It's just horrible he's gone. Maybe a bit "selfish Gene" of me, but a world without more of his music isn't one I'm happy about. RIP Walter ... never met you, and we're much worse off without your music and poetry contributions to the universe.

I love this song, it's one of my favorite Becker tracks. Proof that Japanese bonus tracks are sometimes as essential as the main album. The synth horns are particularly cool. The verse melody reminds me a bit of Gaslighting Abbie, and it wouldn't be surprising if it inspired that, given that SD were always revisiting old outtakes.
@PhilWatson9 жыл бұрын
Agreed Mike Spencer, Don't know why Japan always get these rarities?
@hdofu7 жыл бұрын
This album had some great tracks, and some great out takes. Lies I can believe was good out take.
@Sphat907 жыл бұрын
Apparently Japanese CDs cost more than it would to import a European or US copy, so they include bonus tracks to offset it. If this album had had a single, we might have seen this as b-side, but it didn't. There are five other outtakes from the album, Fall Of 92, Sampaiku, Ghost Of Hipness Past, Lies I Can Believe and Three Sisters Shakin'. Makes a nice EP. Becker compiled 11 Tracks Of Whack from several different home-recorded tapes, so who knows how many other tracks might be out there.
@hdofu7 жыл бұрын
Mike Spencer you are correct, that said bonus region tracks are not something exclusive to japan, On Becker's second album he has a bonus track exclusive to Europe Dark Horse Dub, also a pretty good tune

Thanks-Walter Becker is one of the most underrated musicians ever,I mean Walter and Donald wrote the book on cool,suave LA music and they were from NYC.Steely Dan is by far my favorite band ever,and my musical"tree" started with them.By paying attention to the session musicians names and the producers names I learned about Jazz,Fusion,Early R&B and really all about good music.

They achieved an "LA Sound" on a host of their recordings, but there was that "Sturm and Drang" always as an underpinning...the East Coast cynicism and street-wise scowl wafting through not only the lyrics but the sax highlights and often the percussive backdrop......don't you agree?
@Claytone-Records4 жыл бұрын

LA is NYCWest...has been since the 60s. Its culture was transplanted directly from The Big Apple, to where it could grow/flourish/mutate in warmer, wider, sunnier pastures. El Lay is, at root, a spinoff of the old, classic NYC tragi-sit-com.

Many thanks for uploading this..... I have been a huge Steely Dan fan for 40+ years ever since I first heard one of their songs on the radio way back in the mid-70's. I loved all their work, and all of Donald Fagen's solo albums. I came late to the solo work of Walter Becker, and at first found it hard to get into, but after giving those 2 albums a few listens they have become some of my favorite Dan related music. This is a great bonus as I did not know of its existence (being a bonus track), was sad to hear of Walters demise - so many of my rock heroes have died off over the last few years, just makes one appreciate the music even more.

You're welcome. That's where it all started with me too. Probably my fav decade musically but then I could be a bit biased! ;) Especially love Don and Walt - together or apart. If you're interested, some revitalised rarities have recently been added to www.walterbeckermedia.com/

"11 tracks of whack" was the best album of the 90's (especially if you include this song)Walter plays incredible guitar/bass on this album.And I think we can see where the cryptic lyrics of Steely Dan pretty much came from.I had somebody ask me what Steely Dan would have been without Walter Becker,my response was "I dont know what would the Beatles have been without John Lennon or Alan Parson Project without Eric Woolfson"My answer= they would never have existed
