Just listened to this for the first time (I recently began exploring the band). Wow. I think my jaw dropped at least three times. Truly amazing.

Haven’t listened to every tweezer ever but been a long time fan, put in some hours listening to phish and this is one of their all time greatest jams. From start to finish. Love treys tone here, raw, like a singer who has a bit of a cold, gives the voice a rasp that cant be replicated. His tone was so smooth thru the 90s and this ‘new’ tone wasn’t appreciated by everyone at the time. Their playing wasn’t appreciated at the time. They were sloppy and unpolished compared to the 90s BUT it produced some of the greatest jams of their career. Round Room perfectly captured where the band was then, spontaneous, loose, raw, not very healthy but truly creative and stunningly gorgeous at its best. This jam has all those qualities.

I love his tone here! You can hear more nuance; it's more "transparent" and less compressed in comparison to the '90s. Not better, just different. By this point, he had retired his old Ross compressor and may or may not have been using an Analogman-modded version. The band's overall sound quality here is very clean.

This was the logical progression of what they were doing in 2000. Who could unlearn all the facts that theyd learned. Phish has never felt wrong to me in the big picture. Always an organic expression of the psychedelic vision

I've heard certain jams by a few bands hundreds of times and I honestly feel like 12:30 - 16:45 of this song is the best 4 minutes of any jam ever played. This spontaneous key change is as close to perfection as improvised music can be- the whole band in flow state.

@easytoslipE2S5 жыл бұрын
Having started seeing shows in the 90s, and then being at shows in the early 2000s, 2003 had some dark feelings to it; something that may not come through in recordings? People who say no good jams in 2003 are likely comparing specifically to the peaky rage that is the 90s. Or if for instance your first shows were in 2003, it's likely you'll consider that an awesome year. It's all personal and perspective-based. There are vlogs citing great jams from the 'oxy years'. Any way around it, Phish discussion in all its forms is great fun! ♥

In my mind the best tweezer I've heard, this jam coupled with almost every jam at IT ,made 2003 the last truly good year of phish in my mind. I try to listen now and it doesn't compare. Listen to Ya mar, chalkdust, birds,Reba , 46 days, ghost from IT and you'll realize you won't hear that type of jamming now a day's. Just my opinion.

+denise johnson Ah yes, had this show11-17-97 on tape back in the day. Very nice. I'm assuming you were referring to the tweezer opener. Very good as well. If I were comparing the two, I would say this one had more funk and was more danceable. Where for me, personally, this tweezer has more emotional value and sonic exploration and improv. One is not better than the other, just different levels for me. Thanks for the throwback, 97 was the first year that I actually started following shows , it has a nostalgic quality for me. Thanks TW/BV
