this is like if they made it so sprint jumping was no longer faster than sprinting. yeah i guess it makes more sense but it's just been that way for so long that it's ingrained in everyone's muscle memory and is kinda iconic at this point, and honestly of all the countless bugs in this game it's not that important comparatively.

tbh i would be 100% ok for parity with bedrock on that, make players as fast as sprint jumping but remove sprint jumping, would make moving arround 100 times better because you can jump when you want instead of getting stuck in corners because you were on the wrong moment or lose speed by stopping to SJ before reaching the corner

Okay but why is nobody (except camman18) talking about the changes to fall damage?? Up to the latest stable version (1.21.4) fall damage starts at 3.35 meters off the ground, so you can comfortably walk off a 3 block tall ledge with a trapdoor on top and not take fall damage. (or in a very uncommon case of 3 snow layers, at 4 snow layers you'll take fall damage) But in the latest snapshot if you have so much as a carpet you take fall damage (a carpet is 0.0625 meter or 6.25cm tall) and after extensive testing i have found that fall damage starts at 3.0000002 (or 3meters and *TWO TENTHS of a MICROMETER* ) off the ground, which seems like a ridiculous arbritrary change even worse than the strafing thing since now you take fall damage if you jump off a 2 block tall ledge, which also MAJORLY affects pvp and parkour since you'll be taking fall damage from a shorter distance

The ironic thing is that if they just GAVE us better movement options, they could also implement more complicated, better bosses. The reason the minecraft bosses are so dull, is because the movement options we have are so dull. The most advanced thing that you can use in practical gameplay is "Elytra bouncing" where you build up momentum by bouncing using an elytra instead of normal walking.

I feel like the fix here is pretty simple tbh, just buff sneaking speed to be the same as everyone always did it (diagonally) then your survival builders, and your speed-bridgers, get the same speed they're used to. people who know to sneak diagonally won't notice a difference, and anyone who hadn't figured it out will get a small boost.

That seems like the sanest thing to do. It doesn't feel right to me for sneaking diagonally to be faster, when walking diagonally isn't, so I was in favor of the change despite the negatives. But your solution is just the best of both worlds, increase straight sneaking speed instead of decreasing diagonal.

They did it in one of the combat test snapshot, so there's chance that this will happen, since this snapshot was made to give combat parity to Java/Bedrock, and they have a history of ignoring player's complaints about changes for parity (like the copper bulb one).

As someone who went from nothing about game dev to developing multiple entire games since Microsoft bought minecraft, I can say that this is really stupid and they should've fixed it YEARS ago if they were going to. Like fixing this is one of the first things you learn in game development, it's kinda baffling that they left it in so long and only chose now to do something about it. Hell, they even added swift sneak and didn't think to look at sneaking speed.

My guess is the minecraft source code is big enough already that its easy to miss a basic logic error like this because people would assume that it was normal. That the shift speed was meant to be that fast when moving diagonally. They only decided to knock it out of the park because its a relatively simple logic error to fix normalizing your movement vectors, but didn't think of the game design ramifications of changing a core tenant of the games movement mechanics and how it feels. My guess. A higher up said to fix it because it was a bug even if the junior or experienced senior fevs knew it wasn't a good idea to fix it like this because of how it would affect the player experience lol

Thank you so much for covering this, Phoenix! For anyone wondering, the 2% speed reduction for walking and sprinting is caused by a 0.98x multiplier that is applied when pressing one direction key. Before the change, it would be multiplied by sqrt(2) when pressing two keys then capped back to 1, hence giving a 2.04% speed increase while moving diagonally. Now that movement is normalized, the sqrt(2) multiplier is no longer applied so it remains at 0.98, reducing the diagonal speed by 2%. The reason this is different for sneaking is because it does not reach the cap when pressing two keys, so you move sqrt(2)x faster. The additional 2% while sprinting helps especially in parkour to get that little extra distance you need to make a jump possible, and overall adds so much depth to the gamemode that it would feel completely different without it. Both being removed are caused by the same bugfix, and both being removed leaves a negative impact on the community. GO VOTE

How would you even implement Java's behaviour on a joystick? The joystick is isotropic and continuous, and Java's motion is discrete and directional, they are just incompatible

Yes, they would complain. Buffing sneak speed by 41% is a HUGE change, and not a positive one. Not only that sneaking will be "buffed", eating, using a shield, cobweb, slowness will also be changed. Imagine the pvp communities' anger on increasing web speed. Imagine how much jumps would be messed up in the parkour community. Imagine how much players are used to the normal sneaking speed that they move uncontrollably when sneaking. Not only that, what will happen to swift sneak? What will happen to soul speed? What would happen to the game that would fundamentally change how the game is ran and how the interactions will be? Don't be ignorant about a "sneak speed buff" and act like a mmo player in a sandbox game. Changing a game's code is much buggier, much more difficult than you think. Your swiftly typed sentence might cause a whole team of people hours to change. Instead of asking randomly for a speed buff, actually think about how to game would change.

As an older dude who loves Quake, the movement was one of the things that drew me to Minecraft and helped me see past the ''kiddie'' style and really appreciate it, plus it just feels right, if anything they could make it a little faster and it would be great. But of course they want to reduce skill ceiling or something like they do in other games to get a wider audience engaged and feeling ''equal''.

Oversight that should have been fixed from the start, it's wild they forgot to implement "diagonal movement 101" for this long. I guess because it was only while slowed down, but still you would have thought they'd find and fix this long before it would become an issue to have it removed. At this point, they could do a middleground. Have speed reductions toned down, so diagonal movement is no longer faster, but still the same speed as players are used to. It would be a slight buff overall to sneaking/eating speed, but the pros outweigh the cons here.

