Part I of a TV interview I did with Phish at the State Theatre in Kalamazoo, MI on the day of their June 19, 1994 appearance there.
I must mention that after the interview I made a request of Trey for that evening's show: Run Like an Antelope. Check the setlist... :-)

This is actually classic improv. They might not be trained in comedic improv but they are definitely doing it organically.

@@stucothe Beatles and Grateful Dead were funny as shit, Phish are a lot nicer and spend a lot more of their time working on music but theyre still pretty funny sometimes. Also the Beatles

Trey's Mom was an enormous influence on him and thus on Phish. She encouraged him to write songs. He wrote a song called 'If I were a dog' which is now the final section of Lizards that everyone loves. Hum the first five notes and you'll see how 'If I were a dog' fits. Now Phish donates huge sums of time and money to children's musical education.

Yeah, it wasn't until after I scored the interview that I realized I had no idea how to do the interview! I'm just a gawky, starry-eyed, gushing fan who's so nervous he keeps cutting off the guests - embarrassing yes, but entertaining nonetheless!

This is amazing. And btw...I tested real quick what questions I'd be able to pop off the top of my head for an interview of my favorite band and this would be all them: um...hi! I love you guys! Thank you'". The end. So yeah....great fkn job man!

You did great. You can tell they knew you were a fan and still were very cool and playful and never demeaning. Such a great thing to have on film. Thumbs up, been really loving this band lately.

"patterns weave interamongs. interamongst weaving of the patterns" i am cracking up. they are so funny. in some interviews with trey he said he knew his addiction needed to stop because he lost his sense of humor. he says his humor with the band mates was "seven layers deep." i think we are witnessing their humor on a deep level in this video. god, the roles/rolls. LOL

What an awesome view into the brilliance of Phish... word play being a part of their creative strength in songwriting. The whole "role" section with Cactus topping it off with "honor roll" brings a deep moment of nostalgic glee during which I completely forget all problems of today recalling a time when all was well or so it seemed in the world...what a different time it was! Thanks Phish and interviewer.

this was hours after maybe the most epic phish night...UIC Pavilion, 6-18-94. IMO best night ever. Trey discusses divided silent jam in a later interview (2003) as a magical moment. now i understand why they all look blown away...what a bunch of goofballs

Thanks for mentioning the UIC show, Doug. I ran a search and found it posted here on YT. You're right. The set's sick and they sounded great! It makes total sense they'd basically be zombies the next day. In the comments under that show, one lucky bastard notes that as his first show! Needless to say, he was hooked after that.

Brad Sittloh My first show was in 94 at the Bomb Factory in Deep Ellum Dallas, TX. I feel super lucky to have been there and knew at the time too. Later, I found out that was regarded in the top 5, but also have heard that it is regarded as their best show ever. I wish I would have been to more Phish shows in that period, like the one you guys are talking about. Seems it was a good year for them!

Good deal fellas. No doubt 94 was an epic year. I'm actually a poser, my first show was 95. Regardless of superlatives, I'm so grateful to be at any show where the musical heavens opened up! Glad to share the experience. I've had a thank you letter set aside for the guys for some time now...I should send it eh
