On the drive down from Lewis to Harris, I travelled along a single track road to photograph some of the many Bothies which are scattered around this beautiful landscape.
I am a Professional Landscape Photographer based in the Highlands of Scotland. I specialise in the teaching of landscape photography and offers residential and daily photography workshops. I also sell prints of my own photographs from my own studio.

I bet the first bothie would make for a great subject for nighttime shoot. You can paint it with light, with a starry sky.

Sounds a great idea…..I may try it when I'm back over there in a few weeks.

Interesting Video, good tuition but maybe have another look at the halos in the finished images?

Well explained video, cheers, Dean. I'd be interested to know the history of the building, their past use, and what they are used for now.

Thank you for watching David and appreciate your comment. I find these buildings fascinating and am always keen to learn more about their history. The 2nd one in this video is still used today but only as a daytime stopover for a local Stornoway family. There are no sleeping arrangements there. There was clearly a widely spread out community in this area once upon a time whereby local families (mainly women and children) would use them as summer houses bringing their small herd of cattle of sheep to graze on the summer pastures. I hope you continue to watch my future travels.

These are not bothies - they are more correctly called sheilings which were occupied during the summer grazing of cattle. They make a great photographic subject particularly as they are now mostly left derelict.

You're absolutely correct…..there are so many reminders throughout Lewis of this time in history. Fascinating historical value.

Hey Dean, you switched to Fuji! Getting nice results from the 20-35 I see. Fujifilm lent me one late last year to evaluate for night skies in one of their X-Stories. I keep trying to convince myself it’s not that much better than my X-series lenses, but to be honest I’m fighting a losing battle! Nice vid by the way.

Hi Mark….good to hear from you. The 20-35 is a cracking lens which I'm thoroughly enjoying. I've still got my Nikon system which after using for 30 yrs+ I am struggling to part with to be honest. However, I am using the GFX system pretty much exclusively now as I prefer the in camera 65x24 crop. Hope you are well.
