Wow - thanks for sharing the RAW file - mind blown! It makes my Sony look like a toy camera. I can't believe what you can recover without noise. I'll still be trying the technique even on lower quality images

Backlighting such harsh scenes is key. I have a couple I took last year but I didn't think of converting them to B&W. I'll give it a go!

And I just looked up MY dynamic range... Pales in comparison to the GFX. My Nikon Z7II only has 10 stops of dynamic range. A little more than half of what your camera gets. 😢

Interesting about the greens. Always struggled with them and can be a problem living in Ireland. Liked the black and white option. Would using a linear profile help? Sometimes find it useful to start with a completely raw file with such a range.

An interesting process. Those scenes can also be shot in a three-image HDR and adjusted to look real.

As always I enjoyed the video and the your thought processes and workflow to create the final image. If you had wanted the image to also be in color would you have bracketed your exposure and blended the image (HDR) to create an final color rendition?

Hi Adam, right up to the 12 min mark, roughly, dedpite all your excellent post work, making something out of nothing, imho, the tree to the right & another tree further into the background, there is a bright line running up the entire left side of that tree, from my vantage point watching this on the big screen, I can't take my eyes off of that bright line running up the entire tree's left side, it is a major distraction & I suspect there isn't much can be done about it, imo, this file is not a keeper, the b&w looked the best imho... Bill...

I agree with your comment as I also found it to be an distraction. With some of the AI tools in LR and PS it could be removed.

Same here. I noticed it's present from the beginning, in the Raw file, so it's not an artifact. But even though it's an accurate depiction of the scene, that bright line is distracting to me.

Hey uncle Grumpy! Do you find that you have to focus stack a lot more often on the medium format systems? If so what situations do you find you have to focus stack more often?

I often find that reducing the whites in lightroom flattens the scene. I get that you need to do that to recover the highlights but do you find that too?

Probably not many. However you can purchase both used GFX 50 and 100 at about the same price of any other high end camera, the 50 even less so it’s not out of reach. Failing that it’s very easy to combine different exposed images in Lightroom

or shoot film and expose for the shadows and never care about highlights being blowout
