I just read a novel (fiction) where he suggested that EMR is the source of all paranormal activity. I thought EMR was electromagnetic RESONANCE not radiation. But at the end of the book the EMR didn't work because the person who starved himself to death and made sure his body stayed in a chamber below the chapel lined the entire room with lead - which explained why the paranormal activity continued even after the EMR reverter dissipated the existing EMR. The book was by Richard Matheson and is called 'Hell House.'

Remember Hz = cycles/sec. When you divide both sides of the equation E=hf by "cycle" you get E/cycle = joules. What you are calling a photon is just the energy per cycle in the light wave. It may sometimes be useful to use the particle model of light, but it does not mean that light is a particle. A photon is not a packet of light, it is the energy per cycle in a light wave. It is the electron that is a quantum of single charge and mass. The photoelectric effect shows the energy/cycle of a light wave needed to free electrons.

I know someone who has a Ph.D in this stuff, and he's a medicinal chemist, microbiologist. He did his thesis on Photon energy and I didn't understand a word of it. Even though I'm a paramedic, and he used to try to bs me into believing that what I do is as important as he does. I just didn't happen to make more than $50/hour DOing it. In fact people want minimum wage to be higher than a paramedic's starting salary. Paramedic's don't start at $15/hour, so if minimum wage becomes that they'll be making more than we start with.

If matter causes the electromagnetic spectrum, then maybe light itself isn't limited to these discrete quanta, it's merely that matter and their discrete jumps in energy levels are limited. When (an) electron(s) is/are excited to a higher energy state, it/they will always fall back down to their resting state, releasing that specific quanta of energy as a photon.

Could we have an emergent future unfolding photon by photon with each new photon electron coupling or dipole moment relative to the atoms of the periodic table therefore unfolding relative to our own actions? This is the idea that this theory is promoting that the wave particle duality of light and matter in the form of electrons is forming a blank canvas that we can choose how we interact with forming a future of our own choice relative to the energy and momentum of our actions.

Looking over my notes, I came up with this new picture of a photon particle wave. Bit difficult to describe in words, but it is based on photons that can create positron electron pairs. Photons are a series of particles like stepping stones. At each stop the photon shoots out a positron crest in one direction, and an electron trough in the other. This LOOKS like a single complete wavelength. But it really is a photon turning into an electron positron pair, each springing out of the photon in the opposite direction of the other. So each wavelength is, photon in the node of the wave position, with a negative electron trough on one side and a positive positron crest on the other. Further the node between two wavelengths may be where an electron trough meets a positron crest = annihilation. This process would all be as quick as a quantum jump.

If that's the case, then does that also mean that if a solar panel is 50% efficient, it absorbs all the energy of 50% of the photons hitting it in let's say an hour and nothing from the other half?

@1203scott
@1203scott 5 жыл бұрын
But the function used to describe the behaviour of these "photons" are described as smooth and continuous waves. Either they really are particles and being directed thru a force of somekind or light is not made out of photons and there is another reason why only certain quanta can be absorbed. It all sounds to me like there is an underlying structure to spacetime guiding it all and we have yet to realize it. Photons are units of energy but when u say "look at it up close" it doesnt make sense because to see a photon at least 9 of them have to hit ur retina in the 1st place. I for one have an idea that light is a part of the structure of 4d spactime and not moving at all. It is massless so why wudnt it just be following the path of time. We are moving thru 4d spacetime and interacting with it so it appears to move at the rate that time does

Einstein method is crystal cear to me E - Eo = h f, an electron escapes with the energy h f, the simple slope is THE h, therefore a photon itself is quantized. but in planck method... i really have no idea... the impression i got from Einstein's words on planck was like, planck method was wrong, the derivation was wrong. just only the result was correct. i even tried to understand the vibrational modes of the molecules of the walls of the cavity in black body. if i use the bose-einstein statistics then i may be... but it is hard to see where the quntization is started

I disagree that photons can only deposit energy in chunks..... namely, I'm referring to Compton scattering. In Compton scattering, a photon interacts with a bound electron and deposits the exact amount of energy required to free it. If the photon has more energy than is needed to free the electron, a scattered photon will result that has less energy than the original photon.

