I first heard Little Brother in 2003 when they dropped their album “ The Listening “ and was a fan ever since ! When you have 9th Wonder and Nicolay producing albums for you and Big Pooh and your right hand , you can’t go wrong ! Phonte has to be one of the most underrated rappers in today’s day. His flow and vocabulary is sick... one of my favorite rappers of all time for sure ! Great video once again fellas ! You guys are the best !
@briand1972bd6 жыл бұрын
So what you have here is an Artist who refuses to sacrifice the integrity of his art for fame and fortune. He would rather keep grinding and stay true to himself and his art. I respect the man to no end for that alone! There are artists like that in every genre, their music may not be to my taste, but they have my respect. In Country music, Alan Jackson was one of those who stayed true and had to grind for may years before he was finally recognized as a living legend and finally claimed the fame and fortune that he worked hard to deserve, so it might wind up being the same way for Phonte... Hopefully.

I'm an old white guy, who has never really understood or listened to rap music. I've been watching your videos for a few months now, and although I'll probably not go buy a rap record, i think I'm getting a new appreciation, due mainly how you explain they lyrics. Thanks for your channel, and keep up the videos.

mark copeland Thats dope that your open minded enough to check out a diff genre. Some suggestions i would make are Phonte, Little Brother, Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, NaS, Kendrick Lamar, Joe Budden and Freddie Gibbs
@helixdork6 жыл бұрын
Afro Shinobi thanks for the suggestions, I'll look them up sometime. I did see one rap group in concert once, public enemy, they opened for anthrax, it was interesting but really good
@KeeganRobbins6 жыл бұрын
mark copeland Something that I explored musically that helped me gain a lot more appreciation for rap was to listen to some of the precursors - R&B and Funk. Gave me more history for where rap evolved from. Check out Parliament's album Mothership Connection and literally anything from Gil Scott Heron. That man was a damn poet.
@helixdork6 жыл бұрын
Keegan R. Thanks for the tip, I'll definately check it out. I think parliment is that George Clinton guy, I think that was his name, I'll have to spend sometime listening to your suggestions.

Little Brother - The offspring of ATCQ, De La Soul, Pete Rock, J-Dilla. They are my 3rd favorite group behind Outkast and ATCQ. As for Phonte...his years of catalog is incredibly laced with bars. Oh, he's also a top notch singer for those that don't know, check him out with Foreign Exchange.

Gentlemen, had to hit you both in the comments section. 100%✓ agree with your comments and rap passion about Phonte as a good rapper and the fact the he gave birth to some 90' rappers styles that no so original. To even begin to understand and appreciate the range of such a sick flow, you would had to have lived during that period or had an older brother or sister that was underground in hiphop. He has been an underground and legit lyrical rapper since time. I'm Hugh Masakela meets Mast Killa - just taking that there, I was like smiling and shaking my head in salute because I understood the size and weight of this one line. Watch Out! Thanks for posting

tigallo is his aka name i believe…and…not only is he an elite mc…he's also an amazing singer…he released a project late last year with vocalist eric roberson entitled "Tigallerro" (the title is both phonte and erics aka names combined…erics aka is erro)…project is just a smooth rnb/rap project that has good replay value…his first solo project "charity starts at home" is highly underrated imo…also he's done film work as he ghost wrote for the characters in the movie "The Breaks"…oh and since you mentioned how drake found little brother as inspiration…they actually have a track called "Don't You Have A Man" on drakes first mixtape "Comeback Season"…worth a listen…keep up the great reviews… ps: what i like on top of yall reaction and review…is that yall get and appreciate great writing and technique…respect for acknowledging Phontes patterns…which a lot of ppl can't comprehend haha

Appreciate y'all so often showing some love to artists who might be flying under a lot of people's radars. Speaking of those type of artists, I would really, really like to see a reaction to : Astronautalis - "The River, the Woods" - an "indie" rapper whose poetic style, particularly on this song, I really like Infectious Grooves - "Violent and Funky" - funk-metal with a BADASS bassline Caligula's Horse - "Rust" - an accessible, if not outright catchy, prog-metal track that I think the LIV guys will dig, especially the "heavy" part
