Photographing Waxwings in flight using Procapture on the OM-1 with the 150-400mm lens

Using Procapture on the OM-1 I attempt flight photography of the Waxwings not far from where I live. Procapture makes it easy, but you do need the right light. Sunshine not only gives you a higher shutter speed, but it puts detail into the feathers of the birds.
For most of the video I use the Lumix G9 Mk2. It allows me to shoot 120 fps 4K video for slow motion and the autofocus works very well in video mode.
With both camera bodies I use the OM 150-400mm lens.

I love finding waxwings congregated like that, Mike. I have found a couple of mulberry trees that they hit like that in May when the berries are ripe. When I find them like that I just pull up with my tripod and sit there and shoot as long as the light is good. Thanks for taking us on another fine outdoor outing.

Hey there Mike great video per usual. As a hobbyist who shoots mainly birds with the OM-1(&150-400) you've been the best resource. Curious if you're keen to try or upgrade to the OM-1 Mark II. Personally, I think I'm most curious to see if there's a tangible improvement in bird autofocus performance.

That pro capture on the OM-1 seems excellent lovely flight shots and open wing spread timing of the waxwing take off. They soon golloped up all those berries what will they do tomorrow great that you were there before they finished.

Lovely work! The behavior is quite familiar to me. We have Cedar Waxwings come through the Bay Area, California. I can drive a short distance to photograph them feeding on Toyon berries with my E-M1 mk iii and 100-400. They also visit my neighbor’s persimmon tree, so I have opportunities to watch them feasting on the ripe fruit.

I much more prefer cloudy days. The light reflection on the eye makes the birds look more vivid like shown at minute 4:36. Less contrast and no shadows are two more advantages, when sun is not shining. Brillant footage one more time!

Lovely video and stills. I found your comment about the AF on the OM-1 for stills vs the G9II interesting especially as you've used both extensively now. As a stills shooter, I'll stick with the OM-1 but if I were into video the G9II looks like a very nice package.

Amazing video of these beautiful birds. I was also disappointed with the spec of the mkII, after watching the OM videos. Very uninspiring images which could have been made with almost any camera. I did watch Thomas Eisl who has made a much more objective assessment and much more positive. The autofocus and tracking improvements are impressive. I have pre ordered and am looking forward to trying one at the local store.

Hey, how do you find specific sights for specific bird species? This just looks like a random road somewhere and yet there are waxwings consistently there for multiple consecutive days. And you do this a lot, you come to a location for a particular bird. Thanks for the great video, enjoyed it as usual!

You qould have been the right person to test the new mark ii camera and the new longer lens - but maybe you didnt want to (?) (Fwiw i was surprised at some of the reviewers - landscape photographers with a 1200mm equivalent lens didnt really make much sense Olympus.)
