So what you have here is an Artist who refuses to sacrifice the integrity of his art for fame and fortune. He would rather keep grinding and stay true to himself and his art. I respect the man to no end for that alone! There are artists like that in every genre, their music may not be to my taste, but they have my respect. In Country music, Alan Jackson was one of those who stayed true and had to grind for may years before he was finally recognized as a living legend and finally claimed the fame and fortune that he worked hard to deserve, so it might wind up being the same way for Phonte... Hopefully.

I first heard Little Brother in 2003 when they dropped their album “ The Listening “ and was a fan ever since ! When you have 9th Wonder and Nicolay producing albums for you and Big Pooh and your right hand , you can’t go wrong ! Phonte has to be one of the most underrated rappers in today’s day. His flow and vocabulary is sick... one of my favorite rappers of all time for sure ! Great video once again fellas ! You guys are the best !

I'm an old white guy, who has never really understood or listened to rap music. I've been watching your videos for a few months now, and although I'll probably not go buy a rap record, i think I'm getting a new appreciation, due mainly how you explain they lyrics. Thanks for your channel, and keep up the videos.

mark copeland Something that I explored musically that helped me gain a lot more appreciation for rap was to listen to some of the precursors - R&B and Funk. Gave me more history for where rap evolved from. Check out Parliament's album Mothership Connection and literally anything from Gil Scott Heron. That man was a damn poet.

Really good Rap is like poetry. Unfortunately I'm terrible at understanding poetry. I can hear the skill and I understand the complexity. This was really good, but it was a lot better with you guys explaining the meaning. Just learning that "bars" was lyrics helped a lot. Lots of respect for you guys.
@pietrayday9915
@pietrayday9915 6 жыл бұрын
I can sympathize, FDGRonin - I think that's one of the difficulties I have in getting much out of rap music: I have no problem appreciating music, but I struggle with the poetry, and when I listen to metal, neofolk, punk, ska, deathrock, rockabilly, psychedelica, etc., I'm listening to the music first, and maybe visuals like the cover art second, and the poetry ultimately is something I get to last, on the rare occasion I end up curious about what the singer is screaming/yelling/whispering/mumbling/wailing about this time. (I think it explains to me what people mean when they almost always frown, look confused, and ask me how I understand what the singers in the music I listen to are saying, whether because of the distortion, singing style, or language: what the vocalists are saying is usually not a big concern to me when I first hear a song, or even through the first several listens, and what they are saying can sometimes even be a distraction from the music....)

Gentlemen, had to hit you both in the comments section. 100%✓ agree with your comments and rap passion about Phonte as a good rapper and the fact the he gave birth to some 90' rappers styles that no so original. To even begin to understand and appreciate the range of such a sick flow, you would had to have lived during that period or had an older brother or sister that was underground in hiphop. He has been an underground and legit lyrical rapper since time. I'm Hugh Masakela meets Mast Killa - just taking that there, I was like smiling and shaking my head in salute because I understood the size and weight of this one line. Watch Out! Thanks for posting

I appreciate you making vids like this; with metal, so many times, fans love to share this or that underground band, and if so-and-so is underrated, unheard of, whatever, metalheads are likely to share them like crazy, not just keep to the big, mainstream stuff. Finding new and possibly unheard of bands is like... a fun past time and shit. From my experience, metalheads often actively pursue the underground scenes and share the good shit they find with others who'll like it, too. The elitists take it too far when they act like they're allergic to mainstream shit, but the overall understanding I've known is don't shit on the underground, because good stuff brews and grows in there. I assumed the same shit happens in the hip hop world, but if it doesn't, or not to the degree that it does [or appears to] with metal folks, then it's really awesome of you guys to work on changing that. \m/ I also really like when you break down the lyrics so viewers [like me] can get a better grasp of the skill level involved in the writing and wordplay and shit.
