sRGB vs adobeRGB for photography - What YOU need to know!

Today I’m talking about colour space which is the sRGB, Adobe RGB and prophotoRGB profiles.
Colour spaces can be really confusing and there is a lot of conflicting information on line. But if you understand how it works, you can make better decisions in what to use, or what not to use, depending on what you intend on doing with your images. I am going to start with what colour profiles are, then the setting in camera and how it might affect your images, if at all… then how these different colour profiles will work in your computer.
There are so many different colour profiles and if you look at your computer display settings, you can pick so many different ones but for photography all you need to know about is sRGB, AdobeRGB(1998) and ProphotoRGB…these are set standards… so from the camera taking a photograph, through to editing and printing, you will, in theory, get the same colour and by the computer making mathematical calculations, it can keep these colours as consistent as possible.

My lightbulb moment a few years ago was to make my Monitors match a disappointing print I had just made, which was dull and had plugged up shadows. Then in LR I adjusted it until it looked the way I wanted. Since then, with that workflow, I have been completely happy with prints I make and with prints and photo books from labs. I suspect most use some 'industry standard' equipment calibration and whatever that is, they match my printer very closely. I switched from Adobe RGB to SRGB some time back ...possibly after watching an earlier video of yours that you mentioned that in. Keep up the great work!

It’s the “keep it simple” stupid model that works. For me, the challenge is always about printing and keeping one colour space is key. Your advice about doing test prints is solid but us of meagre means, it gets expensive but agree that calibrating screen with printer and paper types is always a challenge. Maybe worth mentioning that paper companies offer free profiles for your own specific printer. I use fotospeed and they are awesome for this. Nigel Danson did a series on this which is also great for people wanting to delve into printing from home. Thank bud! I am also still rocking the a7iii and it’s awesome. Cheers Jase

Useful video on what is a confusing topic. I visited the topic some years ago and my working space in the image editor was always set to ProPhoto RGB. I used to use the export for web option and had the srgb box checked so my images were being converted to srgb on export. Never had any issues. Then very recently I decided to look into next gen images formats for my websites and started saving images to webp using the save as option. Once this, images were uploaded to social media and they looked really dull. I'm not aware of any check box on save as option. From your video it seems I need to convert the colour space to srgb just prior to opting to save as webp. Going to look into that now as I'd like to use the widest colour space possible during the editing process. I've read that it's also best to work in 16bit or 24 bit colour space for more aggressive edits to avoid banding and other artifacts. I'm assuming if you leave the conversion to srgb to the final stage you will avoid artifacts?

I believe that if you want to edit in a bigger spage than rgb, for instance adobe rgb, you will need a monitor that you can switch to adobe rgb, you have much more color space to manipulate the photo. then when finished convert it to rgb for web usage. On a normal monitor (mostly simple rgb) you can not see the adobe color range. From raw shot to edit in big color space (adobe rgb) with a monitor set to adobe rgb and then when finished convert to rgb for everyone to see.

No worries, it was definitely a big subject to cover. With the test prints, just look at the print and see what needs changing. I normally print one out and think about the exposure, contrast and saturation...make one change at a time and see if its better or worse... If its better, keep the change... If its worse try the opposite. After a few goes it should start to make sense and come together, and start to look like the shot you intended on printing. 👍

Hi. Awesome explanation. Congrats. I have a couple of questions. I use Dxo photolab 4 and have a Benq sw270c monitor with i1 display pro. I am going to calibrate it soon. I always shoot in raw and upload my images to social media. Also would like to send my favourite images to a lab. Is it possible to edit my photos with dxo and export them in lightroom to srgb and adobe rgb? Should i change the profile in the software to what i get after calibration? I mean icc or whatever? I am still learning this. Thank you for your time and effort.

If you shoot in RAW + JPEG stay with sRGB cuz you're gonna edit your RAW, not JPEG, files anyway and it's always good to have an ability to upload your sRGB photo anywhere.

