Larger sensors dont always mean more light - but larger photo-sites usually do. My reasons for stop using the gopro were similar - the lens distortion as well as the dynamic range made it almost useless to me...

As an aside, I think the DPR article on size of photo-site vs noise article was about when you (1) increase the MP while keeping the sensor size the same and (2) print/view the images at the same size. As you said, the noise per pixel decreases with increasing size of the photo-site. But, if you scale images, the pixel size also shrinks so the visual impact of the noise is less. If you create a huge print or pixel-peeped, you would be able to see the difference. So, I think both you and DRP are correct. You typically won’t notice the impact of larger photo-sites for a given sensor size when you scale the images. But you will notice it you have the same resolution and increase the sensor (photo-site) size.

Yeah for sure Michael, I agree that is what their video was about. They did not talk about low-light and high ISO, which is actually where photo site size does matter, and would seem to be one of the main reason for high ISO capability, is to work in really low light ... and again as I said in the video all cameras are great at their base ISO even phone cameras, and thus comparing cameras at their base ISO of course the one with far more MP will have a better print. And ultimately it was like saying which camera has the best resolution at base ISO, er the one with the best resolution, and the low light aspect seemed moot .... as they did not actually shoot in low light, if actually shot in low light they would have had to have used more than base ISO ... For me that was the video I was hoping to see, the A7R IV and the A7S III at 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800 ... that would have been very interesting, a LOW light, high ISO test. I photograph a lot in the field, with difficult lighting condition using practical light, often pushing ISO's to their breaking point of usability ... so I would have been very keen to see how the two cameras fared. :) It is actually a topic with lots of aspects, I have printed 12MP 2 meter tall landscapes shot at 1600 ISO back in 2008, and it was one of my most popular pieces. Being able to capture a shot at high iso hand held in the dark that was previously impossible to shoot that way. And it was the moment, mood, colour etc, people loved, and the MP was not even talked about. I think I feel a video coming :) Cheers and thank you for the conversation so much :) Matt

@@MattIrwinPhotography "it was the moment, mood, colour etc, people loved..." So true: its the picture that matters (I rarely 'see' the noise unless I go looking for it). The test by DPR was at ISO 6400 (high-ish) so I think their conclusion is not unreasonable. I think of it as our visual system 'blurs' or averages across a number of very small pixels (560 PPI versus 250PPI). I'd love to see the impact of photo site size on astrophotography because I find the one time I do 'see' noise is with faint stars because the faint stars disappear (stacking shows the signal is present).

Please let us see more in the future about this 1" lens/camera ... I am probably the only one with a Nikon Keymission 170 in Sweden, I even got two of them (probably the only one in Europe with two of them) ... but I am interested in something newer, that haven't lost support yet.

As always, a great video. I really appreciate your photography matters whatever the gear above the gear matters more than the photography. It seems to me all the manufactures are brilliant, none of them perfect. For me, this is exemplified when you point out that we are in a magnificent era when the all the gear is so very good. You praised the Go-Pro, but pointed out that for your purpose, it’s not so good in low light conditions. Please, keep up the integrity, honesty, and balance: it’s all too rare on KZbin (“GoPro has had its day” would be used by others I fear).

Looks like an interesting project. It will be a little better than the go pro, but will be nowhere close to your ZFc z50 or z5 on low light. It will take great video on good light with its 18mp sensor.

I have the GoPro HERO5 (I know it’s old). I got the tripod mount for it and quickly realized it mounts well on my camera with a hot shoe plate and on my backpack strap with the Peak Design Capture Camera Clip V3. I really only share videos of me crashing my bike with $8,000 of gear on my back. Don’t worry though, I only ever broke one rib so far. 😕

Just make sure that whatever your solution is that it, in low light, simultaneously AF follows the eyes of a toddler running through a playground, AND the eyes of the bunny the child is carrying, while you are moving on your scooter :) [btw, the Insta 360 looks cool!]

That is why I have never bought a GoPro because they are highly over priced for the size of the sensor. I have seen many Uk Landscape & city scape Vloggers use GoPro on the hot shoe of the camera. As well as a Vlogging rig. Gareth Danes recently did a street photo shoot with flash. Interesting. Keep safe my friend.

Nice video. The lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 14.4mm - very wide angle. For action use, I would want both a, say, 35mm equivalent and a 100mm equivalent - for starters. Just for situations where the big gear does not fit.

If a larger pixel/photosite collects more light and so is better in low light, when does this stop being the case. I mean if 12MP is better on a one inch sensor than 20 MP for low light , is 6 MP better than 12. If we follow through to this ultimate conclusion one single one inch wide pixel on a one inch sensor should be the best of all right? But you'll only see one colour. So I guess the balance is pixel size v's having enough pixels per inch of sensor to stop the image looking pixelated?

