Dear Mike, I have only discovered your good work in the last few months. I feel very strongly that I want the precious wildlife you have photographed, to be still present on planet earth in another 1000 years -- can we be confident of this? I am understanding very strongly how the planet system will fail in another few generations -- it is too late, they say, for many species, but for others we may be able to do something. Thank you Mike. Thank you for this loving gift of beauty = which is God I find.

I’m not a photographer but my husband is very keen. I’ve so enjoyed looking at this video, thank you so much. We live in the country on 3 acres of farm land in North central Florida and we’re lucky to be surrounded by amazing birds which we feed from 6 different feeders. Yesterday a Crane spent the day on our front lawn with our two pet donkeys. Hope she comes back though I suspect she’s at the pond next door with her friends.

Very nice Mike, Dad & I visited those very same hides of Alan's, plus the cuckoo & restart hides in early May this year. A fantastic set up, & with Alan being a pro photographer he really has an eye for the backdrop the we all love. We're booking again for next year, at a different season (Autumn) & very much looking forward to it. I meant to do some video myself, but as you say (especially with the badgers & sparrowhawk), you have to make your mind up between stills and video; & I chose stills. Excellent vlog, thanks for sharing. Best, Nick

A great review of Alan's hides - love the inflight pictures of the woodpecker. My partner and I have spent many hours in the hides. The most recent been the kingfisher, otter hide And the day time Tawny owl, which were great. We also recommend the hides to friends. The hides are well maintained. Alan also checks, that everyone is ok with the settings required for each hide. Highly recommend everyone goes to at least one of his hides 🙂

Great video Mike. I visited the hides 6 years ago and I can see that he has substantially extended the hide set ups. The installed tripod bases must have made life much easier as well. The Kingfisher hide I guess has gone now! This led to much bewilderment for the unknowing at the time as to how people get such dramatic images of these little birds, followed by many entries into camera club competitions!

I’m tempted to move over to Olympus from canon r6&r7 as the rolling shutter on them are shocking are the images fine detail as sharp as the full frame and such

I am very happy with mine and show the results on YT. Take a look at "dennis jacobsen Hercules nature reserve in Sweden" on YT. His is one of the best wildlife photography channels and he has done several recent films on the OM-1. The bad news is I have never bought a new camera thinking I would get better quality pictures. I buy for a new feature I may want, but all cameras producs great pictures. There are many thousands of wildlife photographers using Canon gear and taking great pictures.

Thank you Mike - very interesting and helpful. You have captured some good video at night with just the LED lighting. Is it right to assume that it was also possible to take stills without flash under the same conditions?
@MikeLaneFRPS2 жыл бұрын
Yes, especially for the Badgers. I think Alan said mostly he did not setup flash at the Badgers, but you would need to check.

Great video! I was lucky enough to visit Alan's hides, and was so impressed with his setup. By the way, I think that the 2.0 software update for Nikon Z9 introduced something similar to the precapture mode (finally!), but I think it's limited to JPEGs for now.

Great video Mike. Can I ask what the walk in to the hide is like? I'm thinking of booking a day but use a stick so if it's a difficult one I may need a rethink. Thanks

It is not very far, but it is uphill on a narrow woodland path. As it is so short I would think okay if you take your time.

At around 9:10 you say that you need to be able to set your camera up into mechanical shutter mode - is there a reason for this as although the OM-1 has flash turned off by default with silent shutter, it is possible to enable it in the menus. Maybe this is something to do with sync speeds or something? Thank you in anticipation of your answer.
@MikeLaneFRPS2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, I was being generic to all cameras. Every time Alan puts customers in his night hides he must have a huge problem. He tries to help them set up, but with so many camera models it will be difficult. Few people will know what to do when he hands them a flash trigger to go on the hot shoe. A manual mechanical shutter speed of 1/250th would be okay for most cameras, although I have recently read one brand has now done away with mechanical shutters in a high end camera. With the OM-1 I was happy to go to mechanical shutter mode. First I have never used flash with the electronic shutter option and it would not be the place to learn. Second the sync speed is faster, which could elimate ghosting at dusk.
@alanryder2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mike. I am visiting these hides next week and wanted to be as prepared as possible - hence my question and re-watch of your helpful video. I take your point on sync speed and after reading the manual, have learned that the OM-1 silent shutter mode can only sync up to 1/100s compared to the 1/250s maxi mum when using a mechanical shutter.

I have read that M43 cameras are not so good in poor light many times, but never noticed in practice. I tried to test it while I had the Om-1 and Sony A1, but harder than you might think to create a fair test. The limited testing I did showed nothing in it.