Great video! Color has been driving me crazy for months! Finally calibrated my screen and it’s so much better! Question: if I edit in AdobeRGB and convert to sRGB, will it retain the vibrancy then? Hey Mike!, I do photography as a hobby, I’ll be going to college next year, so I needed a compact gaming laptop with good build quality, thus I chose the zephyrus g14. But in my region the 6800hs + 6700s costs about 1572$ (Much more than in US), it has fhd+ @ 144 hz display with 100% sRGB. Then there’s another version of it, with qhd+ @ 120 hz display with 100% dci p3 coverage. My main camera is the iPhone 14 Pro Max - therefore I’ll be shooting in Apple ProRAW at 4K and 8K HDR. Which one do you recommend? The dci p3 version is 300$ more expensive for rest specs are same! Except it has the AniMe matrix display (but that’s just a cool gimmic) do I need the higher resolution and the dci p3 100% or, is the fhd+ with 100% sRGB good enough for me? Edit: 07:30 oh! So that’s why when I try to edit some photos in the iPhone’s native editor, they get much brighter while editing? Such as sky photos 10:54 yea I’ll be posting those only on my Instagram mostly

Hi, very interesting explanations, this is my procedure, RAW-Lightroom editing sometimes export to photoshop (photoshop color settings adobe RGB1998 as Lightroom preference) Why work in PRO photo color space if the monitors only cover the adobeRGB space? If you have monitors with only 100% sRGB space you will not be able to see colors in the adobeRGB space and the images will always look the same when comparing them. Editing for the web is it better to see only the sRGB color space on the monitor or if you have the possibility to set adobeRGB space on the monitor? Thanks

Mike, another great video. I do have a question. I got a new laptop and it claims to be able to do 100% Adobe rgb on its display. But it also does rgb as a display. Would you suggest that if I know I'm going to print something to switch the display profile to Adobe. And for everything else to keep it in rgb? Hi Lorenzo, If you are going to be printing, I'd say switch it to adobeRGB ... just remember to switch it back before outputting to the web as that will display them as sRGB files and you might get those weird looking colours when uploading them to the web. Thanks for watching 😁👍

No worries, I'm glad I could help. I am predominantly a mac user so I couldn't recommend a PC laptop. Most of the top brands will have good screens but you will have to pay at least $1000 for a decent one. The best thing is to go into a city near you to try some of them out.

I am facing a strange issue thought I would check here. There is an image i edited in photoshop on Mac, exported as sRgb , jpeg. Now when i download the same jpeg image on windows machine, the image shows perfect color in the photo viewer. But when I open the same image in photoshop/ lightroom or Capture one or Affinity I see a sepia tone to it. What should I change in my windows machine, so that I get consistent color across application. Just bought a new surface book 3, and this issue is making me nuts.

Some comparisons between sRGB and ProPhotoRGB (arond11:10 - 11:15) may look the same on screen in the editor (Photoshop-Lightroom), but the histograms are still different, showing that both images are not really the same 🤔 Would these differences show when printing?

👍Mind-blowing info for mind-blowing topic, Mike! (Lame props, but they illustrate the point😁.) Didn’t know LAB is 3D model. Got intro to CMYK when I first did color printing in home darkroom - kept confusing CMYK with “CYA”, but that’s another story😂. Kidding aside, am still confused about RAW/color space settings in camera (especially w/file naming convention). Vid implies when shooting RAW, color space doesn’t matter. Yet, Sony offers choice and generates ARW files w/different name conventions - vid shows several ARW files, some w/underscore and some w/o. I use RAW w/AdobeRGB, thinking I’ll have the widest color range lattitude when editing in LR. I export to sRGB. Am I kidding myself, or would I be better off (print and screen display) to use RAW/sRGB in camera?

It does seem like there isn't any difference between the two in Raw...I've never noticed any difference whatsoever...👍

Great video! I'm shooting Sony camera raw and using Photoshop with Camera Raw (not Lightroom) the defaults seem to be sRGB, which is what one of my print houses requires. But I notice a change in brightness from Photoshop to Photoshop's Camera Raw. The Camera Raw is brighter and when I import back to Photoshop, the image is less bright and I often use a Screen blend mode in Photoshop to compensate as I save out .psd and .jpg files. But that doesn't seem right, right?

I have read that Imac monitors have DCI-P3 gamuts, A gamut that has similar size to Adobe RGB but has slight differences in color coverage. What happens when you print in Adobe RGB while using a monitor that only displays DCI-P3 gamut? Are the color inconsistencies very noticeable or bad?

