Colors are important and what defines your colors inside your photography is the color space you shoot in. But what should you shoot in and what is the ideal color space? You've probably seen settings inside your editing software like sRGB, Adobe RGB Pro, Photoshop RGB, and even CMYK. But what do they mean and why do they matter when it comes to your photography?

You mentioned Prophoto RGB in the intro but did not compare it to the others. It would also be helpful to understand what is compromised when converting from a high-quality RAW or DNG file to one of these colour spaces

Nicely done! I love the use of vintage graphics and footage. Very creative, very polished. Also, more importantly: This is a wonderful comparison of the two color spaces. Thanks!

The reality of the different color spaces is not the ideal but the practical. It’s not how to make the perfect image but rather how to universally display it across a plethora of lousy computer displays. You can dream about your giant image being displayed at a gallery wall or such location but more eyes will see it on their lousy computer displays.

He said: 1. "the photograph taken in AdobeRGB mode can easily be converted into sRGB", and 2. "sRGB photographs can't easily be converted into AdobeRGB". Something is wrong there. Here is my version: 1. "the photograph taken in AdobeRGB mode can be converted into sRGB, however a change of colors will occur for the colors that are outside of the gamut of sRGB", 2. "sRGB photographs CAN easily be converted into AdobeRGB without loss of color". I am not sure what he was thinking, but maybe he was thinking about a roundtrip conversion from AdobeRGB, to sRGB, and back to AdobeRGB. The final result in AdobeRGB would then suffer from the loss of color that occurred at the first conversion of the roundtrip.

Adobe RGB was designed for CRT monitors and no flat screen monitors will cover it, and then only if you have spent thousands. CMYK has been the standard for printing since colour photos appeared in magazines. The paper we use is made for CMYK and you should use SRGB (or something else if you bragging rights) until the print stage, your printer will convert to CMYK. I doubt the average photographer could tell the difference between SRGB and the rest and then only if they use a very expensive monitor.

How Hasselblad HNCS relates to those color spaces?
@jean-claudemuller3199
@jean-claudemuller3199 Ай бұрын
HCNS is not a color space it's a complex color management system with individual camera sensor calibration and equalisation for each camera, precise 16 bit RAW files out of camera with very accurate interpolation algorithms when the sensor is only 14 bit, and other proprietary data treatments. Hasselblad has it's own color spaces in their Phocus post treatment software. It's Hasselblad RGB that is near to Prophoto RGB or for very precise works L* Hasselblad RGB that give a little bit more shadow details.

What is the "ideal" color space for editing a photo straight out of the camera, shot in JPEG and displayed on a 4K monitor? Will editing a straight out of the camera JPEG photo, edited using Adobe RGB, saved and displayed on the Web be automatically displayed there only in SRGB?

This is an ill-formed question. If you are goign to take jpg output from your camera, it should be sRGB, because much viewing sofware (and until recently, most web browsers) assumes jpg files are sRGB and ignores any meadata tagging it as something else. IF you use raw files to do editing, the editing software will recognize the range of colors in the raw file and edit the file in the color space you prefer and set in the editing software. The larger gamut will be preserved when you print from the editing software. HOWEVER, if you export to a jpg file to be viewed on the web or elsewhere, then it should be converted to sRGB because most viewers will beusing viewing software that assumes it is sRGB. (Most editing software does the conversion by default.)

If OOC JPEGs are the goal, I would always use sRGB (the camera setting is only for JPEG) and stay in this color space for editing. For general color accuracy and the largest possible color gammut, using RAW is a must, and I would still go with Adobe RGB and 16 bit/channel afterwards (ProPhoto RGB should only be used with 32 bit float/channel), since it is a good color space for CMYK printing, even though not the best imaginable.

JPEG is an only 8 bit per channel file system what is sufficient for direct viewing or printing without editing. Heavy editing an 8 bit JPEG results in tonal disruptions or banding in sRGB or even worse in Adobe RGB. Never ever go with a finished edited file from 8bit to 16bit or from a little sRGB space to a bigger Adobe RGB, this would not make sense. A quality image need to start with a RAW file edited in a 16bit large space, at minimum Adobe RGB, doing all editing with these conditions, this means intermediate files during processing have to be 16bit Adobe RGB TIFF's and only converting in 8 bit sRGB JPEG's at the very last step when generating files for the web or printer.

4K monitor doesn't mean that the screen has a high quality, it has a high resolution. Cheap 4 K monitors or TVscreen can have a high resolution but narrow color gamut, not much bigger than sRGB High end monitors have a gamut near Adobe RGB even if they are not 4K

Adobe RGB (1998) for printing. sRGB for social media. ProPhoto RGB is useless to me. No printer will ask for sRGB or ProPhoto RGB profiles.
