Thanks for the video. Last night we had a big Northern Lights event - I went out with my new iPhone 16 pro. Last time I photographed the northern lights on my iPhone 12 pro, it was pretty good. Strong colours, dark sky. The 16pro just seems to make the sky too light. It picks up detail, like the hills and the landscapes and renders them as if it was twilight, but the sky has this washed out pink look, and very few stars are visible. The northern lights' colours themselves were weak and washed out. What could I be doing wrong?

The sensor specs are identical save for a faster interface, so I think as you said, it has more to do with software. I’ve just upgraded from an 11 pro, and was quite disappointed to hear various sources complaining that the 48mp ultra wide results in significantly worse low light performance than the 12mp ultra wide on 15 pro :/ E.g. in Fstopper’s review “Iphone 16 pro camera test (major flaws)” he was shocked at how bad the low light photos came out on 16 pro vs 15 pro and 14 pro. It seems almost as bad as the 11 pro’s ultra wide was. One of the main reasons I was looking forward to the upgrade was to get a much better 0.5x camera, with better low light performance.

I just noticed something, the photo from the 15 has very light red beams running up and the 16 has blue. The 16 looks better or more brilliant in color. I have done several tests and also have seen some others that have had red beams as well on the 15 and 14, mine has the blue sometimes it seems on the 16. I also noticed when shooting in the dark bathroom that there is a small light that is blinking rapidly inside the cameras lens area when on night mode 30 sec. And I wonder if that may be where this blue light is from, or red in that left shot. Something to do with to the night mode and how it operates maybe. Idk just made me wonder if that bit has always been there and until someone pointed it out you just didn’t see it because it was not invasive enough to catch your eye. I mean these are all still incredible pictures and until you pointed it out I didn’t to ink nothing about it, I remembered seeing the red color beams in this left 15 pick and came back to see. In settings you have to turn on HEIC max and turn it on in the top right where yours says RAW max before taking the photo to unlock 48 MP shooting. That allows you to not shoot raw and not have to post process but get a 42 MP useable image straight from pressing the shutter. Otherwise it will be potato quality especially at night.

Thats not right mate. ProRAW max and HEIF Max both will pixel bin down to 12MP in night mode.
@RyanMonoxide3 ай бұрын
@@ShayneMostyn it is correct. I do car photography and shoot in HEIF Max and it outputs 48 MP files and when you swipe up in the photos app it shows 48 MP resolution. It even mentions this in the settings app under Camera>Formats. So it does not pixel dump. I just verified this on iOS 18.1 beta 4. The most current.

@@RyanMonoxide Night Mode is the important part. In good lighting youre absolutely correct. Its the night that pixel bins.

Is this tested with iOS 17 or 18?

18 mate. The phone launches with 18

According to camera settings you can only shoot 12MP with night mode. In order to shoot 48MP it needs to be a standard image with enough light at .5x or 1x

No 48mp in night mode.

Wilk You test Pixel 9 pro/xl ?

No, I will skip it. There has been little difference in Pixels astro since the pixel 4. Its so impressive and always has been. I tend to skip a model or two.

I downloaded a long shutter speed app and I can use bulb made to let it run indefinitely. I use the app on my Apple Watch so as not to poke the phone and muck up the photo.
