I go by damage in descending order, so Sword, axe, pickaxe, shovel, and then the fifth slot is interchangeable between a bow, hoe, and sometimes torches; but I usually put torches in my offhand. For the last slot, I keep food. In fact I keep all food on the right side of my inventory. If I don't do it like that I get easily confused because I have a smooth brain.

Dude that's a feature I've been wanting in the game forever. Though in my mind I always thought it would be similar to middle-click, but a different button that would switch you to the right tool instead. There's no real way to know this stuff without looking on the wiki or through trial and error, and so I still sometimes learn about the more unintuitive "correct tool" to use on certain blocks. I still try to use the pickaxe on the smithing table a lot. For tool arrangements, I usually have my slots lookin like this: 1. Pickaxe 2. Other tool I'm using, usually a shovel ... 6. Fireworks 7. Bow 8. Sword 9. Food Which leaves 3-5 for things I pick up and it is painful to only have three slots to use for that at any given time.

For giant modpacks there's a mod called Morph O' Tool which does this but for wrenches. Because every tech mod has its own type of wrench and it's better than using a third of your inventory for wrenches.

I always keep my main pickaxe in the first slot, followed by the axe and shovel, and then the sword. Some would say you need the sword close to your pick, but the axe makes a perfectly good weapon in plenty of situations too. Also, I had an idea similar to that "Tool" item where you could keep tools in the first column of the inventory and it would automatically swap based on the block you're looking at a long time ago, I really think Mojang should make it happen because it would open up a ton of hotbar space for building blocks

For large modpacks it was Morph O' Tool because every mod has its own type of wrench and it would swap to the Ender IO wrench if you were looking at a Ender IO block, RF Tools wrench if you were looking at an RF tools block, etc.

The water bucket goes in slot nine, with another one directly above it. Food goes in slot seven, and torches in slot eight. Extras go directly above. Crafting table, furnace, any spare wood or sticks, boats, and signs go in the top left of the inventory. Cobble and other temporary building blocks go in the top right.

Left to right I've been using Pick Sword Shovel Axe because I in my young age noticed that I use both picks and shovels in the more dangerous situations and I either scroll up or down depending on which I'm using to use my sword, food goes in the last slots and extra tool like a water bucket goes in the second to last slot, torch in the middle and the rest are free for any blocks to place, it's what I naturally developed and I've stuck with it ever since

When above ground, you are likely using the shovel and axe for landscaping until you start hitting stone, at which point it becomes shovel and pickaxe again. From the left side of the hotbar: Pick -> Sword -> Shovel -> Axe With a silk touch pick sitting above the pickaxe in the inventory, and a hoe next to it, or in the ender chest depending on how much space I need My reasoning for this configuration being that I have it going from most used to least used from left to right, and I have the sword on the 2 key because of it being the easiest to reach number on the top of the keyboard so that I can pull it out as quick as possible for emergencies I used to go with the sword first, until I noticed that in the day to day in minecraft, I always end up using the pickaxe more than the sword Also, the axe replaces the shovel in early game due to it being more useful for fighting mobs one on one, and usually I don't find myself using the shovel too much until late game when I start building a lot more and making more TNT

I use the same arrangement my brother does since he introduced me to minecraft and from the left side of the hotbar it's: Sword -> Axe -> Pick -> Shovel. I don't remember his reasoning for this order (it's probably the same as yours, in order of most used), but I've used it for so long that doing Sword -> Pick seems so wrong to me lol. Specific to me, and the situations, I have bows/crossbows go between the sword and axe, hoe/shears/misc. tool goes in the 5th slot, then water bucket (for emergencies) and if I'm mining/building torches go in the next slot after the bucket. The last ones are usually for food, building blocks, a map, and/or a boat. :)

The most interesting thing I do with my inventory is keep my shield in the slot right underneath the off hand slot (when you open the inventory). Because usually in caves I have torches in my off hand, and if I press E+F+E it swaps shield and torches, because when you open inventory, your mouse cursor is on that slot :) And I go with Sword > Pickaxe > Axe > Shovel > Blocks (usually cobblestone) > Blocks > Random > Random/Food > Food

Sword - Axe - Shovel - Pickaxe I do it thinking from top to bottom. The sword doesn't have a specific level, The axe is for on-surface stuff (Trees/Wood), The shovel you use for the surface itself (Surface as in grass/ground), and pickaxe for below surface stuff. The rest (right after the tools) is a food item, water bucket, blocks, and torches

I used to have it as sword -> pickaxe -> axe -> shovel on the left side but then 1.9 came out. Now my hotbar goes sword -> axe -> pickaxe -> shovel. The reason being axes actually are a viable weapon after 1.9 and its much easier to hit the 1-4 keys than it is to reach my fingers over to the 6-9 keys or use the scroll wheel.

That's a bit like me. I do: Water bucket | Food | Fortune pick, hoe, or bow | Sword | Empty or blocks | Shovel | Torches or rockets | Axe | Silk pick Offhand is a totem. I also like to have an empty slot handy unless I'm specifically using blocks. Since I use hotbar keybinds instead of scrolling there is no functional difference where things are in my hotbar, except that water and blocks are at the easiest keys for self-donkey-saving purposes lol

IKR! It feels so wrong! Yours is still weird to me, though. Picture yourself up on the surface, in the nether, building something, or mining/caving. Your primary tool is the pick, because you can always press 4 to go into "combat mode". What are you most often gonna switch to? Shovel for dirt, gravel, sand, soul sand... Second most likely? Axe, for wood-type stuff. Then torches, food, and blocks off in the "up-scroll" slots and a bow/hoe/bucket in 5 if you have it equipped.

Do it in order of usefulness: Sword is needed for self defense, most important. Pickaxe mines the most important resources, that you can't mine with fists. Axe mines less important resources, which CAN be broken with your fist. Shovel only increases breaking speed, almost everything can just be moved with fists but slower. Therefore, sword pickaxe axe shovel.

Every world I make has a different layout based upon where I ended up putting the tools in my hotbar when I first crafted them, it will then never change until I get a new world (or die and forget the original layout when I retrieve my items). I do bow, sword, pickaxe, torch, waterbucket, blocks, food, and free space. There is no need to have a shovel or a hoe. I keep a hoe in my farming chest when i need to plant. A shovel is a waste of space so it stays in home chest until i need it for mass mining of a specific material. Anything a shovel can mine can also be mined by a fist thats why i see no use for it. Edit: oh yeah, the axe is useless unless i need a lot of wood so its a waste of space because I prefer to play on bedrock edition.
