One thing in dota2 was a tournament called "midas mode". In summary, every team has X amount of points. All heroes cost the same points to draft. Everytime a hero is picked, it adds Y to the cost Everytime a hero is not picked, it removes cost. Therefore you would have to "ration" your picks on meta heroes, because it will cost a lot of your draft points. Additionally, banned popular heroes cost more points Could be cool one off tournament idea.

@dumpsterplayer270012 күн бұрын
@ it's true pro hero is way higher in dota, but that just makes it better? the "meta" picks would cost even more because its harder to substitute them. You don't have to copy EVERYTHING from an idea, just the good bits, riot games would know, that's all they do

That way, a champ that is always picked first game in fearless still has 100% presence, because the rest of the games it wasn't even pickable. That'd be a better measure to continue your pro balancing strategy.

Fearless draft finally has me excited to watch Esports again. This shouldve been done about 7 years ago or so, but whatever. Im just so happy it is finally here. It will also finally show pros that are genuinely better at the same game that the rest of us play, because Esports LoL has always felt like a completely different game because of how set in stone the meta usually is; it basicly being a handshake agreement between about 20 champions or so. Maybe flexible players with some exciting pocket picks might actually find their way to the top now

@@raphaels33 it's not so much about "forcing diversity" per se. One of the main issue pros have, as Phreak implied at start of the video, is that proplayers don't really feel the need to even bother learning more chars because time investment in a char you will play *maybe* once per season is wasted whereas practicing champions that are "good always" is much better spent. Remember that playing a champion at soloqueue level (even master/gm) is way different than playing a champion in proplay, both due to the amount of economy you get (don't ever dream to get more than 3 items as a jungler or even more than 1 as a support in proplay f.e., and at same time you don't exactly get the entire map fed to you as adc in soloqueue either). More varied drafts also encourage pros to actually pick/learn more of the "viable but not top dog" champions, because the chance they will have to use them in series is much more real and they don't want to end up literally having their entire champion pool unavailable in game 5.

@Phreak I've had an idea for awhile that is basically a combination of two of your unrepresented pitches. I think it would be really cool if there was a pre-match, blind ban phase that also has a few protection picks. Both teams would submit a list of 5 bans and 2 (maybe 3?) protected picks before the match begins. The 5 bans apply ONLY to the other team, and they apply for the whole match, regardless of series length. The protected picks are protected only from the blind, pre-match bans. Protected picks can still be picked/banned by either team as usual in the normal draft phase of each game. I think there are a lot of benefits to this approach. Exciting mind-game storylines can emerge. Like maybe you don't actually protect a famous pocket pick that a player on your team has, because you know the other team will expect you to protect it, so you think they won't waste a ban on something they "know" you're going to protect. Anothe benefit is that no time is added to pick-bans, because it's all done pre-match. And it gives another interesting thing to cover on the broadcast while a match is being set up. Also because it is pre-match, both teams have time to strategize around the results of the blind ban phase, resulting in more interesting strategic choices in the normal drafts that follow. I am very excited about fearless draft though. It will give even more champion diversity than the above idea would. But if more draft tinkering is done in the future, I hope you will consider adding something like that.

I'm so happy about fearless, this game has needed this so badly for so long. My advice would be to keep it as simple as possible, I feel like viewers will appreciate the variety and players will warm up to it, and that's how the game should be. More importantly, I want to say that I'm so far loving Swiftplay, the thing is that I still know when I'm outplaying my opponents, (or when my opponent is outplaying me) but it doesn't feel like the game is just over because one team or my lane opponent got an early lead. So I personally wouldn't mind if you guys started thinking about moving some swiftplay mechanics over to ranked, at some point as the data comes in. And I also want to thank you personally, as well as Riot for looking in that direction at least, it's been a major frustration point for me for a long while now and I'm really grateful you guys seem to be on the same page, more or less.

Wow. Great video. I had so many question that were all addressed. And recently I've also started to really dislike bans. I agree with the sentiment that it's a cheap way to deal with picks. It stifles a constantly evolving meta if teams don't have to counter a champ. But then you can't experiment, because if you get a counter then it just gets banned instead. However, I still had one question that wasn't presented in this video: Instead of Fearless, what if you just locked a team from a draft they won on? If they win on certain champions, those champs are locked out for them for the rest of the series. Instead of being locked out for everyone, win or lose.

