the church in my facebook post or that it was a video I saw) yet I was immediately attacked by several members who gave all sorts of excuses for why rhey would be complicit with the new "guidelines" from allowing the greeter to take your temperature to being offered a mask (personalized with the church name) to being escorted to your seat (not of your choosing) and after service, being dismissed one row at a time to outside the building where you were free to fellowship with others in the parking lot. The senior pastor also responded saying wearing a mask was not mandatory however, one of the members chose to attend another church that was not social distancing and was exposed to and infected with COVID-19. Hey, I totally understand the precautions BUT, how is all that going to translate to someone driving by who wants to attend a service. Hey, that church is open! If they are like me (no fear of the virus and not a mask wearer except to medical appointments--refuse to wear other than that because I cannot breathe with one on anyway), how do you suppose they might view that process? I would get right back in my vehicle and move right on. Also, one of my allies mentioned Psalm 91 to which the pastor cautioned not falling for that because satan used that. (Declaring Psalm 91 over myself and my family has kept us safe) I respectfully replied to the pastor and thanked him for his reply, but said politely that I hadn't been a member since before the pandemic and that what he and leadership decide for reopening is on them and that I would not be silent or complacent. There is so much that I don't agree with, including their views on tithing. I have always been one to want to help others and do so when I am able. It may be coffee and a sandwich from McDonalds or Burger King for a homeless person, clothes hanging in my closet I no longer wear, or give furniture to someone who needs it worse than me. God knows my heart and that is all that matters. He has blessed me with needs (that's all I've ever asked for) so when I am blessed with help in a time of need and there is extra, I share that with others.

Jesus said tithing was good and should not be neglected. (Matthew 23:23). He scolds religious leaders so focused on tithing and things they could boast about- that they "forget the weightier matters of the law". He said they should focus on the more important spiritual matters, but not forget to tithe, presumably because tithing helps the spread of the Gospel- and in many ways we are blessed when we give cheerfully. When we focus on the deeper spiritual things we SHOULD be more cheerful about giving because we feel honored and blessed to be able to support the important ministry works.

As far as gambling goes, though it may not be mentioned specifically in the Bible, I've always felt it could be covered under 1 Thessalonians 5:22 which states "Abstain from all appearance of evil." The way our pastor preaches “giving” - which is rarely, usually once a year, and we no longer have any “stewardship season” like many churches do - is that all that we have belongs to the Lord. He allows us to have those blessings (money, talent, gifts, etc), and it should be used for His Kingdom. I see a commitment to giving is the “tithe” to your church’s ministry, which is different than an offering, which is over and above-to other Kingdom or community things you may be praying about, or serve the needy, etc. - I think the 10% is a nice goal for those who don’t even know where to start. But, it all belongs to Him.

The verse about how it is impossible for a rich man to enter heaven is explained by: It was common back then that the Pharisees would teach having money meant you were doing something right and that having money meant that you would probably go to heaven. The verse where Jesus says it is impossible for a rich man to go to heaven is referring to that no one will go to heaven just because they are rich. Meaning that your riches will not get you to heaven. You are only saved through faith in Jesus Christ.

@@dfischer1709 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Matthew 19:16, 21 ESV bible.com/bible/59/mat.19.16-21.ESV The rich man was not interested in following Jesus. He wanted to save himself by good works and not by faith in Jesus. Notice how Jesus later says be perfect. Being perfect is not how we are saved. Jesus said this knowing that the rich man was only interested in saving himself with works and not following Jesus. Jesus also knew he was unwilling to abandon his money. Giving away all your money is not a requirement to being saved. Joseph of Arimethea had a lot of money.

i don't tithe to a church(i am not a member of any) but i do tithe to someone in need. if God puts them into my path and they need a hand($) i give it with the stipulation that once God blesses them that they give to someone God puts in their path as well. it has worked wonderfully. i have kept in touch with many of them and God has done wonders in their lives.

Everything anyone has all belongs to God. Whether they believe it or not, or believe in Him or not. The Living God causes it to rain on the just an the unjust alike.

It’s a very good way to take care of the needy. Most people won’t ask there Neighbor but they will go to their church.
