@@larrybud....if thats what you think this is about, you have no idea why people get into this "hobby"... This is about teaching yourself and effectively becoming a true craftsman machinist...its about gaining a deep understanding of engineering and materials and how the world around us would cease to exist without such knowledge... Its also fun to be able to do stuff most others have no clue about ...😂 Would you ask a scientist to "make something useful" when clearly his goal is not that ??... 🙄

@@peterfitzpatrick7032 Not sure why you're taking my comment so personally. You do what makes you happy. I make jigs and tool improvements to my woodworking tools all the time, but in the end, I make functional stuff. But there are channels dedicated to tool making. Doesn't interest me. But this is very similar to the 3d printing world. Some people just like to tinker with the machines. I like to make stuff with them.

Softer aluminum alloys which are designed for use in forming operations always turn up burrs even when the end mill is in good condition. If you stack these sheets together and make multiple parts at a time, then you'll find the middle pieces do not get burrs. Of course, this technique requires using a thicker top plate to prevent the sheet stock from chattering and causing all parts to end up with burrs.

As a first time viewer to your channel: I find myself mildly enthusiastic with your lathe updates, and so on. Your ideas into actions are now mine to remember. Thank you. In section 41:50...51...52... you used cable-ties to help with the accordion-chip-cover. As I haven't actually tried this idea with an accordion it my not work. However, perhaps using key-rings might do the trick. It's what I'd probably try, anyway. Good luck, and thanks for the ideas and info.

Having gone down this track too with a 1930 vintage Colchester Bantam lathe, I can understand the satisfaction you get when the project is complete and working.......not a fan of the concertina way covers.........most lathes I worked on had felt seals and brass shim way wipers to scrape the swarf off.

quick question: do you find that having the tool post canted out causes rigidity problems? it would seem to put a big moment on the dove tails vs pushing them directly down.
@PhilVandelay
@PhilVandelay Жыл бұрын
Can't say it does, I built this solid toolpost to improve rigidity compared to the top slide (which I only use now when I need it for tapers) and it is definitely a lot more rigid than that. I never thought about the force on the dovetails, interesting point! But it doesn't seem to cause any problems

All very nice! In some shots, it a 3 axis DRO, and in some and the final shot, it's a 2 axis. What gives? Also, I have the same DRO on my mill and I really like it. I'm thinking about getting the same one for my lathe, and 3 axis in case I need or want to put it on my other mill. This DRO does not have a Tool library, but I think that I can us the SDM function for a tool library. What are your thoughts?
@PhilVandelay
@PhilVandelay Жыл бұрын
It's a 3 axis display but I only use 2 of them on the lathe. At some point I taped over one of the display axis just to make it a bit easier to read. Reason is simply that with these import DROs, the 2 axis display is only slightly cheaper (few bucks) so I figured it can't hurt to have the option to connect a third scale. As for the SDM function, I always figured that's for a tool library anyway, but never actually configured it. I mess with my tool holders and overall setup too much to fully trust it, so I just zero out the tools manually. You can also now get an adapter that allows you to connect glass scales to something like an old smartphone or tablet with an app to use that as the DRO display. It's quite interesting because they offer a lot more features than the classic displays, been thinking about trying that out for a while
@KW-ei3pi
@KW-ei3pi Жыл бұрын
@@PhilVandelay Thanks. I'm still learning to use the one I bought for the mill. I use the SDM function all the time. One thing to remember is that if you zero in Absolute mode, it messes up all the SDM settings.
@PhilVandelay
@PhilVandelay Жыл бұрын
@@KW-ei3pi Yeah, I noticed that! That's why I started using INC most of the time and didn't use the SDM feature a lot, I always end up zeroing absolute by accident sooner or later and then you have to start over. I'm not sure but maybe this behaviour can be turned off, but I didn't study the manual again. I suppose it kind of does make sense if you treat ABS as the zero reference for everything else.

@PhilVandelay
@PhilVandelay Жыл бұрын
You could make some kind of indexing system with dowl pins to get the toolpost back in the same position maybe. Also, for centering the drill, you might not even necessarily need the DRO, it can be done by eye to some extent. I suggest to watch Stefans video, he explains it in great detail
@ADBBuild
@ADBBuild Жыл бұрын
You could buy a bushing and a dowel pin that fit together, then use them to align things quickly. Put the bushing in the lathe chuck and the dowel in the tool post chuck and adjust until it slides in easy. If you have a quick change tool post, you would probably only need to adjust the cross slide as the height would already be set.
