Capturing the light can be an important part of painting, because it's the light that suggests the form and it's the light that brings out the color.

Phil, your video is priceless! An accent on temperature is hard to control for me, as a beginner and you make it understandable. Thank you.

Phil I really like the way you explain and show with examples how to approach these things. I have learned a lot about colour temperature from watching your wonderful videos. The “rim lighting “ you show here really works against the cooler temperature background and creates a sense of depth in the painting that a camera or photograph cannot do. I really like the way you paint your trees. There is no great detail in them, but they look so good, I think it is the way you are mottling the paint combined with the color temperature contrast. This is difficult to do , not to get caught up in all the individual leaves. Your trees look so good because they are so “full” looking without all of the individual leaves , not sure if I am saying it right. It seems you are perhaps using 2-3 values combined with 2-3 temperature contrast? Great information here Phil. Thanks for this.

Thanks Mike, Yes I block in with a simple dark and light value, then add one or 2 more in the shadow and light, fewer the better. Value and color temperature are the king. Thanks for watching.

This video is a must watch for all aspiring 👩‍🎨. This is the concept of real art versus photography so succinctly described in a concise tutorial. The importance of color temperature and value and how to project it on canvas. Sir, I salute your teaching method.

Oh how I wish I knew this 20 years ago! Of course,. I don't know that I would have recognized this as the solution! Lol! I was out sitting under trees with the sun lighting the outside leaves. It was my first time trying to catch that kind of light in watercolor. I did not succeed but it was unforgettable.

what is the best way of getting the values from a photograph does photoshop or any other free programmes have way of seeing values with colors not just black and white picture conversion, what best for helping to start oil painting, wanting to learn to paint in oils any help in where I aught to be looking to have technology help me in this as I hear copy or tracing etc.. is ok for artists to use. thanks
