Yes, the swimming pool scene. I was in my late teens for Fast Times and I had the predictable reaction to it. The cars were already one of my favorite bands, and the combination of her obvious beauty, the song, and the surreal direction coalesced into a dreamlike quality that I can recall these many years later. But I’ve seen that movie since, and as an adult it took on a new quality. Some very heavy issues were addressed in that film, to the point of discomfort. It truly was a landmark movie, and has stood the test of time not because of a poolside topless fantasy but rather exceptional writing, a killer cast, and expert direction. And throughout, Phoebe Cates was absolutely wonderful. A gifted actress that made “one of the ten most beautiful women in the country” seem like the girl next door. She gave the character an odd yet approachable combination of beauty and awkwardness, confidence and insecurity. I understand it, but I wrestle with seeing such a wonderful performance reduced to a single, albeit legendary scene. Ms. Cates, thanks for the wonderful and yes, unforgettable performance.

Phobe Cates is half Filipino like me and why I idolized her. She represented well and intelligent and gorgeous. She got out of the business when she married and had kids with Kevin Klein ,ran her own boutique,an accomplished business woman in Nycity..she made the transition to accomplished mature woman. Acting was just one of many. Shes still one of my tavorites from the 80s..

I estimate that she's had literally millions of 'husbands'. I count myself in that mass of humanity. But, it turns out that Kevin Kline is the only one who can really make that claim. Lucky bastard.

I love that she wasn't a Beauty in the classic sense, which is to say the typical features of a Hollywood beauty. She really had her own look and features, almost Polynesian but not quite. Anyway, she had a unique beauty and I do mean stunningly gorgeous.

I am not sure about Polynesian but yes, she is an exotic beauty. Perfect blend of Asian and Caucasian

The 80's was the last of that Hollywood accent, the slight southern tone without the long drawl. It had such an innocence to it and the women were the ones who had it. Beautiful women like Phoebe made it even more gorgeous. My first love had that dark brown hair and sweet smile. She looked a lot like Phoebe. I will always love that look.

Phoebe is the most beautiful, gorgeous & adorable woman that has ever existed. Some women are 1 or 2 of those, Phoebe is all 3. She's a rare beauty with strikingly gorgeous features, and an easy going down to earth charming personality that is painfully adorable & enduring. I've had a crush on her since I first saw her in the Gremlins when I was 5 in 1986.

I was stationed at Clark AB Philippines when she visited Manila and was on the radio. She spoke mostly English with a Tagalog word here and there. I did not know she was half Chinese/Pinay from her mother until then. In case you missed it, yes she speaks Tagalog. She was very charming to the locals while there. Class act.

"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" has aged unbelievably well. It feels better now than when it came out. It indeed is a genuinely fine film. Amy Heckerling is the most underrated American filmmaker of her generation.

Phoebe was also a big hit in the Philippines.. it is a shame she did not make a movie there.. but we definitely claimed her there..Posters everywhere! lol.. Man, her beautiful eyes just shine! This is a cool interview because we get to see her natural side and personality.. very charming, smart and confident. She was also well cast in Private School.. but few knew she also graduated from Julliard.. But in the 80s, she was definitely my beauty standard and ideal.. but I would say, Alyssa Milano had a similar appeal.. who edified my attraction to beautiful big brown eyed, brunettes.. they are living Disney Princesses yet amazing young women..hmmm she babysat for Kate Capshaw.. no wonder she was in the company of Speilberg with Gremlins.. That list didnt fit her as much except maybe Christy.. but she is comparable to Brooke Shields who is like her Blue Lagoon contemporary. and Jennifer Jason Leigh was cute in that movie and an excellent actress.. there is also Lynda Carter, Winona Ryder and Kelly Preston from the 80s.. I am surprised Phoebe didn't do more movies any of that cast or that Sean Penn didn't date her.. lol.. Letterman tries to be as classy as he is crass at times but he pulls it off.. but maybe that's how we got Conan and Craig styles for talk shows! Nwy, this interview is the real "Date with an Angel".. I don't think I noticed Emmanuelle Beart until Mission Impossible.. Thanks Phoebe for being so poised and sweet.. As Bruce says, stars are like an illusion.. but I am glad she got to be in some of my favorite Hollywood movies of the 80s. and lives on on KZbin! lol.. Represent! ✊😎
