I have been using Photoshop since it was first introduced, but have never used color grading. In my old age now (85) I like learning new techniques.

Thanks for the great tutorial, Dave! I haven't tried libraries yet, but I will now. Just an alternative suggestion. I've tried different blend modes for color grading with gradient maps, and the one I love the most is Hard Mix with a very low fill (often in the 1-5% range). For me it's the most pleasing image, and seems to preserve contrast much better than Soft Light.

I must be doing something wrong. I followed the video and made a gradient map on the photo I wanted to put the gradient on. It went to black and white as in the video but when I brought up the gradients and clicked on the gradient I had made, nothing happened. The photo remained in black and white. I tried it with some of the other preset gradients and still nothing.

That is weird. Are you using the Gradient Map Adjustment layer?

@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Yes I used the gradient map adjustment layer and it made the photo black and white but when I clicked on the gradient I created nothing happened. I'll try and redo it again but the only way I can make the gradient happen is by dragging the mouse from one end of the photo to the other but that doesn't give it any colour it only makes the photo lighter. I really don't get it. I have a monthly subscription to photoshop and it just updated again this morning so I'm at a loss for what I'm doing wrong.

I am extracting the colors from one image, as a color gradient, to use to color grade another image and not to necessarily match the colors exactly but to stylize my image.
