There's nothing embarrassing about this. Her sharing her story allows others to either become aware or just make others privy to how folk are moving these days. You should be thankful that she's not that embarrased or she would have never shared what most can now avoid. A few months ago I just happened to click on a video that had a former scammed talking about his scam and how he (with whatever group he was running with) stole hundreds of thousands from others. Soley by him taking peoples phone and pretending to put his number in. Meanwhile, he was locking them out of their phone and emptying their bank accounts. I swear 2 weeks later, I was at work and I gave my work phone to a brain dead employee to log into a work related website, as I was training and didn't have access with my own log in. I literally stepped out the vehicle for a minute and walked around to the passenger side that she was sitting on and within that time frame this 🤡 put some kind of phishing bs on my phone. I only noticed it because that wasn't my primary phone so there was no need for me to be getting all the notifications that were popping up on my phone. I immediately changed my number and refused to interact with her moving forward. Although I reported it to the supervisor, he acted like, I don't know. Two weeks it was on my phone. One day I came into work and decided to call the carrier while waiting to clock in. The room I was in just happened to have a camera that could see and hear everything that I was saying. Do you know that after I finished talking to tech support, whatever phishing that was on my phone disappeared. Not one pop up or notification was seen or heard .....and prior to that 10 -15 notifications would bombard my phone at once.

By getting the actual card, they could fully authenticate and then move money. She stated within minutes of giving away her card, they accessed her accounts and withdrew money. They are deep into her personal information. She should change all her accounts, put a credit freeze on her name, pull frequent credit reports, and notify Social Security to prevent someone applying for benefits under her name.

The hackers targeted her bank. They happened to find her account and saw they could get in. This can happen to anyone.
@eb70275 ай бұрын
No the hackers Targeted her. The scammers social engineered her to give them all the information. All they needed as a last part was the 3 digit code on the card and the chip. Then they could use the card anywhere. He big mistake was taking a random phone call and trusting caller ID( that has been spoofed 20 years ago). The rule of the Internet is never click on a link in an email. Never pickup a call and give out information. You have an issue go to your bank or call the bank directly from the number on your card.

If I get a call or text from what appears to be my bank, I don't answer the call or respond to the text. I get in my car, drive to my bank, walk in and ask them if it was them or not. 4 times in the past 12 years, it turned out to be a scam attempt.

It is what it is. The caption says "thousands of dollars gone after handing over credit card to a scammer." This person is a total stranger walking up to her door and gets her credit card just by asking for it. Stop being an apologist for not following common sense 101.

The news story wasn't super clear- but it appears the scammers got into her account first somehow and managed to take out ~$9k Then they called her in a ruse to get her physical bank card, but when she realized she was locked out, she called the bank to freeze her account. So it appears she stopped any more theft from occurring, but how they initially hacked her account wasn't explained.

Too many people bank at banks that are online, and not a bricks and sticks locally. I am old school, and want my bank within 15 minutes of my home, and one that I can call. I feel the same way about products. If I can buy them locally, I can usually take them back to the store if I don't want it. Especially the bigger items. We are too fast at laughing at people who get scammed, thinking they should have known better, but they don't sit around watching scammer videos on YT like a lot of us do. They are older, busy caring for a loved one, working, tied up with family affairs, traveling, etc. and are caught off balance. This is a new scam, so I can see why she didn't realize what was going on.
