This is so helpful Andy, so many times I have arrived at a location and the conditions hadn't matched my expectations. I guess I should level my expectations ahead of the trip! But, this is excellent advice and very helpful guidance regarding editing of arguably "not ideal" images. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I've wanted to shoot a video in this location for ages and was really disappointed with the conditions when we went up there. So that's the video I ended up making....I wish it had been with a brilliant sunrise instead, but in reality we more often don't get the conditions we want than we do.

This opened my eyes, I have not liked the blue skies in many of my photos ( especially if there is nothing more interesting happening in the sky). There are ways to enhance the feeling of photo. Thank you very much for this video!

The problem with blue skies is that blue is such a strong primary colour that it completely dominates the feel of the image, and images can feel a little bit "postcard-like"

Really enjoyed this Andy, great to see the process behind transforming an image with somewhat average conditions into a really nice image. Must say I prefer the horizontal image personally 👍 I always look forward to your videos, i find them a refreshing and down to earth alternative to most landscape photography channels on KZbin

I preferred the horizontal as well - the grass gave it a swirl effect that I found quite interesting against the peak.

Love these workflow videos, they are very educational. I'm always stuck trying to figure out what to do with boring blue skies. I'll try to apply your ideas to some recent photos and see how it goes

Very interesting, I learned a lot. Conditions are not always ideal, but yes, there's always something to shoot. I'm very impressed with how you transformed that image and how great it looks after. It opens up for different perspectives. Thanks a lot for sharing this.

Great video Andy.a lot good info packed in. Last year I went to Lisbon for Christmas and decided to shot long exposure of that long bridge , and it was great location indeed. This year i will going to spend Christmas in Sevile, can you tip where are interesting location to shot long exposure ?

This is a very in-depth tutorial with a great message. There is always something to shoot, even if you don't get what you are looking for you can take that opportunity to get the photo and process it in a completely different style. I take some of those photos and try to convert them to BW or just find some of my inspiration (such as this) and achieve that look. Thanks for sharing your workflow!

Thanks for the comment. Black and white is a good option for blue skies, but for this particular scene I felt the shadow area didn't have enough tonal variation to create a nice black and white

The video title definitely caught my attention, when I put my glasses on and saw it was your video, it brought a smile to my face. Outstanding workshop and fond memories! Hope your trip to the western US is a great experience. I love Canyonlands and Arches, and hoping to get to Capital Reef next summer. Looking forward to your videos on that trip, particularly Capital Reef, as it doesn't get the attention that the others garner (Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Arches and Canyonland). You may want to get a few photos of Hanksville too, if you are in the area.

Great photo! I'm not a fan of clear skies either. I usually won't shoot under those conditions, unless I have to. Thank you for showing your workflow as well!

I've been very hesitant to do sweeping changes to my images so far, because it's so easy to cross the line to things looking fake. Although I wouldn't have changed the color of the photo in the vid so drastically, I still feel encouraged to "live a little" in my future edits ;)

Yeah, I completely understand that and to be honest I'm not super comfortable with it either, hence this image not being a portfolio image that will go on my website or be sold for print. I'd wanted to make a video in this location for years, and then when we got these conditions decided to carry on with it and see what I could do with it

Good tutorial. Thanks. I prefer the horizonal image. To quote you (even though I wasn't there with you), the horizontal image seems to "capture the mood and emotion that you felt at the scene."

Maybe try to make the horizontal image more wider like a 21:9 aspect or like that.

wonderful location, unfortunately clear sky happen quite often in Italy, worse than that for me is the flat covered sky, would you consider sky replacement? I am starting to consider it for architectural photography where the sky isn’t really the main focus of the image ….

Thanks for the comment. Yep, where I live in Lisbon we get them got 9 or 10 months a year...generally in the Dolomites though it's not so common later in the year as the changing temperature of the mountains can have a massive effect on the air condensing and making clouds. This year though, it wasn't really getting too cold in the night and there was less temperature variation. As for sky replacement...personally it's not something I would do. I'm not really comfortable with changing the colour of the trees like I did in this video and it doesn't really represent my work. But obviously it's purely personal and this isn't documentary photography.
