It would make sense that both would perform roughly the same in terms of image quality, as they both likely use the same processing engine, it's just that one may have more customization/features/options that the other and that's where Topaz will differentiate them. It wouldn't make much sense for them to use different algorithms for each program as that increases their cost and the cost of the product to the consumer. I think Adobe has sort of done the same thing with full blown Photoshop versus Photoshop Elements (Elements has the same engine as Photoshop, but some features are not available or they are simplified and certain fine-tuning options may not be available.).

Great video Dave but I do have a question...I just watched your video on sending your photo from LR to PS as a smart object then sending to Camera Raw to do your Denoise then go back to PS...Maybe I am missing a step, but when I go back into PS I am not able to make any minor adjustments or add a canvas border. Please advise. Again thank you. Diane
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekellyКүн бұрын
After you denoise in Camera Raw and return to Photoshop, make sure you double-click the smart object thumbnail in the Layers panel. This will reopen the image in Camera Raw, allowing you to make further adjustments. For adding a canvas border, you can do this directly in Photoshop by going to Image > Canvas Size. Hope this helps!

Hi Dave, Thanks for all the great content. I'm learning so much. I have a question, forgive me if it's been covered and I just haven't come across it yet. I noticed that the photo we are working on are in TIFF format, is there a reason for this over Jpeg? Keep up the great work, thanks.
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekellyКүн бұрын
TIFF is great for high-quality images and editing because it doesn't lose any data. JPEG is better for everyday use and sharing since the files are smaller. So, if you need top-notch quality, go with TIFF. For convenience and smaller file sizes, JPEG is the way to go.

Another great TK Friday and a lovely image with which to follow along. Having spent that last two weeks working up new Actions. it would have been nice to see them integrated into the current workflow. I understand that some like the long handed method but why create Actions if you are not going to use them? I find that using them at the outset speed up 'Stetting up for Success' and gives more time to the creative aspect of post-processing. I now use opening Actions on almost all my images and love the simplicity. Again, thanks to another great TK Friday.

Dave, the Dimmer cation is great for creating a vignette. The Paint Contrast action is great for adding contrast rather than using Burn or Dodge.
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly5 күн бұрын
Keith, are you referring to the Spotlight/Dimmer TK action? I agree that the Paint Contrast Action is also a good option. However, I do prefer the control I get with the Dodge and Burn Tools, and I'm so accustomed to using them.
@keithsimpson86763 күн бұрын
@ yes Dave. Spotlight / Dimmer. It’s worth giving it a try. If it’s not strong enough, duplicate the layer. Try adding different strength Dimmers to the edges/corners for a custom vignette. It also works well to darken the top and bottom edges as you sometimes do to “close off the image”.

No separate DNG file needed, yes but you still need to create a tiff file, so to my mind you still have extra files to clutter your file storage? Or did I miss something?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly5 күн бұрын
Yes, whenever you work in Photoshop, you'll inevitably end up with a TIFF or PSD file. This is an inherent part of the Lightroom/Photoshop workflow.

Hi Dave, thank you very much for this today more classical TK9 approach. 👍 😀 This photograph is very well exposed and editing it was a pleasure. For more complex stuff e.g. color dodge, luminosity painting, split toning I like to make this with a little help of some actions. TK9 is a great wide world. wish you all a nice weekend, Daniel ❤

Very nice edit Dave. I really like the convenience of limiting to a tone the effect of the Make it Glow Action by applying a Blend If setting, instead of doing it via a tone mask.

Nice image and great tutorial Dave. I like the "manual" edits, without actions for a change. Question: I've always been curious as to why you always chose the black-to-white linear gradient and then reverse it. Why not chose the white-to-black gradient from the start? Any particular reason? Thank you!
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly5 күн бұрын
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Your comment truly sparked my curiosity. I conducted some experimentation and discovered that we can save even more time by omitting the "Basic Groups" step, thanks to the new (Multiply Brush) feature. With the Multiply Brush, you're always set up with a white brush. As long as the "Reverse" option is unchecked, you only need to ensure that you're using the (Linear Gradient) tool. I'll definitely be changing my workflow as a result of your comment!

Could we extend this further to do some of our TK9 edits in photoshop while continuing to using Lightroom as our main editor? Is it even worth the effort? I would be interested in your thoughts.
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly7 күн бұрын
Absolutely Sam. It works well with my TK Friday Full Edit Workflow.
@samelogio74417 күн бұрын
@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Could you actually demonstrate that in one of your TK Friday sessions. You often use "Edit In Photoshop" rather than a "smart object" when starting your edits from Lightroom.
@samelogio7441Күн бұрын
Hi Dave, I was thinking about this workflow and would like to propose a different and simpler approach. Open your RAW file with Photoshop. It will open in ACR first because it is a RAW file. Then, perform the noise clean up as you did. Then, save the ACR file as a Smart Object. You will then have the ACR Smart Object as a layer in PS. From there you can add more layers with any other edits, including TK9. If you need the original ACR edits then just double click on the ACR Smart Object layer and you now have access to the original ACR edits. This seems a whole lot simpler than starting from LR. I would be interested in your thoughts.

Hi Dave, thanks a lot for this video. I'm all in with the TK9 Buttonclick Actions, so it is very nice that you show us, some other aspects of editing. LRC is part of my purchase, but I don't use it, too much fiddling with the catalogs. For me it is Bridge + ACR + PS. I appreciate this new pro denoising in ACR, because unfortunately Topaz don't developed their stand alones apps anymore, except G-AI. And for Foto-AI I bought in a bundle last year with Denoise and Sharpen, now they wanted an update purchase. In the end of the day I trust Adobe and the good old PS since 1993. 😄 Can't await the next TK Friday, cheers, Daniel, Berlin.

Love your edits! When you finish an edit and are ready to save it back to Lightroom, what final step should we take in our Layers Panel to close it out…Flatten or what?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly7 күн бұрын
Thanks, Jonathan! If you have enough storage, I recommend saving the image with the layers intact. Just in case you need to make some tweaks to your final result later on. I used to always flatten my images in the past, but I now regret it.

With a small sample size, Adaptive is the clear winner for me. The shadow detail it brings out is the difference.

I think that's underwhelming and probably the reactions a little exaggerated. The HDR only applies a like preset for some saturation, contrast, sharpness and probably some brightness. I mean, sure it does the job, and it does a great job. But not a $200 job imo.

Hi Dave, when I click on solid color the picture gets completely gray, what's wrong with my setting? Thanks
@datstheone19 күн бұрын
Are you adding the solid colour from the Multi-Mask panel or standard Photoshop adjustments? Multi-Mask method automatically sets blend mode to Soft Light so colour blends with image. If you use standard Photoshop adjustment then it is created in Normal blend mode so you do get a solid colour over the image. Grey might be the default or the last colour you used.
