Hi Lorol! I was so happy to discover your channel that appears to be exclusively, dealing with Olympus/OM, cameras! My newest camera is the OM-1 while my first SLR camera was the original OM-1, just for reference! that was somewhere back in the mid-1970s! In those days the cameras were not as intelligent and you had to know what you were doing but it was easy compared to today’s electronic jungle with all the menus and sub menus endlessly listed on the LCD screen. I don’t think, anyone ever masters the entire menu. You have to focus on the things that are most important to you and hope that things work out. I owned an Olympus DSLR before I got my OMD Mark three something or other, but I did not get to use it before I bought my OM-1. I love my new OM-1 but since I am not a pro, I don’t get to use it enough to master the menus and know how to control all that stuff on the fly, which is important to me, especially since I plan to go to Rome over Christmas. So the whole point of this diatribe is to let you know that I am extremely happy that I bumped into your channel! Every other photographic channel is rife with complications and menu systems and all sorts of things that I can follow but I can’t apply the advice when I am out there taking pictures. I check the settings in the screen. I focus if I have it on manual and I shoot, hoping the program I’ve set it to, will make it work! so far so good, but I will see what happens in Rome! Thanks again!

I abusively shot an image indoor that was over 5 stops underexposed (E-M10III) and made a usable, attractive portrait from it. (Just for curiosity, because after that shot, I noticed the completely dark screen...). With that same camera, I took 8 second images handheld. It requires quite some exercise, but now I can easily rely on 2 to 4 seconds. The ISO is not that dramatic as you describe it. Unless you plan to blow up the photo's wall size, you can definitely use 3200 because even then the colours are not washed out enough to throw them in the bin. Although ISO up to 800 is very usable in prints up to A3. About lenses for these cameras, I think the 12-40 mm 1/2.8 is a jewel that is an excellent compromise for a prime lens. Although the 45 mm 1.8 is extremely sharp and a joy to use.

Cool video. I have the same model and it suits me well. I programmed the function lever to become the on/off switch and it is a pleasure. How do you feel about the audio quality for video? Do you consider it a heavy camera?

I shoot events regulary in poor interior lighting with my E-M1 MkII - I shoot raw files and let the auto ISO go up to ISO 6400. If I expose correctly the out put is good - and if you use the free OM Workspace software it has a very good AI de-noise function that only works with the Olympus raw files - and it does a good job to get rid of colour noise and keep details. A game changer for me.

I have the Olympus OMD E-M1ii dynamic range is very good at ISO 200 and ISO 400 after that the small sensor you have to be more in the ball park when you get your exposure. Over exposing can give you more dynamic range but you have to be very careful not to clip your highlights. I would bring my highlights when they clip one or two quarters back down. By doing this it will remove all grain from the image. If you have strong highlights and don't want to risk blowing highlights use DXO PhotoLab or DXO PureRaw and export to DNG if you wish to edit in another editor. I use the feature that shows me clipping highlights and shadows on the image so I don what will be clipped.

Auto ISO can be fine in low light because you can set a high ISO limit for the E-M1 Mkii. I really do believe that you should be receiving tips rather than giving at this stage.

Hi, Huw. Thanks for your comment! You see, I'd rather set the ISO myself. I'm well aware I can set an ISO limit, but if I set it to 1000, for example, and yet the photo could be taken at 400 with a slower shutter-speed, I'd prefer have a cleaner image rather than having the camera decide for me. But, please, let me know where you share your tips so I can learn from you! I'm always open to learning. And, like I said in the video, new tips are also always welcome in the comments section. Thanks for watching :)

@@lorols Here’s a tip for you, not that I normally have the temerity or desire to give tips even with over 30 years of experience with multiple cameras, unless specifically asked for, which is how I justify giving this one. Your E-M1 MkII is perfectly happy with up to ISO 6400 and at a push, if you can eliminate noise in post or are not worried about it, to 12800. I just took a picture of my overactive young cat that required a 250th shutter speed, which necessitated 6400iso with the 14mm at f1:4, the maximum aperture it can go with that particular zoom lens at the zoom required. The pictures are perfectly noiseless and, far more importantly, sharp and in-focus. This happened to be with my Lumix GX80 with kit 12-32 lens but the same applies to my E-M10 and E-M1 and Leica Q2. The Sony A7III can utilise at least one, possibly two stops higher ISO than the M4/3 but the Leica is, if anything, more noisy than M4/3 even though it is full frame.

@@hedydd2 No matter what ISO you use you get the best quality in terms of noise control, sharpness, colors for Olympus you should always shoot in ISO 200. Nothing less, nothing more. If its really needed at night, then you can step up 400 to 800 and so forth. But for day time. ISO 200 is the best sweet spot. I owned Olympus from EM1 to EM5 and EM10 for over decades.

@@amybella You must have had pre-production units? None of those models have been out more than a decade and I’ve had two e-m10, and e-m1 plus five Panasonic m4\3 . Every one of the 16 MP cameras has been perfectly good to iso1600 when a suitable faster shutter speed makes it necessary. I have zero issue shooting at 3200 to 6400 range on these and up to iso12800 with my Sony A7iii. Yes, the native iso of Olympus cameras is 200, but the rest of the range is there to be exploited. There is more than one way to use a camera and to suggest that people limit themselves is nonsense. They can soon see for themselves whether they have an acceptable image at higher iso and set their own limit according to circumstances. For instance, no photo I’ve ever taken has been compromised due to an auto iso setting at 1000. Plenty due to too slow a shutter speed though.

@@hedydd2 I have owned all of the EM series Olympus practically. Before that I had the Olympus E-1 till the 330. Then switched over to the newer EM systems. E-1 has been 20 years. So its considered "decades" been shooting for long time. What I meant to say was if you want the best dynamic range best colors, its optimal to shoot at ISO native 200. This has been the rule I always apply for my shooting, to get the best dynamic range and shoot RAW. This only applies to Olympus not all cameras. That does not mean, that you dont get quality results boosting the iso higher. That is the way it is.
