@_padfoot3 жыл бұрын
@@simonwilliams8528 1) Why do we give "Cobain or other musicians" the benefit of the doubt that it was "genuine"?? Smashing a guitar is a well-tread rock star gimmick, and to believe that a musician is just spontaneously inspired to do this is probably a stretch. So the question of authenticity I think has more to do with our own beliefs in what an "authentic" rock star seems like than it does that musician's inner thought process. This is why gender comes into the picture for someone like Phoebe Bridgers who is constantly poking fun at the centrality of maleness in rock music. 2) For anyone familiar with Phoebe Bridgers, "ironic" and "silly" and "contrived" gestures are all central to her persona as an artist, and to some extent, even her songwriting. She is plays with rock music archetypes and cliches, to the point of being in an all-women band called "Boygenius" and creating merch full of heavy metal imagery. Which is why a lot of fans are rolling their eyes at people being sincerely upset about this stunt -- it sort of underscored the implied joke, that certain musicians and music fans have no sense of humor or absurdity when it came to their traditional musical heroes, and the fact that a woman was performing this ritual just made its absurdity apparent for the first time.
@_padfoot3 жыл бұрын
@@simonwilliams8528 I mean, I'm not assuming anything particular about you personally, and when I refer to people "sincerely upset", I am thinking more of boomer Eric Clapton fans than someone on KZbin. I disagree strongly with the idea that "maleness isn't central to music at all" -- with the correction that I am talking about rock music in particular, which is where this guitar-smashing archetypes is drawing from. You're right that women are "currently" at the fore of a lot of music across all genres, but a simple Wikipedia search of the best selling acts of all time are stacked with male rock acts and female artists who are more generally thought of as pop stars (Madonna, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, versus The Beatles, Queen, AC/DC, Eagles, Rolling Stones, etc.).

i still don't get why people got so mad at her smashing the guitar as if people haven't been doing it since forever
@Mutantcy19923 жыл бұрын
Because it came from a time when smashing the guitar was a statement, but nowadays people just do it for shock and attention.
@rebe61323 жыл бұрын
lmfao it was a tribute to an Elliot Smith performance and even if it wasn't can you please tell me whats that supposed statement that people made back then that Phoebe can't do now???'

@@rebe6132 watch some videos of the who and maybe it'll be clear. there is a sense of it being unearned here.

@@Mutantcy1992 hahshsh i've seen plenty and i still can't see your point. is it because she's a woman? is that it? are you misogynistic??

Somewhere in Germany, but I can't place it Man, I hate this part of Texas Close my eyes, fantasize Three clicks and I'm home When I get back I'll lay around Then I'll get up and lay back down Romanticize a quiet life There's no place like my room But you had to go I know, I know, I know Like a wave that crashed and melted on the shore Not even the burnouts are out here anymore And you had to go I know, I know, I know Out in the park, we watch the sunset Talking on a rusty swing set After a while you went quiet and I got mean I'm always pushing you away from me But you come back with gravity And when I call, you come home A bird in your teeth So I gotta go I know, I know, I know When the sirens sound, you'll hide under the floor But I'm not gonna go down with my hometown in a tornado I'm gonna chase it I know, I know, I know I gotta go now I know, I know, I know Driving out into the sun Let the ultraviolet cover me up Went looking for a creation myth Ended up with a pair of cracked lips Windows down, scream along To some America First rap, country song A slaughterhouse, an outlet mall Slot machines, fear of God Windows down, heater on Big bolts of lightning hanging low Over the coast, everyone's convinced It's a government drone or an alien spaceship Either way, we're not alone I'll find a new place to be from A haunted house with a picket fence To float around and ghost my friends No, I'm not afraid to disappear The billboard said, "The end is near" I turned around, there was nothing there Yeah, I guess the end is here The end is here The end is here The end is here The end is here

The only reason to be mad about someone smashing a guitar is if they don't do it properly but honestly she really went for it. 11/10 will watch again

The only reason to be mad about someone smashing a guitar is if it's unearned. There is no way to smash a guitar improperly if it is earned and genuine.

She went for it.......with timid reservation and pyrotechnics. Song was dope tho.