Readers who like Physics. Can you understand this post on the concept of Dimp, the dimensionlesspoint, I am struggling to explain it clearly. This from the next Musea. 1. DIMP stands for dimensionless point - DIM-ensionless P-oint . This is a single point outside the universe, that contains all light! This is a challenging concept and difficult to even imagine. How can anything, let alone all that, be in a point without dimensions? But it's based on what we know now. When you understand my single concept of DIMP, the rest of these physics ideas fall into place. So I will try to explain it in a couple of ways. Read, this section carefully! Dimp or the dimensionless point is a single point that contains all PHOTONS. (For visual purposes, think of photons as little pieces of light.) That means Dimp contains all ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY in a single dimensionless point. That means all light is in a single point, a point that doesn't have four dimensions, or three, or two, or even one! Pauli's Exclusion Principle is a clue. It says all photons ( a type of boson), can be in one point while their counterpart, fermions, cannot. Remember a PHOTON DOES NOT OCCUPY SPACE! There is no limit to how many can occupy the same quantum state. Photons, all of them, can be in a single point! By definition we know that photons are outside of time and distance. Infinite time dilation (no time) goes hand in hand with infinite length contraction (no distance to the destination). Because a photon is outside time, it is eternal. Because a photon is outside distance, there is no distance between any two photons. They are all together in an eternal point. They share a dimensionless point! That means all light is in one point. If there is no distance than photons are everywhere at once - or everywhere at once and back! That means that the photons in the singularity that started the big bang and our entire universe, are here now today, and will be here forever in the future. Here's an official quote from Physics org: From the perspective of a photon, there is no such thing as time... It doesn't experience distance either. My idea that all light energy is gathered in Dimp, a single dimensionless point, eternal and outside of space-time, is not easy to comprehend. Let's try this visual analogy. Look at photons, not as individual particles or waves of light, but as a quantum ENERGY FIELD that is everywhere at once, a BLANKET OF LIGHT that surrounds everything in the universe and is in every part of space time at the same time. Still with me? Because Dimp is eternal and outside time; that means Dimp is these things: 1. Here before the Big Bang, during the Big Bang, and here long after this universe will have ended. A vast reservoir of all energy. And our universe, where there is space and time, is a small subset of Dimp, just as an ember is a small subset of a massive bonfire. Dimp was the singularity, the dimensionless point, that the Big Bang exploded out of. That means Dimp is separate from, not only time and distance, but gravity, mass, space, you name it! There is no acceleration in DIMP therefore no gravity!. There is no expansion in DIMP and no charge. Further the virtually endless amount of energy in Dimp never changes. That is some weird point! Dimp, the dimensionless point concept seems to explain all the following separate concepts; COSMOLOGICAL CONSTANT, ZERO POINT ENERGY, VIRTUAL PARTICLES, ENTANGLEMENT OR 'SPOOKY ACTION AT A DISTANCE', AND VACUUM ENERGY. Dimp also means the electromagnetic force and force of gravity (see later) are not connected. They are separate and can't be unified. The simplest way to explain Dimp is to start by saying, there are TWO UNIVERSES. THE FIRST UNIVERSE is DIMP, the dimensionless point, or the universe of photons, light, and energy, where everything that is, goes the "speed of light". THE SECOND UNIVERSE is SPACE - TIME where everything goes slower than the speed of light. This is the universe of everything that is - BUT photons. Nothing in Dimp goes slower than the speed of light. Nothing in the universe goes the speed of light. Does that help clarify? BUT WAIT, it gets more strange... The problem is that to have a "speed of light" one has to have both time and distance. But a photon from it's point of view is outside of both time and distance. From our space-time point of view it looks like photons are going a set distance in a set time, but that is our illusion, not their fact. So "speed of light" is a misnomer. More about this puzzle later. . Physics often uncovers a dark zone of unexplained phenomenon. Dimp may help explain those dark zones including: 1. The singularity where the big bang began. 2. Dimp, the dimensionless point of all photons, all light. 3. The dark area in an atom during a quantum jump where the electron instantly jumps over, when it jumps from shell to shell. " Everything in the quantum mechanical universe ... happens in quantum leaps. A quantum leap is a discontinuous transit between quantum states - an electron jumps instantly into another energy level... There is no in between state and it doesn't take anytime for the leap to occur." Moring. 4. The empty zone in an atom where the electron orbital is not. 5. The Two Slit Experiment black bands where no particles/waves land. 6. The nodes of waves where the particle probability is zero. 7. When two mirror image waves collide, constructive interference occurs which annihilates both waves, and turns them into pure energy. Dimp is that pure energy. 8. Virtual Particles where particle A and Particle B pop up out of the void, then come together and there is total annihilation. 9. Quantum tunneling? The space between when Particle A disappears on one side and materializes on the other side. 10. Entangled particles where A and B are strangely and instantly connected no matter the distance between them. 11. Force carriers. 12. the infinities that renormalization tries to fix. With Dimp they are correct as is. 13. Wheeler's Great Smoky Dragon analogy, where A is the head of the dragon, B is the tail of the dragon and the area between is smoke. 14. The 120 orders of magnitude of the vacuum energy density or cosmological constant. 15. Non locality may also be explained by Dimp which is outside of time and space. Where is Dimp? Everywhere that there is vacuum energy or space, or everywhere!That's because any surface not at absolute zero emits photons, and absolute zero can't be reached. It"s both outside and inside space time! But wait - more weirdness: PHOTONS DON'T GO ANYWHERE. Remember the speed of light problem? Photons do not move out of dimp! If they did they would have time and distance, which they do not! Photons pop out of Dimp. They are created out of Dimp and return to Dimp. Text books say, the only interactions a photon has, are to be created or destroyed. We see a photon being created or destroyed, but nothing in between! Through pair conversion they send MESSENGERS: Electron / Positron pairs as the energy to do the work . That suggests that electrons and positrons are vehicles for photon energy! That means when a photon pops up in our universe, it does so only as an electron / positron pair! We know that as an object approaches the speed of light it: becomes heavier and approaches infinite mass, (Infinite mass is also infinite energy, E=MC2). It contracts in length, and time slows. Could that object keep going faster, it would reach the speed of light and be outside of time and be eternal. SO if mass could go the speed of light (and it can only approach it) it would be infinite energy with no length in a single dimensionless point, outside of time! Sound familiar? That is DIMP! Totally confused? Take a break and try this visual exercise: The light from all stars shine out in every direction with eternal photons that are everywhere all at once. Look, a web of photons connect all space and all time, now and forever - a net of light!

