As someone who grow up listening to a ton of phish in high school, and now in my 30s able to replicate what he does on guitar, I cannot express how cool it is to have his methods broken down like this. I know this video is old but my algorithm is just picking it up now. Awesome work man. Thank you

I've struggled to understand modes for 40 years and your explanation finally makes them clear to me. I came to this video after seeing the one on dorian which explained how to solo over a dorian progression. Now I have to search your channel in hopes of finding similar lessons on soloing to the other modes.

Have to say i've been struggling for years with the theory side of guitar playing - despite all the youtube tutors. but i've had so many "light bulb" moments only having watched a couple of your videos - thank you so much. just goes to show "it ain't what you say, it's the way you explain it". great lessons keep them coming.

Stich.. you simply are one of the best!! And I don't just mean playing a guitar.. where I'm from we say that guy is good peoples!! I cut my teeth on Jerry when I started playing and delved deep into the multiple styles he used then I went to see my first Phish show at US Air arena in 95 and needless to say I was hooked. I've always said Jerry and Trey were so similar but their take on the Dorian was perfectly different. Jerry was super melodic and Trey chopped up making him unique and creating his sound without sounding like a copycat. Probably the hardest thing to do as a musician when you have so many influences is that.. finding out who you are!! Keep making videos bro!!!

Great Job, have to check out some Phish, I really love how you point out the theory behind how and why you would highlight certain notes and mainly the reason why it sounds so good. Thanks again Ian for the Great Vids, SEAN has some competition ;) LOL I really do enjoy both of your styles of teaching. You both have your own ways of making points clear and both styles are appreciated.

Hello Ian, If you have the time i would appreciate it so much if you did a video on modes! I've watched countless videos but the teachers never seem to get to the point. All i need is a good explanation of what they are, how to apply them in my playing, and anything else you think I'd need to know about them.

Would it be correct the Dorian scale you are playing in Am7 is the same as starting on the second note of the G Maj scale? Nice playing on the intro by the way. I see you answered my question in an earlier comment. Thanks for the lesson.

What you do just makes sense to me. I am very grateful. Am I correct to think this Dorian mode works really well to fit into the eyes of the world jam? B minor 7th correct? Fun to play around in there-- this is the first time the Dorian mode has clicked for me... probably because we are just bouncing around one chord!
@dedhed80228 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure jerry mixes E Ionian and E mixolydian scales during eyes. that's where u can get that chromatic from C# to E using D and D#.. that's how i think of it anyway. oh and with allot of appegios.. maybe Mr. stitch can elaborate someday ;)
@edwardfjohnson5 жыл бұрын
VT Native here. Grew up with them. My question is that if this is an A Dorian scale it's derived from G Major since A is the Dorian of G, right? In this case the notes being played are A B C D E F# G - right?

Right 👍👍

Thanks Man, modes are always a challenge, so it's called A Dorian but the notes of the G major scale, or am I confused as always?
@PaulJonesy8 жыл бұрын
Peter Langford the modes relate to the intervals of the scale, so for G you have G (Ionian), A (Dorian), B (Phrygian), C (Lydian), D (Mixolydian), E (Aeolian), F# (Locrian)

G major scale with an A root so what key is the song, just trying to get my head around it?

Thanks mate!
@kevinfollmer66188 жыл бұрын
I've been watching your videos (which have been great) and thought I understood but this kinda confused me. So this song is in G Major (which has the same notes as A Dorian) and A seems to be your "home". What about an example where a song claims to be in A minor (A is your home). Would you just say that song is in C major but you're playing in the A Aeolian mode? Sorry if this is confusing.
@DidNotReadInstructions6 жыл бұрын
Can't this also be thought of as the key of G Major? Second mode. A Dorian. Can't one just jam in G Major to this focusing on the A note. I really like this video. It's all perspective, no? Is that Major sixth the F sharp note?

I understand why you added that note in the beginning about the length of your solo. But for those of you that have come here to learn, listening to a solo (especially one that you are trying to learn verbatim) should not feel 'long'. You need to be able to internalize it by listening to it over and over, and then you'll be able to break down and understand exactly what is being played.
@lgp49608 жыл бұрын
The guitar channel audio is much louder than your voice channel, this makes it very difficult to understand
