Paste an Image into a Layer Mask in Photoshop

you SAVED my precious hours, thank you so so much! did the stupid way of deleting the actual layer instead of using a mask, so halfway through i decided to fix my method, but i was stuck for so long looking on how to use the edited layer to be used as a mask.. thank you so much, your explanation is very quick and yet clear
