Photojournalist Tommaso Protti captures deforestation of Brazil's Amazon

"A haunting portrait of crisis in the Amazon rainforest" is just one of the descriptions of a striking series of images taken by Italian photojournalist Tommaso Protti. They were taken during his sixth-month journey across the Brazilian Amazon. Protti, winner of the 2019 Carmignac Photojournalism award, tells us more about his photos, which depict the deforestation of the rainforest.

A wide variety of things can be done to help reduce the rate of deforestation. We can all do something to reduce our demand for wood. One thing that might help would be to keep our wooden furniture for as long as possible. If we replace it with brand new furniture too frequently, the demand for fresh wood will remain. Some of the wooden furniture in my home is over 30+ years old and still in good condition. I have no plans to replace it any time soon. Wooden furniture can last a long time if you take care of it.
