Photographing waterfowl || BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY challenges - common eider

The plan for this vlog was to go out and photograph whatever I could find. I started with looking for the purple sandpiper, but ended up photographing waterfowl. The challenge with bird photography is many things. Finding the bird is one, get into right position to get to the eye-level, the right background and light. The biggest challenge this time was laying low between the hard rocks. But the hard work paid of with some ok shots of the common eider.

The Eider is a stunning duck, and you managed to capture their beauty superbly. Whilst getting to eye level has it's challenges, it is definitely worth the effort and discomfort. Your images were magic, which makes it all worthwhile.

nice video, makes me miss photography in the nordic countries! Can you comment on your impressions of D4s vs D500 as contemplating getting one of these. My D800 is too slow

Both are great cameras in terms of sharpness and image quality. But of course the D4s is better at higher ISO and has better dynamic range. But its really good to have the 1,5 crop factor with the D500 when you need that. Both a fast cameras and do a great job in field.

Another superb blog. I remember the first photos of yours of the Common Eider and how amazing they were/are. You said that you switched from the Nikon D4S to the D500, I assume because of the ISO improvement and AF? Is this what you are also using in Live View for the video segments? Either way, fan for life!

Unfortunately there are no eider ducks in our area and Norway is far. Trond get a wetsuit when you are in the cold water, then you do not have to torture yourself and do not get wet. But because your photos still speak volumes and you were almost there underwater.
