I have been a Psychologist for over 30 years. In my opinion there is really little if any difference in practice between the PsyD and PhD... I would focus on getting accepted into an APA APPROVED program and APA APPROVED INTERNSHIP. This will make a difference in career opportunities for many setti gs.

Yes, the PsyD holder can certainly work in research!! It might be easier to work in research in a psyd school versus a phd school, but many psyd graduates can and may work in research. Psyd may be a great option if you want the clinical practice as well as the research.

I would love to hear how you tailored yourself and application in applying to the Psy.d program. How were your GRE scores, your personal statement & recommendation letters. What do you think made your application stand out to be accepted into your Psy.d program? Also, is your cohort in your program small or large? & more so, personally, if you care to share, how are you paying for your Psy.d program? Love your channel & your content.

Thank you so much for the support it means a lot! For the GRE, personal statement, and recommendation letters I actually did a video not too long ago, (kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZjRlY2Qdtp7fLc&ab_channel=Phil%27sGuidetoPsy.D. ) feel free to check it out! I think what made my application stand out was probably my clinical experience and letters of recommendation. My cohort size is small, 14 people, so a little smaller for a psyd program. And as of right now I'm paying for grad school mostly through student loans but there are other people in my program that are attempting to join the navy. There are many options (navy, military, army) or some scholarships that will pay for grad school when students commit to working in a rural environment for a number of years so there are a number of options. Also, most psyd programs grant students a few scholarships when they get accepted. Hope that answers some of your questions. I plan on doing more videos specifically about the GRE so stay tuned!

Hi Phil, thanks so much for the video! So to help me understand better, PsyD is mainly for hands on experience with clients whereas PhD is for research typically? I want to make sure I fully understand so that way I can align myself up with the correct career path. I see myself counseling, sitting down and talking with individuals that way I can diagnose them .. not really deal with math and research 😅 so I should focus on getting my PsyD right? Thank you so much for your help!

Have you heard of the “Apprentice Junior Colleague” model? If so can you help explain it? I’m looking into a PhD in clinical psychology from Ualbany and that’s what it says they follow, however the science-practitioner model sounds like the best fit for me.. thanks! 😊
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, I have heard about the "Apprentice Junior Colleague" model, which does indeed fit with the science-practitioner model. Most likely, faculty members collaborate with the students, the student might help the faculty member with their research and sort of begin learning the basic tools needed for research in the first few years. Later in the program, the student becomes more independent, starts to do more of the research that they are interested in and likely makes most of the research and clinical interpretations on their own with the faculty member there as a guide. Hope that makes sense! The science-practitioner model is great! Let me know if you have any questions or videos you would like to see :)

Thank you! Yes, I think depending on the program either phd or psyd would be great! It also depends what you specifically want to do, but if you can find a program that has that specialty or where students have the available experience while in school then either phd/psyd would work! Hope that helps, good luck on your journey!

@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! Anyone with a masters or phd/psyd in counseling or clinical psychology has the opportunity to do private practice. If you enjoy the research and would like to teach the phd might give you more teaching and professorship opportunities, although there are plenty of psyd professionals who also work in academia. Whichever school aligns more with your passions might help, as well as seeing where graduates from programs are currently working (you might get this information from the school website) to see if any of the alumni are working in places/environments/populations that you also want to work in, that might help narrow the choices for applying and what degree to go for

Hi! Great question, there’s a ton of options, really just depends on what’s best for you! If you already have the prerequisites you could apply to some programs who don’t require a psychology degree and skip the masters. But if you want more experience first a masters might be helpful but there’s no right answer it just depends on how you want to get there! Hope that helps!

Hi yea that’s a great question. Many clinical psychologists PhD will do only therapy work and clinical work. So even with a PhD you can choose to focus on clinical practice. Psyd and PhD are the same profession but the schools offer a little different experiences based on what the student is interest in. So after you get the PhD it’s completely up to you on how you want to shape your career! Hope that helps!

thank you so much this was so detailed! do you mind answering this question for me - with a masters in psychology were you still able to get clinical jobs in private practice or whatever and work w patients ?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks so much for this question! I actually did a video about this question not long ago kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5jXhWqHjN6aZ5Y In short, though, it's a loaded question but I'll do my best to answer. A master's in psychology will get you clinical jobs but you may have to work under supervision under a licensed psychologist. This also depends on the state. Some states limit clinical jobs when only having a master's in psychology so I know a number of people who got licensed as a marriage family therapist (MFT) after getting their master's in psychology in order to work independently in private practice and with patients. This however required a licensure exam, and I believe a year or 2 of working under supervision to fulfill state requirements, allowing them to become independent. Sometimes instead of a master's in psychology, people just get a master's in social work (LCSW) or (MFT) or licensed professional counselor (LPC) which are all 2-year master's programs where from there they can work independently in private practice, and with patients. The nice thing about a master's in psychology though is that sometimes people will later go back to school to get their doctorate whereas if they only had an LPC for example, and they wanted to be a clinical psychologist, they would have to start all over in a 4-6 year program. So having a master's in psychology (specifically clinical psychology), even though it may not provide a diverse range of jobs, has its benefits if someone later wants to go back to school and get their doctorate because they can do it in less time.

I did but I wasn't sure I wanted to get a PsyD until after my masters. I def encourage anyone that if you know PsyD is for you to apply right after undergrad unless you need to take a break because masters programs can be expensive, take more time, and be repetitive when it comes to some of the course work. I only tell people to look at masters programs if they need to raise their gpa, didn't study psychology in undergrad, or maybe need more research/clinical experience from a masters level psychology program. It sounds like you're in great shape, best of luck!

Hi thank you so much, for this video! I was confused on whether I should go for the phd or psyd but I learned a lot after this video. So, the psyd doctorate degree you can do the same things as a PhD doctor so does that mean the pay is the same?
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question! Generally most people/sources will say that Phd pays more on average maybe like (5-10,000) more but there's so many varying degrees like location, years of experience, and the type of work that a clinical psychologist does that I think even with a PsyD it is very possible to make just as much or more than a Phd. The PhD has been around longer than a PsyD and more doctoral schools tend to hire PhD's because of research, therefore, working in academia tends to pay more, so I think that's a big part of the difference in pay since PsyD's will most likely spend their time in clinical practice rather than research and teaching.

Is the semester system better than the quarter system for the PsyD program? What would you recommend? Thank you :)
@philsguidetopsyd
@philsguidetopsyd 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Right now I am in a semester system and I really enjoy it! I went through that all through college and grad school so it's one that I'm very used to. I know other people are used to the quarter system so they prefer it based on comfortability. I wish I knew more about the quarter system, but I would say it depends on the person! There are people that like the quarter system, which has shorter semesters and less work load, but longer durations for the year. The semester system is jam packed with courses but there are longer summer and Christmas breaks. Depending on your personality, one might fit better with you, but if you have a chance to ask students from both systems about what they like and the pros and cons I would highly recommend that!