That does look really interesting. I watched their video promo and they brag a lot about low light. They also claim 8x slo-mo in there but then I saw a spec for 120 fps somewhere else so that's 4x, right? I'd like an affordable high speed video camera. The really fast ones seem very expensive. Know of anything in the middle ground? It will be interesting to see what you learn in your testing. GoPros are fun but they have their limits, as you point out. We get fun video in good lighting with cheap tiny cameras on model planes and rockets, but low light's always poor.

@@MattIrwinPhotography My iPhone 11 does 240 frames per sec, which is fun sometimes, and my GoPro does the same. I tried to film arrows from a bow once. Also filmed a pen tumbling off a table edge for an engineering analysis. Seems 240 FPS is about all that's available before jumping to specialty cameras costing many thousands of dollars. I was hoping for around 1000 FPS but only $1000 perhaps. Maybe I'm dreaming.
@jefflastofka9289
@jefflastofka9289 3 жыл бұрын
And now looking at this in black and white text, going from 240 to 1000 doesn't seem like enough difference for the money, so perhaps more like 2000 FPS. Probably dreaming. It could be lower resolution, like 720p. I'm thinking of education and engineering uses, not fine photography.

Matt, what's happening in Melbourne? Protesters marching against riot police, unarmed citizens being pepper-sprayed and fired upon with rubber bullets at close range!
@MattIrwinPhotography
@MattIrwinPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah they are anti lock down protestors ... some don't believe in lockdown, some don't believe in masks, and some don't believe in vaccines, some don’t believe in all three. The govt asked them not to protest, as we have a 5km limit, with only 5 reasons to leave home, protesting not being one of them. As for the tactics used by police, I have not seen or heard of any injuries. All in all it was a very sad day for me, and Melbourne, and the efforts of everybody else who is in lockdown. If one person is infectious with Delta, and goes to an event like this I suppose it could be a super spreader moment. I am not condoning the force the Police used, but I certainly think while we are all here essentially trapped at home, and 5000 out of 5,000,000 decide to break the law. It diminished what the other 4.995 million other people are doing. I think an emergency doctor put it best. Saying 'We are getting COVID cases into the hospital, our resources are stretched, our staff are exhausted, and the last thing we need is injured civilians and police coming in to our already stretched emergency units. These actions simply make things worse, and it is the opposite of what they are trying to achieve ... we do not need more pressure on the medical system ...' This is a very complex problem. Here in Melbourne we are now 210 days + of hard lockdown, and we are all over it ... Our Federal Government did not secure enough vaccines in the beginning, our 2 shot vaccine rate is 31% of population over 16, so we sadly are at the mercy of our Federal Governments very poor decision making, when the rest of the western world had been moving much faster. Now the populous pays the price. The gov. are hoping it will be the end of the year we reach 70% double shot. And I think there is a 50-50 chance Melbourne will stay in lockdown until then. And I would believe there is not a single Melburnian who is happy about that, as non of us are happy now. I think the hardest part right now is I think the gov have lost sight of the cost on the community with C19 deaths, vs the cost on the community with failed business, mental health issues, kids and their schooling ... and everything else. It is a real mess, and up until a week or so ago, they were still talking about trying to get to ZERO covid in the community, and I think we all know it is impossible now, and we have to live with it and get on with our lives ... but I must say it is not clear to me what the best path forward is from here … and we are now seeing signs of countries even so they have double vaccinated population at 70%, Delta is coming strong, and case numbers are on the rise again … Do you have any advice Philip? Cheers Matt

@jefflastofka9289 3 жыл бұрын
@@MattIrwinPhotography It's somewhat similar here in the US. People want to blame "The Government". I think instead it needs to be peer pressure. The gov't can't fix what the people keep deliberately messing up. Even without enough vaccines available, if people would behave responsibly we could ease off of mandatory lockdowns. Wear masks, social distance, avoid concentrated gatherings as much as possible. Simple things. Too many uncooperative people won't even try......

Matt, thanks for your openness. When those news clips came my way it reminded me of those George Floyd protests here in N. America that erupted into senseless violence, damaged to property, looting and erosion of public morale. Innocent businesses that just happened to be in the ‘line of fire’ suffered tremendous financial loss to their property as well as future revenue as the public are weary of re-entering those affected areas. Fortunately, all that is now under the bridge thanks to the resilience of, like you say, the majority over the disgruntled minority. I do hope you and your loved ones will stay safe and well. Cheers from BC🇨🇦👍😃
