Phoenix Resale Did Not Sell $3 Million in Video Games

Today, I discuss Phoenix Resale's recent video where he claims to have sold $3 million in video games.

Here's my thing with Phoenix Resale. I'm not a huge resale hater as long as people do business respectfully and honestly. I see it as a way to make a living and if it works for someone, great. There's just something about Phoenix Resale that sends up red flags. He seems like a fraud. He knows deep down that the resale side of his "business" isn't worth shit because he has nothing proprietary. That's why he's trying to make this app. He's literally just a middleman between people he buys from and Amazon. He doesn't produce something unique, he didn't invent anything. If this dude went on to Shark Tank saying his business made $1.1M in 2023 and he's asking for a valuation of $3M for example, he'd be laughed out of the room because anyone can do his business if they can find the inventory. No one would buy his business because his business has no true worth for anyone other than himself. Touting big revenue numbers doesn't mean anything in this type of business. His margins are horrible at 15%. His margins are so bad because he's just a middleman skimming off the top but likes to puff out his chest like he's some business mogul. He makes me cringe and lmfao when he talks like he's some CEO of a massive successful company. He loves using big business buzz words and talks about his "process" and "efficiency." He quotes people like Jeff Bezos and probably watches Ted Talks on business and takes notes. I mean, bro, you buy old video games from one source and send it to Amazon. Get over yourself lmao. He's riding a wave right now and good on him for getting money out of it because from what he's said he'd be a jobless loser otherwise. His biggest success is the youtube channel not the resale business. Good on him for getting the following because he can milk them in perpetuity as long as video games are popular. He's sitting pretty but a lot of it is because he caught lightning in a bottle. His situation would be difficult to replicate. Where I live there is hardly any secondary market for video games so for starting out you'd be screwed. He seems to be in an area with tons of video game stores, pawn shops, etc. He started filming like every person does now and he caught on in the algorithm. Lots of luck involved and he loves to pretend like he just has the magic sauce.

This is 100% correct. And it’s exactly why he’s pivoting to be seen a general business guru type instead of focusing on video games. That’s what all his videos are about now. He knows that he got lucky with the price of video games exploding. He knows as the prices come down he’s eventually going to be squeezed out because unlike someone like Retro Rick who can grind it out as a retro novelty/collectible store owner, Caleb is just a flipper. His app is going to tank and I’m 100% sure he’s going to be selling a course within the next 12 months.

I live in Kentucky about an hour from the dude and I had a lot of older game stuff so I reached out to him on Facebook through one his posts where he was looking to trade a switch for retro games and as a reseller myself I had a number in mind of what I would take fully understanding dude needs to make a profit and had 1.2k in resale value I was gonna be happy with a switch and $100-200 dude comes in hot with some super ridiculous offer and only wanting to cherry pick. Needless to say we didn’t deal and I took a few days to go through and get it listed on eBay.

I read somewhere the average Gamestop does 500-600k revenue in a year, with top stores making north of 1m. Say his average sale price is $50 - that is 60,000 games you need to sell. 60,000 games is approximately 1000 home depot boxes full (aka a warehouse full) Then you see what he posts he struggles to ever have more than couple hundred games at a time. He would need to be working non stop with several employees constantly processing inventory to even come close to those numbers. Fraud

What would be the point in buying anything from a reseller? All they do is buy then sell. They don't refurbish the hardware, they don't inspect it, clean it, replace bad parts. They don't offer a return policy, or any gurantee. They just buy from someone and post it on Amazon at a larger markup and do not offer anything different than the place it was scalped from.

I don’t mind the concept of reselling when you’re doing a yard sale to get rid of old gaming stuff, or selling an individual game of your collection to get a new one. But people, like Phoenix Resale, really annoy me when he goes to record buying stuff in other peoples property without their permission. Lies about saying he’s a gamer. I'm building an online store to sell retro video games. I've been retired for over 3 years and during covid I fell in love with the retro game community. I'm building this business to leave something to my kids, something that we do together as a family. I'm looking to build something I can hand off to my boys when they come of age. I understand the hustle involved with getting games for dirt cheap and selling them at market value. However, you have to be adding value in order to sell above market value in my opinion. I can't see myself selling a game 25%+ above market value if I haven't added any additional value to the product. This comes off as greedy and money hungry when you're taking advantage of your customers who are not privy to the value of the games in the secondary market. I don't want to knock phoenix resale but I just don't feel he's genuine when it comes to having a passion for retro video games. What is he bringing back to the retro community? What value is he adding to the actual gamers who love retro video games?