Maxwells original idea about a self sustaining chain-reaction of EM fields (which correctly predicted the speed of light) would result in discrete chunks of energy because the lightsource will need a minimum amount of energy to trigger the reaction. Once that level is reached and the chain reaction begins, the process RESETS resulting in discrete chunks. If we assume there is an Aether medium, then Planks constant must come from the smallest structure of our local aether, (but the aether could have the same scale everywhere).

Gamma and X-ray radiation correspond to high-frequency (short wavelength) electro-magnetic radiation. Visible or normal light, is lower-frequency (longer wavelength) radiation. And they are also photons of electro-magnetic radiation. They must therefore be, lower energy photons.

Heat flows over/ through atoms, ocean waves flow over water molecules, don't ask me about "gravity" waves...I think it may be a scam. Earthquake waves flow through rock and soil. Voltage/current flows via electrons around atoms...typical anyway. My point is, in my physical world all energy seems to flow over particles....ocean water "particles", air "particles", steel particles, earth particles... Why am I wasting my time writing this here? 5:55 great calculation. What's amazing is that human eyes are able to distinguish light down near 5-10 photons, so we were designed or evolved (yes, I can handle both) to see down nearly to e-18J of energy.

Until you realize that field theory is a better explanation, that empty space has properties of electrical impedance, capacitance, inductance, etc., and then matter and waves can be viewed as perturbations in this.. uh oh.... back to "ether", but it seems to actually explain a lot since "dark matter" theory is largely going away. ;) Yes, photons are quantized energy, buuut...

