Ever wonder what's the difference between Phthalo Blue GS vs RS (PB15:3 vs PB15:6)?

For me, the biggest difference between pthalo blue, red shade and French ultramarine blue has to do with being able to lift. Thales are staining. I have one palette for modern, staining colors and one that lifts. They are similar in color, but the paints that lift are more granular and more relaxing to use.

Jane Blundell considers Hansa Yellow Medium to be the perfect yellow, it's neither cool nor warm. But I found a better, brighter neutral yellow thar is way more lightfast and which is just as good for mixing as Hansa Yellow Med. It's Daniel Smith's Quinopthalone Yellow. Plus if you add a teeny tiny bit of green or Pthalo Blue (GS), then you can get something close to a cooler yellow like Lemon Yellow. I know this is years later, but maybe this could still be useful to you or someone else.

Hi!! I know this may seem random but i want to ask what is your favorite or what artist grade watercolor brand do you think is the best? Is mijello up there? I want to try the pure pigment set ^^ thank you!
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+iLove kaisoo A favourite brand is just a personal preference. I go for brands that I can find easily so that I can replace my paints easily without spending too much on shipping. Currently, I like Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton and Kremer Pigments. Mijello also has high quality paints, the only downside is the names of their paints can be very different from traditional names, e.g. Peacock Blue. Anyway, each brand will have certain colours that use single pigments, and multiple pigments. For starters, I recommend you check out the pigments that are used to make each colour and get those that use single pigments. Check out this article: www.parkablogs.com/content/colours-pick-12-pan-watercolour-palette

So I’m trying to build my 30-color porcelain palette and I’m torn between which blues to have in my palette. So far I have: Cerulean (for skies/light value blue), French Ultramarine for warm blue, Pthalo Green (BS) for cool mixing blue, and Indanthrene Blue as a deep blue. Lately I’m finding that I’m not the biggest fan of the French Ultramarine though. I’m not sure why. It doesn’t seem very pigmented and I’m not crazy about the granulation. I guess I’m not sure what the hype is over ultramarine? Maybe I am missing something? I much prefer Pthalo Blue Red Shade. But ultramarine seems to be a staple color in 99.999% of artist palettes so I am feeling a little conflicted and confused as to why I am not liking it as much? Is there a reason it is so highly prized and valued as a color? I know it can make amazing greys with burnt sienna and good purples; but couldn’t the red shade of Pthalo blue also do that? The other day I was playing around mixing greys with French ultramarine and burnt sienna and the Pthalo blue red shade and burnt sienna and the results were a little similar. Both were tricky to reach a perfectly neutralized grey though. I was very very surprised at the difficult of achieving a good neutral. I kept getting greys that were leaning either too warm to the burnt sienna side or too cool leaning toward the blue. Any advice for me anyone? Remember I am building a 30 color palette. If you were me which blues would you choose for maximum mixing and versatility? I want to be smart with my choices. Thanks!
@teohyc
@teohyc 4 жыл бұрын
Many probably like Ultramarine because of the granulation. Phthalo Blue (RS) is one alternative which is non granulating. Other blues you can try... Maybe Cobalt Blue PB28. Cobalt Blue Deep (PB74) which is the more extreme version version of Ultramarine. Kremer Pigment's version is extremely granulating. Maybe Prussian Blue but that's not lightfast from certain brands. Cerulean Blue and Cerulean Blue Chromium look slightly different so you may want to test them too.
@YourMajesty143
@YourMajesty143 3 жыл бұрын
Most artists don't like Ultramarine as a stand-alone. Its value is mainly due to it being a good mixing color and bc of its granulation. Personally, my art style is illustrative, so I try to stay away from extremely sedimentary pigments (if possible). I prefer flat illustrations that are created from even washes of color with very little gradation, flocculation, or granulation. So if buying a warm blue, I'd choose Pthalo Blue Red Shade for making purples & violets. However, bc Pthalos are such a staining color, they're harder to lift when making mistakes. But it's great for glazing on top, without worrying if you'll mess up the all the work you painted underneath. Ultramarine glazes decently, but it's mostly prized bc it's not as staining & so it's easier to correct any mishaps. However, Pthalo has a stronger tinting strength, which can be a good thing bc you don't need alot of paint for mixing, however it can suck if you're doing wet-on-wet & it starts to charge into other colors. Charging is fun for loose watercolor bc it creates awesome halos and blotting effects. It's not the best when you're trying to get your paints to play nicely with each other. Bc Pthalos are so competitive when mixed, you'll need to understand their properties well enough to know how much paint to use and in what ratios to mix it, also understanding its characteristics on wet, damp, and dry paper. Ultramarine has less of a learning curve, and so people feel more control with this pigment instead. The same can be said of Cobalt Blue.

Comparing your purples when they don't have the same hue is pretty disappointing. You say one is brighter. One is expected to be brighter according to prevailing theories (split-primary, color-bias), but is it really brighter? Or is it just more 'red' than the purple you made with green shade? I'd like to see you really match the hues before you decide one or the other is brighter. I would also like to see a column for magenta. Permanent alizarin crimson is a mixture of red and magenta, but your purples would likely be cleaner without the red component.

Hi! A question for you. Why don't we have black, cyan, magenta and yellow paint in watercolor like in a colour ink printer cartridges? We know it is possible most--if not all--colours by mixing these four colours. Do you think is it possible to paint with directly from printer cartridge colours?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+Socrates Alexander You can get paints that are close to printer inks. But it will be limited palette. For example yellow and magenta will not give you an orange that is brighter than yellow and a warm red like Cadmium Red, Perm Red or Transparent Pyrrole Orange.
@SocratesAlexander
@SocratesAlexander 8 жыл бұрын
Teoh Yi Chie But if those main colors are made from one type of pigment only, then theoreticaly, you can mix those bright colours. I don't know if we have one single pigmentation for magenta and cyan.
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
Socrates Alexander Yes, in theory, you will need bright colours to start. However, even so, the CMYK model will not be able to mix all colours. Hence there are also Pantone colours.

I always use CMY when I try out new brands, so I only have to buy three tubes/pans but get a large spectrum of colors. I don't know why artists keep insisting on using RGB, it really doesn't work for paint mixing.