It's actually incredibly weird it took them so long to fix crouch walking diagonally... They changed diagonal walk speedy in beta... Way before sprinting it was the fastest way to move because notch programmed it 1+1 on both axis no nerfing math at all.

modern pvp is better (imo) and more complex it has a higher skill ceiling than 1.8 and is super fun the only reason people don't like it is because it's different and they believe that you can't combo people but that's not even close to true the newer versions are worse for minigames but for straight up pvp they're great although if they changed it again i would be upset so i can see where people are coming from

honest to god i think the speedbriding nerf was an unintended consequence. it's a pretty normal game dev instinct to see a glaring oversight like forgetting to normalize speed and to fix it simply so that player movement makes more, like, physical sense. there's no reason nor evidence that they made this change as a purposeful nerf to anything. obviously the best move now would be to acknowledge their mistake and revert, but i'm curious; why can't you just change the rhythm of your speedbridging to accommodate the change? this video seems to imply that speedbridging is somehow, like, fundamentally broken rather than just having a different ratio of crouch to walk time.

@ There's a mod that does do creeper variants in a cool and unique way, but it doesn't fit the vanilla aesthetic. This is also a one line fix. Devs just added a 'movement.normalize()' method (I don't know the exact code but that should be close) line that "fixes" this behavior. Removing that line will also "revert" this behavior

Personally, I think they implemented this fix mainly due to it being a common bug in many games, not really to nerf speed bridging. With the old speed, sneaking diagonally was 2.4x slower than walking diagonally, which was ofc way faster than the intended 3.33x multiplier. With the new changes, the ratio is now correctly applied, and like you said, it was a 41% reduction in speed, the same different between sqrt(1) and 1. Since people was used to the bug, it makes sense they would be mad since it accidentally increased the skill cieling of the game. I like what another commenter suggested, which was to change the ratio to become the old diagonal ratio, applying it to all directions of sneaking and not just diagonally. That way the bug would be fixed and it would make people happy. Hopefully if they do change it, they implement this solution. But yeah, the fix should have been made, just with a different solution.

i kind of like it because I really do not like it when diagonal walking is optimal in games, but i also dislike it because if you just hit all the player self slowed types of walking at once at least try to make up for it feeling that much slower by like, letting people sprint crouch again or making starting crouching slow you down extra but also change the default crouching speed to the 40% faster speed people like across the board. like people like their current movement mechanics, you have to make the pill easier to swallow. hope they don't revert it honestly but i also hope they fill the void it leaves back with something

if the standard is 1 unit and your speed increase is 141% or 1,41 and they reduce the increase by 41% then its a reduction of 41%. You compare it to the normal speed value and not the buffed value

Nerfs like this aren't a good solution but I'd like to point out that bedrock has been suffering from "bad parity" like this for YEARS, so let's not pretend that this is some revolutionary new issue. Ultimately though, Mojang needs to bring together the best features of both bedrock and java, even if it means accepting bugs as features. While we have seen a shift towards good parity, such as with baby squids and salmon sizes coming over to java, it does seem like the shift is primarily bedrock to java and not the other way around. Could just be confirmation bias though. There's also a point to be made about how the parity effort seems very caught up in the little bugs rather than the big features, such as the offhand or potion cauldrons or tridents. A moment of silence for horses in boats, shattered savanna grass, maps that actually tell you where you are, and all the other victims of bad parity. Let's hope that this doesn't join them.

Who thought this was a good idea, sneaking is already painfully slow and they decide the faster way needs to be slower???

Seems to me like so many players can't stand even the tiniest instances of the game saying "No, this game is built to have SOME limits, so as to avoid so much sheer player power that all of it becomes meaningless." Like nobody wants to actually be invested feels like, so impatient everyone. Arrow to temple, you are tasked with making A Desireable Action/Process Being Slow a Non-Negotiable and Innately Valuable part of MC, how do you keep your grey matter from being fine pink mist?

@@youtubeuniversity3638 I'm a player who cares about the game and it's future. This "fix" changes the fundamentals of movement, it's not a new mechanic, it's something that's been in the game for years, something people have gotten used to. This diagonal movement is very useful for building, and I'm a player who likes to build, a lot. To me this is the opposite of a quality of life change to me. It makes it more tedious, and nobody wants their favorite game to suddenly be 44% more tedious. Bedrock has no-shift bridging, Java doesn't, so diagonal movement is something people rely on. I'm fine with limitations if they make the game more interesting, what's interesting about this!?

They also removed sprint sneaking, which is when you start sneaking while sprinting for the sneak to the a bit faster

So, an update has been released that will prevent players from doing parkour, which isn't the focus of the game whatsoever? The only consequences I see, as a result of this update, are minor issues that will ultimately only affect sweats.

You seriously going to make fun of people who are just enjoying challenging parkour? A company decides to fix a an non-issue that hardly changes normal gameplay at all, but punishes many people for technical play, how does this at all seem fair? Mojang should at least make it a toggleable option so people can choose to have this feature, if they decide to go against the wishes of these players.

something else they did that nobody seemed to notice, whenever you deploy elytra your sprint is reset. it never used to be like that, but now you cant elytra sprint. i play a lot of survival minecraft, and this change made it way clunkier to wear elytra in general

So Mojang is fine adding “parity” by making speed-bridging the same speed as on bedrock, but people playing bedrock don’t even speed bridge like players in Java because they can just place blocks in front of themselves. Makes sense.

My main gripe w/ a change like this is how much its going to effect general gameplay. Once they make your movement slower, everything becomes slower too (Building, Exploring, And traveling long distances).
