Trees can be a difficult subject. Tree studies allow you a chance to practice without the pressure of producing a finished painting.

Trees were something I veered away from because they seemed so difficult. In the past year I've been catching on, and this video has helped so much. Thanks so much.

The human eye can detect vast amounts of variations in the green hue spectrum more so than any other colour. This may be due to our sensory development through human evolution. As once our planet was covered in a green dense forest canopy along with saturated green foliage & vegetation. Having the ability to differentiate greens from other colours along with prey - predator or enemy would be beneficial for survival as would harvesting identified ripe seasonal fruits or vegetables. So put colourful temperate topographical differences into your inches particularly greens and smuggle complementary reds into your mixing ! Best wishes & happy painting.

Thanks Phil for the video. I've been wanting to learn more about gouache for plein air painting. It seems like a really good medium for it. Less stuff and less mess to carry than my usual medium of oils.

It is a lot easier to deal with, don’t have to worry about paint thinner or big easels. Good to travel with.

Why would you choose guache? Why not acrylic? I’ve always just done watercolor and pastel.

Hi Judith, Gouache is a little easier to work with than acrylic, specially outside.
