I think it's because WT maps are too small for after burner jets. If you maintain a speed above Moch you would be overshooting the enemies and over their air base within a couple minutes

If you launch from very far away (something like 30km+) from higher alt (4km+) and above mach 1 the missiles will go into loft mode which will greatly increase their range. *EDIT: Yes the missile will still go into loft mode when launched at long range from low speed and altitude but it will not be as effective since the missile will burn a lot of it's fuel climbing and accelerating through the thick air and will not reach it's full potential.

That's not really how the real one works though.. The F-14 WCS ( Weapon control system) decides , based on target distance , if the missile should loft or not. At these ranges you're almost in ACM (air combat manouvering) mode. When fired in ACM mode the missile leaves the rail with it's own radar already on and does not loft. Unfortunately gaijin modeled almost everything wrong. So it's nothing like the real one in terms of capabilities.

Eh, I would say a DCS guy would get wiped here, and that's because whatever system this is- it's nothing like the F14. And that's not bad, it's just how warthunder be. I'm a DCS main, I think the F14 in DCS incredibly well done, and it's embarrassing that gaijin with more profits can't even begin to match the quality. That said WTs meta and tactics are completely wacko bazoo compared to the procedural, simulated version DCS provides. Again for some unspoken reason people seem to believe that warthunder and DCS both aim to provide an accurate simulated experience, when only DCS can do that. I always say *_until you can apply and use IRL tactics effectively with your systems, it ain't realistic._* Realism isn't everyone's cup of tea, and it's why DCS players cringe at that one WT guy that says it's just like the real thing, and why that other WT guy gets frustrated at DCS guys for constantly having to remind WT that it's not even close, even when it's unnecessary. Bottom line is, warthunder air RB is to an IRL CAP/barcap patrol as CSGO is to a tour in Afghanistan, if that analogy helps.

Yep , if launched real high and fast , phoenix can even achieve 110 nautical miles of range. Using this technique I managed to score 3 splashes at 90 nautical miles (against fighters). The f14 was so ahead of its time in terms of capabilities

I am not entirely sure, but I think there is one more element to the Phoenix that you are missing. As you know, you are locking the targets over the board radar, not the missile radar. Only in the last stages of flight, the missile turns on its own radar. However, that means that you need to (passively) keep pinging the enemy. If you don’t, the missile won’t update its course. I think you’d increase the kill rate if you wouldn’t turn away after a launch.

2 ways you can become invisible to the phoenix, firstly you can fly at a right angle sideways from where is coming (called notching) second you can fly away from the missile and it will loose track (going cold) be aware of missile trails and listen to your RWR, gettign pinged repeated by an F-14 will allow it to launch a phoenix, when the phoenix is 18km away from you it will turn on its own radar and fully blast your warnings, at that point your have at least 12 seconds before impact, note that dumping chaff will only help if you are already doing step 1 or 2.

Even with a 90s-ish ESA TWS is only for SA and you fire in STT. They're also missing some nuance on the AIM-54 that they wouldn't have access to that helps explain why the switch to the AIM-120A was a no-brainer. Most of all though just make it 12.3 FFS.

Noooo, TWS is *_not_* only for SA. In that case both RWS and TWS would provide the same SA, so why even design it or make it an option. TWS is incredibly effective for guiding a fox3 into a general area, where at which point it will turn on its own radar (pitbull) and then chase down the target on it's own. Commonly used today (and in the 90s) for the AMRAAM. STT would give adversaries time and knowledge that they are being targeted through RWR. TWS isn't antenna hot onto a receiver, so it won't warn the target until the fox3 starts tracking him itself, at which point, it's pretty much too late. The phoenix, on the other hand, against a number of adversaries, would be exclusively used in TWS, lest you wouldnt be able to engage any more than one in an STT PDSTT or PSTT. Those would be for one target, like a cruise missile or intercepting a bomber, or one lonely fighter (which is not common to find, everyone flies in flights). If you did use an STT, the Phoenix will actually track like a fox 1, requiring a lock from the mother radar. In any case, if the phoenix loses tracking like lost lock or faded TWS contact, it would change to a HOJ (home on jam) mode. I'm not sure why, but I'd guess because a lock would be anticipated to be broken via jamming, which this would counter. But yea TWS is kinda the shit in BvR. Not RWS.

