Rule of thirds were 'pop'ularized by 35mm or 6X9 formats, because the ratio is 2X3. It works well by rebatment of the sides. It has become overwhelming dogma applied to everything because dogma likes simple ideas. If you want to learn composition, like the masters used, buy a book called The Secret Geometry of the Masters. It was out of print for a while, but is back as a paper back.
