Karen Eckmeier shows you the secret of integrating photos of family into an Accidental Landscape. Beach and lake scenes are the easiest to make because the background layers are simple strips of blue and sand.
For more detailed instructions and more landscapes ideas, refer to my book Accidental Landscapes on Karen’s website: www.kareneckmeier.com

I did three large story blocks just as I’ve seen in your videos. I hand sewed them all, including the entire queen size quilt 100% hand sewn. I did photo transfer on all of them, including appliqué forms from other fabric eg Moana. But I didn’t do the quarter inch boundaries which would have made it so much easier as I had to hand sew the diff parts of the appliqué with different colour thread. Of course when I quilted it I had to sew around the appliqué and on the back side I had to quilt through two layers so as not to sew through the appliqué on the front. And stupidly, through my inexperience, I had a theme and photos on the backing as well. Consequently I had to quilt both sides which took me two months to do. And I worked as a nurse. But I ramble. I want to thank you, Karen, for the landscape tutorials. My quilt came out beautiful!

Your quilt sounds like it was quite an adventure and worth the extra effort!

@@karen.eckmeier it was actually more than an adventure. We had strict lockdowns in Australia and, as an anaesthetic nurse with no elective surgery to do, I had to either go to ICU or not work. I decided to only work a couple of shifts a week because of my age and I had so much spare time. I became so frustrated and angry and worried about my children in other countries where Covid was so rampant. Then I decided to make a quilt for my only grandchild and I deliberately chose to hand sew (I actually can’t sew on a machine) I knew what I wanted as a centrepiece, a family tree on a 20x20 block. Then I found your video on the landscapes. My word! I was so excited when the first couple of layers came together. My husband also made me the two L shapes for a frame that you showed in one of your videos. And I improved with all the videos I watched. To cut a very long story short, the quilt took two years to complete and when our borders in Australia opened in April this year, I was just finishing and I was able to take it to South Africa. In fact I completed the labels in Croatia in transit. So thank you once again for your tutorials. I am returning home in September where I will start with my second quilt, for my eldest child, also hand sewn.

@@hazelem1266 Thank you for sharing the full story, WOW! It really was an all consuming project during challenging times. We quilters have always known that quilting is the best therapy!

Over the years I have had a few brands that I preferred, but then they went out of business, so now I use whatever is currently available. I have tried all of the brands that I showed on the video and like them equally.

The photos are transferred from the computer and printed on a paper-backed piece of fabric that then prints out on the printer. That is what I discuss in the very beginning of the video, but of course it is in English.