Plly, idk if is modeled but if the target is moving and you lost the lock the Phoenix will go to the last know possition and only activate its own radar 18km close to this last possition, so to be more affective guide it with the radar until the missile gets 5km to the target then notch, if the target is head on and he dont change course or altitude you can break earlier

The Aim 54A doesn't work this way......If you don't support the missile in Tws until it reaches terminal guidance then the missile goes stupid and will fly right by the target. If you are using a STT lock which makes it a fox 1 then you have to support the missile the entire way. Also if you STT a missile every time you launch another missile the one before it goes stupid. The radar in that mode can only support the 1 missile.

Odd setup for these matches. Probably just wanna test the phoenix ofc, but they aren't the best. Also soooo little fuel :p What I've been using is for normal maps I bring 2x aim9H 2xphoenix and 4x aim7f and max fuel. The max fuel I'm not quite sure about, its definitely usefull sometimes. But bringing 45 min or maybe even 35 could be worth it. Full does allow you to basically always afterburn though. In terms of missiles though, this works perfectly. I start by going sideways, preferably notching the enemy spawn location so I won't be locked. Then accelerate to mach 1 and then climb to about 6km. Once there I get to a good map position and find targets for my 2 phoenix. After that I go in for aim7 and gun targets. This works quite well. On ec maps I bring the same but 4 phoenix and 2 aim7f instead. And I dont sideline but go straight in. Also works great and the tws makes it pretty easy to find targets early. Btw, you can use your scroll wheel and put the power from wep 1 tick down to 100% and then go back up 1 tick. This should put you back in wep, but kinda half wep. You will afterburn but use only like half the fuel and have a bit less power. Its enough to keep your speed though and save a bunch of fuel. Can be usefull if you're running low.

Believe me, take it into 11.3 and with the triple 1000mm pen tandem warhead missile, with third gen thermals and great speed, you can delete anything in your way. Hello Phly! i have an unusual request would you be able to make a video about italian top tier and show just how underpowered compared to every other nation it is so Gaijin may actually enact some sort of change. I'm an italian main and over the years since italian ground was added the tree has gotten significantly worse to the point that its 10.7 vehicles are out performed but just about any other vehicle at the same tier. something needs to be done to make italy great again and a small yell like mine wouldn't cause any significant change. but if someone with a platform could talk about the problems and really show that there is a huge problem with Italy, it may make something happen. hell Italy doesn't even have -any- 11.0 vehicles. just 10.7 and under. that alone says something.

I enjoy going min fuel and going max height (around 13 to 15k meters, then launch 6 phoenixes from behind them, it gets around a 60 to 80 success rate, and it’s difficult for enemy phoenixes to reach all the way up there unless they also go high.

I load up 6 phoenixes and 30 minutes of fuel. If I launch them at the right time and I make sure I’m launching at actual enemy Jets instead of ai then I usually end up with 2 free kills at least at the beginning of the match and I can land to rinse and repeat within 4 minutes.

I personally do min fuel and treat it almost like a glider, I go to 12k meters basically above their base and fire them from there. Then I glide back to my base and use the last few min of fuel as a lil speed boost. Hit rate with that is around 60 to 80 percent, assuming I target the right people.

I also play War Thunder with kph. I agree it helps me to understand the metric system since I'm an American and we refuse to conform to it. It definitely makes more sense than our Imperial system.

Wonder how that will even work, beginning of match, every player locks every other player with over the horizon missiles and launches. 1 min into the game everyone explodes from 2 or 3 simultaneous missile impacts. Game over

@@KR-hg8be Well, there could be a map that's more than 100 KM². Perhaps 150? 200? Shouldn't be a problem for planes moving at over mach speed with modern radars. It'll be DCS World but more arcade-y. Modern missiles can fire from BVR, anyway. Can't hide at that range, lol.

How do you counter it ? Well like anything beyond visual , you shoot your missiles , dive down and head back . Same thing you do on most BVR fights in DCS . You rerely see the enemy. I think this is where war thunder is headed , soon dogfights wont be on guns but on BVR .