I disagree with the idea that we can't envision this. We can if we make one assumption about quantum foam. That assumption is that each nodule within the foam is a discrete size - say one planck length. If this is true, then what we perceive as light is the energy from the radiant source traveling through the quantum foam. This one assumption answers the particle/wave question. The assumption has been that individual photons travel, but I believe that is incorrect. What we measure is the energy packet of a photon as it travels through the quantum foam. That energy travels as a wave to its destination. What we measure is the actual quantum foam nodule's motion as it either waves along with its neighbors or moves as an individual or cluster. On a larger scale, we could say the same thing about sound. Given an incentive, we could measure sound as both a particle and a wave. It travels as a wave through the atmosphere which is made of particles. Discretely sized quantum foam nodules could also describe gravitational forces. The negative space between nodules would increase the closer it came to an energy radiating source. As that negative space increases, it could draw other objects toward itself.

Photons are massless particles, so they kind of have neither (given that KE = 1/2MV^2 and PE = MGH). With that in mind, individual photon energy is actually given by the equation E = (hc)/λ (where h is Planck's constant, c is the speed of light, and lambda is wavelength). The concept of energy still stands from the classical viewpoint you're taking (i.e. the ability to do work), but the terminology and conceptualization breaks down (there is a sort of classical-quantum boundary that exists where these classical concepts become bad at describing the ultra-micro, and vice versa). Thus, light has energy, the ability to do work, in the same way that something with lots of kinetic or potential energy does, it just doesn't really fit into either category.

But why do we talk about what a photon looks like in the first place. All we ever measure is the interaction. We never see a photon so why try to visualize it? Energy jumps from one point to another in discreet units instantaneously from the lights pont of view. All this wave / particle path discussion is really just the underlying math describing the probability of an interaction.

But the maths represents the geometry of a physical process of energy exchange. visualizing the photon as a spherical oscillation could give us a greater understanding!!!

The sun emits light in a spectrum of energy, most of it being in the visible spectrum (think about it... our eyes developed using the sun's light so our eyes are able to use most of what the sun provides is). The sun does emit some light in the higher energies... UV light and higher. Light at this energy has enough energy to break molecular bonds which create free radicals and other compounds that can be harmful to cells (specifically the DNA). Most visible light does not have this property (blue light actually does in some cases).

Why is h the smallest energy possible? What happens if E = hf and f = 0.5hz? do you people really understand this or just repeating whatever textbook is telling you?
@naeem_bari
@naeem_bari 8 жыл бұрын
+Eugene Liu h is a constant, not the smallest energy possible. Your 0.5Hz is the same as 5 x (10 to the power -1). So a photon of light of 0.5Hz frequency would be h x f = 6.626 x (10 to power -34) x 5 x (10 to the power -1) = 33.13 x (10 to the power -35) = 3.313 x (10 to the power -34) joules. At least that's how I understand it, might be wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@schmetterling4477
@schmetterling4477 2 жыл бұрын
We don't. It's a fundamental observation. If we already know the structure of quantum field theory, then it drops out as one possible dispersion relation (for massless fields), but that comes at the question from the wrong end... where we know the entire theory, already. Historically this observation came first and the theory was created around it.

@@schmetterling4477 Hi. Obviously you understand all these ideas quite well. I’ve been studying and I would like to know if you think Einstein’s ideas (quantum theory) were correct, or if you think those who developed quantum mechanics (from the mid 1920s onwards) knew better. And, exactly WHY, please. Did Max Planck come up with (not derive) the E = h f equation ? Or was it already known before he tried to figure out blackbody radiation ? Thanks, 😘

@sneakypress
@sneakypress 2 жыл бұрын
@@schmetterling4477 Firstly, despite what many of the physicists say, there is a difference between the original ideas, that is ‘the quantum theory’ and what you are referring to (by mentioning Heisenberg and Schrodinger) which is called ‘quantum mechanics’. No, Einstein did not develop ‘quantum theory’, (in the sense that it was all his ideas), and yes, he explained the photo-electric effect. But Einstein did contribute to the development of the ‘quantum theory’ along with Max Planck who is called the founder of the ‘quantum theory’; before any of the others(you mentioned), were involved. THIS IS ONE REASON WHY EINSTEIN WAS NEVER REALLY HAPPY WITH QUANTUM MECHANICS (after about the mid 1920s). Bohr made major contributions, as he was involved in the transition between ‘quantum theory’ and the later, ‘quantum mechanics’ .
