Күн бұрын

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Rhythm Roulette fans. While most of y’all don’t deserve shit the way you’ve been wilding in the comments sections this past year, we decided to let it slide and gift you with a new episode featuring the North Carolina legend 9th Wonder.
After linking up at The Record Krate in Raleigh, we joined 9th back at his studio to watch the master at work. With Charly McClain, Jermaine Jackson, and The Temprees at his disposal, the GRAMMY award-winning producer warmed up with a few quick flips before ultimately chopping up Lovemen. The final result was so crazy, Rapsody immediately hopped in the booth to bless it with a proper verse.

This is still the best RR, IMO. I’ve probably watched this episode 10x, and it’s still mind blowing. The speed and accuracy in which 9th Wonder finds the sample, chops it, and assigns it to his Maschine is pure insanity. I use an MPC, and pull/chop samples on that, my Digitakt, or if I’m just quickly messing around, my OP-1, and people who aren’t familiar with samples/beats have no idea how difficult it is to do. I’ve heard way too many people who don’t listen to hip-hop or any electronic music say that it “doesn’t take any talent , it’s just pushing buttons”. I’ve been playing guitar for close to 30 years now, and also fuck with synths/beats/samples, and making beats out of samples, or making songs that are remotely decent using samples, chopping them, matching beats... all before taking any D.A.W./production aspects into account, it’s extremely difficult, and as challenging as learning any other instrument from scratch. It takes insane talent to be able to do what 9th Wonder, and other producers/beat makers do. Nothing but respect for the craft.
@disanimandan2875
@disanimandan2875 4 жыл бұрын
Great comment! It’s crazy how much knowledge of how music works that goes into what 9th wonder did so easily here. Thinking of Dilla or similar artists, you need to have knowledge on damn near every facet of music to be decent. Much much respect for these artists

Havoc made a greater job with what he had (average records). 9th had only great records to deal with, I mean it almost feels like he didn't go blindfolded as there were only the usual soul songs he makes anyway. Much easier to make a great beat than having the whack stuff Marco Polo had...
@IsaiP
@IsaiP 4 жыл бұрын
I sample with FL Studio, it’s pretty easy to do. Finding samples has also become really easy for me since I listen to a lot of funk and soul in my free time. I have tried sampling with machines like that but they were more for electronic music where you put the samples from your computer into them. Sampling is always fun to do and impressive when you find that one sample that makes you sound like Madlib a bit. Hey, man respect for using old school samplers.

sampling isn't stealing, it's taking the soul from a sound and making your own.
@sanchezboy8654
@sanchezboy8654 Жыл бұрын
Fun fact: Sampling was actually considered stealing in the 90s and people at that time were not ready to accept the fact that it’s taking the soul from a sound and making your own. Vanilla Ice’s popular hit ‘Ice Ice Baby’ is a perfect example of this, where critics argued that the sample for ‘Ice Ice Baby’ was actually taken from David Bowie’s track ‘Queen’, therefore people considered it as an act of stealing. But Vanilla Ice immediately disagreed of this criticism and claimed that his track was different. But today, your point is considered by various hip-hop artists.
