Phils E46 M3 CSL - Burkhart SMG Motor replacement

Phils off on paternity leave, so Jay is replacing the broken SMG motor on his M3 CSL while he's off. We're using a Burkhart upgraded SMG motor kit which is a superb comprehensive kit including their own SMG oil.

@Darren Boston I think it depends on mileage etc. I have seen plenty around the £40-50k mark. But sure if you want low miles, low owners etc then upwards of £80k is to be expected.

You are not fixing your SMG pump. You guys are replacing the stock motor with a under-powered Chinese motor sold by a German company. You have a bandage, not a solution. You guys must replace the internal and external gearshaft/solenoid seals to prevent internal leakage in which causes the motor to activate more often over working the motor which ultimately causes the motor to wear out very fast. Feel free to reach out if you would like a complete explanation.

@@ThaDutchDK1989 No car is faultless and fortunately, this one has great aftermarket support. If someone spent as much time and funds on the SMG system as Good M3 seems to have spent, then it is probably time to face the fact that the manual swap is the way to go. The manual was the spec to buy for the standard M3, day one, and BMW should have offered the CSL as a manual.

MLREng motors are much better. I've had a Burkhart motor in my car and didn't hold up after 6mnths. Put the MLREng motor in and it's been 3yr now. No complaints

The csl also came with 345mm front brakes instead of 325mm and bigger wheels and tyres. And that carbon roof was a pretty big deal in the early 2000's

You could have pointed out the oil dipstick that's special to the CSL that's hidden under the airbox lol Its always scary when you run the actuator through its full range of movements, sounds like it's going to break something lol. The earlier INPA software was much similar it would seem, fewer buttons to press that we all don't quite understand. Ignore the Google comment, but the CSL wheels are one of the best bits of a CSL, as well as the M Track mode on the diff.

I think it was Evo Magazine test at Bedford, CSL vs std M3, the CSL was something like 4 sec a lap faster over just 1.7 miles...That's an astonishing improvements, especially over such a short distance.

The gains seemed invisible to most when new but the track is where the CSL shines, but now most of them shine under lights in a collection because of the ever increasing price. Other than the smg, we all appreciate now, they were a brilliant driver's car and they were that much better than a standard M3...very uncomfortable on a long journey though 😂👍🏼

SMG haters. Ugh I have two 05's, one being an SMG. I honestly enjoy driving the SMG more than the manual because it shifts gears quicker and I just think it's cool. I've also made it look like a real CSL and of we all know that it came with the dreaded smg.

There is no denying SMG is flawed. You can shift a manual just as fast & it's pretty damn unreliable. That said, it's what the CSL is supposed to have & adds to the whole experience. If a seamless DCT swap was a thing I'd do it in a heartbeat though.

Now this car is rare and very expensive much more than ordinary m3. The worse part is SMG, it could be much more of a car with manual but swaping it will depritiate the price quite badly :) purist e46 a good investment and rear window glass is thinner :)

John Peat actually my friend it’s not good for the glass as on the e46 you can adjust the glass. The more you close the door using the glass the more you loosen the adjuster that supports the glass to make sure it’s not floppy

Csl has different, wheels roof, bumper, the seats are 50% lighter then regular m3 as well as all the undertrays, CSL airbox of course, csl transmisson tune, the steering wheel is different the the regular m3. Did you know that on paper a SMG BMW E46 M3 is slower then some guy in a manual banging gears.

Also lighter rear window, different king pins. Larger diameter brake discs in the front and larger piston in rear caliper, bigger exhaust valve, different lower rear control arm and smaller things like fewer airbags, smaller battery etc.

The only thing you can value is the airbox? Not the fact it weighs 150kg less, light weight wheels, and a faster steering rack, it’s still nearly as fast as a new v8 vantage round the Nurburgring.🙄

Pretty sure they'd have issues on the 2-3 shift occasionally, and I think if you try and start the car with the door open it'll knacker the pump. I'm sure it's brilliant to drive when it's working nicely, but I'd be hesitant about buying one

Wheels aren't mag. Brakes & rack are correct though. What Jay (and Starkey) are missing is that it's a complete package, Everything that needed to be improved was improved & it's the most special car BMW has built in the last two decades.

It’s the same gearbox, just a different shift mechanism, so yes.

Speedacademy have recently converted one in their M3 build, but they've swapped the engine out to a 2JZ. Like Oli Sharp said, it's actually the same manual gearbox that is controlled by a computer and hydraulic pumps. Very old fashioned by today's standards and would be very disappointing if you got in one after driving something with a DCT or ZF box in it.
