I have used old-style painting and sketching plugins for several years to "rescue" images that are technically challenged (usually the subject is too out of focus). This has produced on-the-wall images of some of my long deceased dogs when the images that best captured their character were technically poor. Partially revealing underlying layers (30-50%) often helps eyes or teeth.

AMAZING find. Wow. Since the holidays, have a new MBP Max machine, been trying many local AI models to do image2image just to get this effect... and failing miserably. Here you did it in two steps. I still and processing why it works this way. Guessing 30% gray in brightness (in the HSB section, not blue, btw)... is the same as telling Stable Diffusion, or another model, use 70% of the base image as input... but, without needing to analyze it and cross your fingers for the insane number of technical settings. Amazing, amazing find.

Hi Brian, thanks so much for doing this. I wouldn't have guessed to try this. I just took a flower photo, followed your instruction for oil painting and got a result I really like on the first try. Interesting video. I had a quick play with the idea. Your obvious problem is the 1024 px generating limit. I made a copy of the image in a new window. I reduced the image to 1024 px along the longest edge - then ran the generative fill. I used the super zoom filter to enlarge this smaller image - back to approx the original size in a new doc. I dragged the super-zoomed image back to the original and adjusted the size to match. I then compared this with a generated oil paint image from the original. I think it looks better - but it's difficult to compare because PS never generates the same image twice. If you have the time give it a do and let us know what you think.
@TheSmartWoodshop

After watching your video, I gave this a go with mixed results. It doesn't work well with people and does not have much control over the brush style. I did try backing off the opacity and using a mask to tune it a bit. The Oil Paint filter in PS is superior at this point, but I can see the potential.

Ansel Adams spent more time in the darkroom than he did actually taking photos. Can you imagine the smile on Adams’ face looking at Photoshop’s latest “darkroom” endeavor? One word: WOW!

Exactly! I keep telling people this. For some reason, people seem to think that just because Ansel wasn’t alive when this technology was available, he wouldn’t give it a shot. I firmly believe that he’d love to give it a whirl and would probably get some enjoyment out of it. It’s not like anyone is saying that we should use this to replace the act of taking photos or creating oil paintings. It’s just a cool tech to experiment with.

This is amazing! The only thing to be aware of is the resolution constraint that generative fill has. The new content it generates is limited to 1024 px on the longest side. So if your original image is high resolution and you use generative fill on the whole thing the quality will go down. Hopefully Adobe fixes this soon.
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
Yup, that's a good reminder and I meant to bring that up when I zoomed in on the canvas texture of the oil painting example. I would never have known this was possible if I hadn't watched this video. Not sure how much I'll use it, but it's a fun tool to have in the box. One of my favorite things to do with GF is to start with a completely blank canvas, select all and generate with no prompt. It's interesting what it can come up with. I've gotten a few really weird things, but sometimes it's actually fairly realistic looking. Mainly just landscapes, but had a cityscape and a few more detail oriented images too.
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash Жыл бұрын
Turning photos into paintings using GF has becoming addicting for me because I know that my mom will love some of these painting conversions. So, it has become sort of a challenge for me to find photos that will look great as oil or watercolor paintings. The next step will be to see how they look when I print them, especially with the canvas texture filter applied. And I’m with you, sometimes I just love starting with a blank canvas and letting GF do it’s things. It still has room to improve, but we’re in Wild West territory now.

I don't have anything against AI in editing, I like noise reduction in Lightroom and Lightroom Classic, but if image is simply too noisy it can be weird, bendy wavy look. But if not crazy noisy it works superbly without changing the shapes of the object. So if using making reviews of stuff, posting pics, you need to shoot a pic not too noisy, if using AI de noise, or not use it. Just make sure you don't make the product look worse than it actually is, just removing the noise nothing else. Noisier it is, harder it is to fix. So make sure to use right settings in camera.

There is one aspect to all of this and that is when someone does this but then DOES NOT 'put the ingredients on the box' and then tries to claim to be a brilliant physical painter artist. So it is an ethical thing. All someone needs to do is put 'Digitally Created Art'. The 'client' can go and decide to buy or not after than - this is irrelevant whether you are actually selling or not. It is only about integrity and honesty. It will not be long before we start hearing of fairies at the bottom of the garden being claimed as true! Yup it really has been happening for many many years... there is nought thaas new but the method. Very good video.

Yeah, I believe that resolution limit applies to any generative fill. You can see the resolution fall apart a bit when I zoom in to see the canvas texture, but it’s not remotely noticeable at fit-to-screen view. Still, I wouldn’t rely on it if you intend to make a large-scale print…. At least not until Adobe ups the output resolution (which will hopefully happen in the future).

I then still have to play around with the layer opacity in the layers box. I'm not sure what's going on.... thanks

Oh wow. I don’t recall running into that issue, but I’ll play around with my own settings to see if I can replicate.

@@brianmatiash thanks Brian, I think I solved it. I was throwing in an extra step somewhere of select all. It works well if you stick with the sequence. I also play around with the opacity. painting over the mask etc FYI, something I haven't seen yet on youtube, I'm using AI Gen to make picture frames, by following the "extend background " selections and typing "antique picture frame" etc...... you might want to try a video. tx again

@@turkrich That's an awesome idea! I'll definitely play around with expanding the canvas to serve as an art frame. Thank you for sharing that great idea!

Brian, I don't know why but I get the same issue with seeing the "marching ants" when I deselect the layer with the quick mask and I have to hit "invert selection" to get the painting that's not totally opaque.....not sure what is happening??? any idea??? I am still working on your process though!! THANKA@@brianmatiash

It worked, but the painting strokes were so big it destroyed the picture. I tried fine brush etc, but to no avail. I re generated it a lot but always it was too big a stroke patterns unlike your picture.

It's not the "blue channel", it's the brightness channel. :)

Just a quick comment, it's not 30% on the blue channel but rather 30% on the brightness channel (I don't think it allows you to generate just blue/red/green)

That’s right. I mentioned it in a few other comments that I misspoke because I was thinking of the RGB values.

Maybe this technology will have a future. But right now I’m not convinced that it can really emulate oil painting or anything related to it.

B=30% was brightness of HSB, not Blue Channel. Can do much better image to painting/sketch etc by using Corel Painter program....including AI effects

Right, I already mentioned it in another comment that I was looking at the RGB values when I spoke. It’s an honest mistake. And if you prefer Corel Painter, then have a blast with it. I use PS and it has suited me just fine all these years.

Glad you enjoyed the vid and excellent question. I was going to cover that in the video and totally forgot to. In my experiments, 30% was the sweet spot for Generative Fill to properly apply the effect to the entire photo. In situations where I tried 50%, for example, Generative Fill didn't factor in the image at all and just generated art from nothing (as it did when I just clicked "Select All" and ran it. 30% has never failed me in all of my attempts, so that's why I went with it.

Sweet! I hope you are happy with the results. I'm not gonna lie - it's kind of addicting. I also will do some more research to see why 30% seems to be the magic number for the quick mask mode selection.

Looks like I need to play with this! You do however make the same slip of the tongue a couple of times - when creating the 30% mask I believe that B stands for brightness, not blue. (H = hue. S = saturation. B = brightness.)
