The best thing about this video is that people will either hear Phish for the first time here or overcome some preconceptions and give them an honest listen. I am happy for those people. Some will discover a new passion that will be a blessing to them for the rest of their lives. Thanks Rick. I love the channel, especially the interviews with the behind the scenes folks.

For years I tried to eat it. Eventually, I got used to it and now I love it. I’ve tried Phish many times. I cannot get into it.

I used to live a few miles from Deer Creek (don't know what it's called now, I call it the original name) which is an outdoor venue in central Indiana. It was always fun when the Grateful Dead or Phish would come and do three or four shows in a row for a whole week. Because I was so close to the campgrounds, we would always open up my house and let people shower, I would grill brats and burgers and not charge a penny for them, things like that. I only had one problem with one of the Phisheads and that was just because he had done too much Molly and was out of his mind. For the most part the fans are courteous, respectful and always appreciative. I had a giant oak tree in my front yard and I would have ten or fifteen Deadheads/Phisheads sitting under it with someone playing guitar, someone with bongos and my wife would bring out a pitcher of lemonade and ice water and we would just jam. I miss those days.

Not enough people respect the one of a kind genius of Phish, they're my favorite band of all time. I had no idea you that connection to Trey Rick, that's awesome...I'm an even bigger fan now. Phish has an endless expanse of songs, they've been touring since the late 80's with only 2 breaks, they're still putting out albums...I can never put into proper words what this band means to me. I'm glad to see, slowly but surely, people are getting past their preconceived notions about what Phish is all about and checking them out. You really won't find a better 4 piece set of musicians in music. Inventive, uplifting, extremely skilled, funky, energetic, eclectic, original...I could go on for days lol

Never really listened to Phish before, even though they were releasing music in "my era". Great song. As I listened to you describing how the melody works with the chord progression it got me thinking about one of my favourite courses from my undergraduate degree. In my 4th year at university, I had some extra credit space to take up so I decided to take a course offered by my school's music faculty for non-music students. It was call "Popular Music in Society". The course calendar described it as a survey of popular music. It sounded like an easy, fun course to lighten the load in my final semester of my final year. It was taught by the wife of the bass player from the band "Spirit of the West". On the first day of class about 50 people showed up. The professor walked in and the first words out of her mouth were "everybody is here for songwriting, correct?" She then described that the course work would be writing songs and performing them in front of the class. A little more than half the class got up and walked out. I decided to stay. Over the next 4 months, we went through a series of excercises and projects that had us creating our own lyrics and developing melodies. It was scary at first for an economics major but really fun. The reason this video got me thinking about that was when you were describing the relationship between notes in the melody and the chord progression. It got me to thinking about a few questions with regards to song writing and developing melodies. What is a more effective way to write music, develop a melody idea fist and build a chord progression around it or develop a chord progression idea first and find the melody in the chord progression? Or is it a mix of a bit of both? And what makes a better song? Love your videos. I always learn something when you break down these songs.

Excellent commentary, Rick. Waste is one of Phish's most fundamental compositions, and a good example of deceptive simplicity. I owned White Crow Audio in Burlington, the studio where Phish recorded A Picture of Nectar, and Rift in the early nineties. Even back then, these four guys had already developed into formidable musicians. They maintained a strict rehearsal schedule and focused 100% on developing their music. It showed.

When I tell people “I’m not the biggest fan” all I mean is, I’m not a fan of that band, player, singer, or genre but I ALWAYS respect & enjoy the breakdown Rick does of their immense talents, & he is an awesome player! Now if I say: “I hate this Band guy or gal” that means in my opinion they’re overrated & or have as much talent as I do! I’m not a bad player actually but to be GREAT? An artist needs to be so above my level regardless if I’d practice 10 hours a day! I’d never be* as good.

@@mikeaustin4138 I would agree, I have always been proud of being able to pick things out of songs and hear every instrument individually while also hearing the band as a whole. Rick's WMTSG series sheds a TON of light on things that I didn't even realize were there. Songs like "Black" that I swore I could hear every part of. I missed the piano even though it's obvious that it's there. What I'm getting at is that there will be bands that although I'm not a fan of them, the amount of effort that goes into their art is something that I respect and admire about them, even though, like I said, I wouldn't be a fan of their music.

PHISH???! Let me be one of the ones to say that I am absolutely thrilled beyond belief that you are incorporating Phish in your music series. I am a drummer and an avid musician and let me tell you that there is less than 1% of musicians that have the skill level and raw talent of Trey, Mike, John, and Page. They are all masters of their instruments.

Trey has excellent time because he actually started as a drummer. In the live show he plays drums any time they bring Henrietta out from behind the tubs to front the band. It's also why a lot of his compositions are rhythmically interesting as well as sonically. And if you're going to break down a song, please make it something like that (rhythmically and sonically interesting). Something like 'It's Ice' or 'Guyute' would be incredible. Keep up the excellent work!

Trey is one of those people that seem to have an endless amount of musical creativity, a musical savant! He's someone that understands music in ways most of us never will but he knows how to translate it for us when need be! I could also listen to him talk all day! I absolutely love the BBC interview he did where he discusses what it was like at the end. He talks about the group of fans that he would see at every show and how he hopes they knew it was time to be done as well. Anyway, great episode as always Mr Beato!

I originally grew up in Vermont and Phish was a huge influence on me musically back in the 90s (prompting me to procure a Ross compressor and a couple TS9's thinking I could sound remotely like Trey lol), and I still see them when I can, my aunt used to live across the field from the Barn there in the Underhill area and I would hear noodling long into the wee hours many nights. Thanks for this Rick, in my opinion Billy Breathes is really an amazing showcase of brilliant songwriting, jam-band or not, I think its sort of their Sgt Peppers, as they were absolutely firing on all cylinders at that point( folks who saw them live during this time almost unanimously agree). Knowing your history with Trey its super cool to hear you break this down brother, thanks!