Thank you for great explanation about color spaces. I am confused about the actual workflow. I usually don't use PS, I edit my photos in LR and export when I publish them on web or on Instagram. My monitor can display 100% of Adobe RGB and sRBG. I shoot in RAW. My Workflow is set the monitor to Adobe RGB, import photos, edit in ProPhoto although I cannot see the full spectrum due my monitor constraint. Then export it as Jpeg in sRGB. I check how the picture looks like in a web browser and I switch my monitor to sRGB setting. In certain occasion there is a difference and I have to get back to LR and make some new edits and redo the whole process. If my intention is only web or instagram publishing, would it make more sense to have the following workflow? Set the monitor to sRGB, import raw file into LR, edit it there. Then export as Jpeg in sRGB. In this case, I don't need to check if they look ok because what I see is what I have. I'd appreciate your help on this. Thanks.

Set your monitor to srgb if it's based on web-based publishings. Why bother Adobe RGB if you're not doing any printing at all?

Hi Omer, I have the exact the same problem. I edit my photos in Photoshop with monitor in AdobeRGB mode, export as jpeg in sRGB. But when I check these exported photos with monitor in sRGB model, I can see a small difference....I still don't know what caused this difference.. Have you fixed this issue?

what about for example, system profiles, I have an HP DreamColor laptop and it lets me choose from SRGB, Bt709, adobe1998 dcip3 and native, and every time i change a profile the luminance changes too for accuracy, and what i have been doing in the last years was to shoot on raw and edit them on lightroom with adobergb1998 and export them on adobetgb on export settings

The question I have is if you have a monitor where you can select between AdobeRGB and sRGB color spaces, which should you select for editing in Lightroom? I know when I switch from AdobeRGB to sRGB on my Dell U2413 monitor the colors of my photos in Lightroom are more muted so there must be a difference. I shoot in RAW, but when I export however I assign sRGB. It kind of makes sense to me that I should keep the monitor set to sRGB all the time so that my exported sRGB jpg files match what I see on the monitor while editing the photos.

Thanks for the video. But the 2D horseshoe diagram does not come from Lab color space. It comes from XYZ color space.

The best way would be to build up a relationship with them. Then over time you'll get to know some of the workers there and they might be able to help you...also when you use a place a lot, you'll get to know how they print your images and will then be able to make the changes to get the best out of them. What I don't understand is why has Adobe given us the ProPhoto RGB colour space when no current monitor can work with it? You are going to fiddle with image colours in the default colour space/gamut of your monitor and might (?) mess up an image that is in the ProPhoto RGB colour space.

Exactly...I suppose different parts of the process develop at different rates...it is annoying when we have all of this colour detail available but then if we want to show our images on most monitors or on line, this gets clipped quite a bit. That's why I pretty much work to the sRGB profile...then I'll get the most out of what I have to work with. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Hi Mike Could you tell me if it's normal for an exported adobe rgb jpg file to be a tad smaller than an exported srgb jpg file, both coming from the same raw file? I've noticed that the srgb is consistently larger, though only a little

As most websites have the sRGB colour space, I'd stick with that one. Then you shouldn't see any shift in your image colours. 👍

I tried to do exports to jpg in Adobe RGB from prophoto rgb in Photoshop and eventually gave up because it seems far too much complicated hassle. Exporting in Lightroom solved the problem

Hello! Could you, pkease, help me with my issue? I have a n sRGB monitor and I had been always used sRGB color space for all my photos. I also have a film scanner that doesn't have offer to save its scans in a raw format but it still uses internal raws. All raw converters that I know don't support this raw format but I can open them in Photoshop with some manipulation. What I found is that such raws don't look good (even positives). One day I tried to assign to such files an AdobeRGB profile and they started to look just right! Why is it so? My monitor can't show AdobeRGB colors. Also, how can I convert such scabs into sRGB without loosing their good appearence? Whenever I do it, my scans begin to look dull once again.

Thank you. Explained it well. Since I shoot RAW… I don’t care about SRGB or Adobe RGB.. unless I just shoot to direct to web.. (I don’t.. and if I did it would be with my iPhone 13 Pro. ;)