Let me just pause at 0:20 and give an answer the entire community has had for years: Because it's interesting. It's fun to watch. Anyone can be a OTP and climb to Challenger rank 1 with enough time. We expect our pros to be better. To know a more diverse champion pool, to know match-ups, to know different item builds to face different situations that arise from a more diverse pool of possible enemy comps. And NONE of that is available in current ranked format. It's pretty much 20-25 champions played more than 3 times through the entire season, and certainly no more than that at worlds most years. It's the same cookie cutter builds, to deal with the same cookie cutter enemy comps, to deal with the same cookie cutter gameplay. It's not fun to watch, and it shows almost 0 skill expression. The only difference between a pro and a challenger streamer in the current pro scene gamestate is usually a personality that's at least capable of team play. That's pretty much it. If they aren't a piece of garbage, they can be a pro. Which sounds fine, but solo queue draft and pro play SHOULD be entirely different, not so insanely similar that you can pretty much transfer game tactics 1 for 1 with a bit of team communication, and find equal if not greater success. The pros should be pros. The best. There should be no question. Instead, currently, the pros are (outside of players who have other value to their team, such as merch sales or popularity) just the lowest price-to-sign players capable of competing at a baseline level. The reason we don't find Faker-level players anymore is because the teams are disincentivized to find one. Costs too much. Better to pump out 7 second-rate players than accidentally find a first rate player and have to pay them appropriately, when the pro scene just isn't that difficult to begin with.

The topic of pro-play balancing and pro jail is a topic I've heard august talk about a lot as well. You mentioned it at the end of the video a little, but do you think there are solutions to the issue? I feel like I know the problem and methods to fix this, but I would need more time to study and think about it.
@totoyuki117 күн бұрын
Pro jail is kinda hard. Fearless does somewhat address it, by having champions with strong team oriented abilities having to be used strategically. This allows characters like Galio, Ryze, Gnar, etc. to see some meaningful buffs on its own, because it now can't be P/B for all 5 games in a series. It doesn't solve for everything though. Some champions will just never be allowed to be too good in the format, so Ryze, and Galio, who I mentioned before, will probably never be allowed to be as good as they could be in Solo Q, because then they could just completely take over pro games when they are picked. Theres not really a solution to that which would actually be functional and useful. People have suggested stuff as extreme as pros having special buffs and nerfs in tournaments, so Galio does innately 10% less damage or something, but that couldn't actually work because it would completely fuck over any solo q practice with that champion, ingraining bad trade habits that work and are fine in one place, but would be unuseable in pro.

On the whole "Disable Champions for a tournament" thing: You shouldn't do this, if a champ gets picked a lot, but if it has a ban rate of over 95%. The obvious historic example is the "Bruiser Worlds Patch", where Gangplank, Elise and Mordekaiser were so fundamentally broken, that they had to be banned in every game. All teams basically agreed to this. And if that happens, the meta becomes really stale, because you have no room to adapt your bans towards the opponents signature picks.

@phreak Stoked for fearless draft. However, I think it is sufficient to just have a ban phase in the first round of the series. Given that 10 champs are auto-banned proceeding to the next round, that’s already a huge chunk. I would even probably suggest to have default banning thru picks, and remove the active banning phase. Basically means that by picking a champ to play, you already have to consider that you also are actively banning it yourself, for the whole series. Having the fearless concept and a banning phase feels redundant.

Honestly love fearless, but also wish Esports decided to merge in some of your other suggestions: Like the anti-flex pick thing: each team has to assign a role to each champion/player, and then cannot change it for an entire split/tournament. And the automated champion removal under certain conditions like maybe a champion hits 80% presence in all game ones? Theyre disabled for either the rest of the patch or the rest of the tournament. I feel like esports could use far more variety; it should either be Blind Pick, and proplay becomes a field of mechanical excellence with every player being absolutely mastered at their champion... or it should be an very stark opposite where pros are expected to have champion oceans showing how diverse and strategic the esport can be.

My only thing about shorter bans is that teams are going just come in with a pre zcripted by there coach told them to do before hand based on team

I think this would be so much better to some champions who often get nerf due to pro plays. Literally they are just ok in ranks. For example, aphelios, kalista, raze, azir. Kinda unfair tho. ( I agree these champions may also get nerf from high elo but definitely not outstanding ones that break up the balance

So I'm just trying to understand, 1. Is there still a game 1 ban phase? 2. If so, there are 10 champions banned and 10 champions picked, does this mean that game 2 has 20 champions banned? game 3, 30 champions banned?

Yep, got it in my last ranked game this evening. We got it and our jungle and me (support) ran straight to the baron (we had killed atakan in bot) to ward. We got picked by three of them and we went 1 for 2 and chunked the two that survived. Our teammates had backed and then went to baron while we were respawning and got a pick on the opponents two who hadn't been involved in killing me and our jungle. Because we respawned so quick, we then had all 5 of our team up for the baron and their last two only respawned as we were finishing of baron. Not how we wanted it to go I'm sure, but it worked out

Look at all of the negative reasons the swap to Fearless was made when the reasoning was always better is because it’s more fun to see more characters which makes for more diverse and exciting games. How can the devs complain about toxicity when it’s so inherent to their behavior they can’t even see it?