I'll admit, I started watching Phoenix Resale a couple of years ago as I enjoyed watching what he would find in certain stores, pawn shops, conventions etc just to see what would pop up because I love games and seeing what really cool ones are out in the wild and also, being in Ireland we don't have a massive amount of retro games from years gone by as if any show up they are gone instantly so seeing Caleb's stuff was cool but over the last while I've noticed his crappy attitude and tactics that he uses and has become way more unlikable. I guess I've just finally realised what he is actually like and also, I took one look at is second channel and he touts being a gamer and all that when over on that second channel here is is just dropping games on the floor and moving them like he doesn't give a damn and also just tossing games and consoles into that bloody IKEA bag all just rattling around in there when he complains about quality. The eejit is wrecking his own product. With that I realised he actually doesn't give a flying fuck about games and it's 100% a business to him. Thanks for the great content, my man. I know a lot about various resellers and some of the bigger game businesses since I do reasonably large online game sales, and a lot of wholesale to the big SEO dogs out there _(except DKOldies - never ever deal with them is all you need to know.)_ From 30 years experience in the video game business the main things that concern me are: -Selling any item full time and not actually enjoying it/playing and being primarily focused on the money it makes first is always a large concern for me long term regardless of what you're selling. Those entrepreneurs who are in it just for the monetary gain will always be at a permanent disadvantage to those who are fully invested and passionate with what they are dealing in. -80%+ operating costs is pretty insane. Why is that so dangerous? If the needle moves even a bit and that margin drys up at all, you're going under immediately unless you can shift like the sands to something that will prop you back up. You're going to have other issues from this like hiring actual employees. _I would see operating costs at 50%-60% to be reasonably high._ -Not hiring employees and not focused on expansion? What? Don't get me wrong - they are costly especially with how minimum wage laws work against small businesses trying to enter the market, but you are going to need employees to _increase your margins_ and use your time more effectively. You can only optimize so far, and you're going to need to hire at some point. -Amazon _used_ to be better than Ebay for games, but nowadays that has switched so I'm surprised he's still only on Amazon especially with how impressive Ebay promoted listings, and variation listings are(See SosaGames for example.) You could still use either platform or even your own website. You're own website will be tough due to how tough the fight over SEO will be. Also some SEO online sellers like RetroVGames has almost no actual stock and just drop ships all their inventory from other sellers. -A lot of money was made off of the Whatnot boom which has died down (me included), but I already knew going in it wasn't going to last as their would be too much competition and the burnout of selling the same video games every week to basically the same crowd won't last. Stuff on Whatnot goes for like 50%-70% and it's almost all resellers buying to flip on Ebay/Amazon, lol. Whatnot also paid him and others to use the service. How much I don't know, but they made me an offer as well so I know I wasn't alone. I believe RetroRick probably got the biggest offer since he had one of the largest most general audiences. _What they won't tell you though is most of the stuff he sold on his Whatnot streams for 3x to 5x market price got refunded after the fact._ People just got caught up in the moment and it made Whatnot look amazing so they just rolled with it. -While I don't know much about how profitable KZbin is, I'm sure being a decent sized KZbinr overall _takes away_ from being able to optimize and run your actual business. I know if I did KZbin it'd immediately have a detrimental effect on my business. I'm sure there are benefits to being well known, but I can't imagine that would overcome the daily cost of time. (Without hiring people to do KZbin or run the store so you could find that time.) -I consider the real top dogs in the video game selling world to be some private individuals who run stuff behind the scenes with multiple other businesses usually, or SOSA Games, and the SEO dogs(LukieGames, DKolides, OSGV, RetroVGames, etc.) Although again never ever deal with DKoldies or you'll find out the hard way why I'm saying that, lol. I'm sure Phoenix Resale does fine enough, this is just my 2 cents.| I'll leave you all with this: The main issue I see with game stores is they are either run out of genuine passion for video games and the owner doesn't optimize their business very well due to enjoying the lifestyle first, or you get the inverse where they don't care as much about the video games and they fail to fully understand or enjoy what they are actually selling so they land up not doing as good as a job and being kind of jaded/burned out. You really have to marry the passion plus the drive, and be willing to constantly optimize on both sides to maximize doing well in this space.
