In the photoelectric effect, why can two or more photons not add up to make sufficient energy to cause emission of electrons from a metal? Why do we see one photon-one electron interaction? Because photons don’t add up to each other’s energies. They can only add up to their own amplitudes or intensities. Photons’ energies are related only with their frequencies (frequency of their electric and magnetic fields oscillations) and not with their intensities (how much photons are bunched together). So if an electron’s bondage energy to its orbit or to atomic nucleus is higher than the energy of a photon’s frequency, it doesn’t matter how much of the same photons hit such an electron. Their energies can’t overcome the threshold of even a single electron’s bondage energy to its orbit in an atom. On the other hand, just one single photon with higher energy than such a threshold is enough to break apart an electron’s bond to its orbit or nucleus.
