PHP vs Java: what is better?

Choosing one between them is always a source of confusion among developers. There are many factors that they consider when deciding on one of them. Both have unique characteristics and strengths.
For complex projects or applications that require a wider range of integrations and functionalities, Java is the programming language of choice. PHP, on the other hand, is a scripting language that is commonly used in smaller applications.
Java is thought to be more secure than PHP. It's because PHP uses other integrations and frameworks to help with security. And Java is well documented, which makes installing and testing easier. The language is more flexible and effective than PHP because it can interact with a variety of hardware and devices.
When the speed of coding is considered, PHP has the upper hand because its latest versions have speeded up the coding process. But in terms of performance and stability, Java wins the battle. And it is the most popular one and the choice of most of the developers. If the cost of development is your priority, then go for PHP.

do developers tend to learn both java and php? or should developers spend time learning only one of those languages?

Usually developers will focus on either Java or PHP. It is better to focus on one technology and become an expert in it. In PHP for example there also other frameworks like Laravel or Symfony, and also a lot of other interesting technologies like WordPress, Drupal, TYPO3, etc. In Java there are a lot of opportunities for working on large backend applications in large multinational companies. It depends on what you like more. PHP for example is used in small to medium sized web projects. Java can be used in large projects, with large teams.

A bank would never use PHP, they would wipeout all the money. So i go for Java.

For bigger applications Java is the right solution. But I guess for small to medium sized applications PHP can be the right choice. Even for bigger applications PHP can be used, but of course for applications like banks or other highly secure software, Java is better.
